About: the Smittens Are a Hard-Working, Globe-Trotting Independent American Twee Pop Band from Burlington, Vermont The Smittens www.smittens.com [email protected] www.facebook.com/thesmittens twitter: @thesmittens +1 207.577.7203 (Max) About: The Smittens are a hard-working, globe-trotting independent American twee pop band from Burlington, Vermont. The band is friends first and open-hearted indiepop revolutionaries after that. Max Andrucki, Missy Bly, Colin Clary, Dana Kaplan, Holly Chagnon, and David Zacharis switch up instruments, song-writing, and singing to create catchy, harmony-driven pop anthems and queer love songs—always brilliantly lyrical, and often brazenly political. Preferring to do it themselves, the Smittens handle every step of the process, from recording their own music to creating the distinctive artwork that graces the bands fliers and album covers, and booking tours at home and abroad. Formed on a whim at a party in 2002 the Smittens have emerged as one of America's best-loved underground indiepop sextets, releasing 4 full-length albums, 2 eps, and a cache of singles and compilation appearances. This summer they will release a fifth, still-untitled, studio album on London's Fika Recordings. As a fixture on the international indiepop festival circuit, with appearances at the Indietracks festival, Athens Popfest, NYC Popfest, Popfest New England, San Francisco Popfest, London Popfest, Island in the Sun, and the Cosy Den Festival in Stockholm, the Smittens have been bringing their lively, melodic sound to new fans every chance they get. They have received lots of airplay on BBC Radio One and 6 Music. To date the Smittens have toured multiple times across the US, the UK, and Sweden, and in Canada, France, Germany, Denmark, and Finland and have shared the stage with many bands they admire including Allo Darlin’, Go Sailor, Math & Physics Club, Tullycraft, The Mountain Goats, The Undertones, Ballboy, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Mates of State, We Are Scientists, Mirah, The Butchies, Kimya Dawson, Dub Narcotic Sound System, Tender Trap, Bishop Allen, The Essex Green, Comet Gain, Bunnygrunt, The Manhattan Love Suicides, Cats On Fire, Dear Nora, James Kochalka Superstar, and even the late Richie Havens! The Smittens love shows of all kinds—in bars, clubs, at festivals, art spaces, colleges, squats, youth centers, drag balls, parties, weddings and barns, and we always dress to impress. Drop us a line ([email protected]) if you're interested in having us play. Also, you can follow us on Facebook and Twitter! From the Press: - The Smittens have the power to embody to a tee the style known as twee - Losing Today - The closest America has yet come to the transcendent pop/squall mix of Scotland’s terrific twee bands like The Pastels. - New Haven (CT) Advocate - [Gentlefication Now! is] one of the best home recorded indie pop records of all time. - Bee's Knees #20 - Imagine a band that shut themselves up in the garage with albums by the Archies and Talking Heads and you sort of get the idea of what these folks sound like. - Knoxville (TN) News-Sentinel -If the Disney Channel were run by K Records, the Smittens would be the hugest! Their multi-tracked harmonies, sugar-rush guitar melodies, and DIY synth burbles and cute outfits are relentlessly, huggably adorable. - Boston Phoenix - Imagine you're in a room with five people all singing their hearts out, and their voices sound so good together, and their songs are filled with love and hope, [and] their songs sound good, and make you feel good, and in that room you feel like the world is good, and people are good, and things are changing for the better. That's what the little revolution of The Smittens' new album is like. - Erasing Clouds -The Smittens are surely up there with the twee-est bands around – Neon Filler Praise for 'The Coolest Thing About Love': "one of the best indie pop albums in years" PopMatters "THE twee pop album of 2008" - Kingem "another indiepop jewel" - The Athens Exchange "a must for any lover of twee" - The Flatlander "honest, simple, cute, and perfect" - Efeito Musical Praise for 'Believe Me': “There's heaps of character and plenty to enjoy on this neat little bundle of joy… 'Believe Me' is a delightful album, perfectly timed for the sunshine and full of that summertime innocence.” – Bearded Magazine The #5 Indiepop album of 2012. “The Smittens keep getting better…these songs are thoroughly connected to the world and how we negotiate our lives and loves within it. Lusty dance-pop sits near sweet love letters and humorous looks at aging. With a punk spirit of go-for-it-all, they sing about staying positive and yourself within our times.” – Erasing Clouds Praise for ‘Love Record Breaker’ “To pull off diversity in sound is a feat in itself, but to do so with a coherent sound is pure magic.” – The Big Takeover Discography: Full-length Releases: -Gentlefication Now! Many hands lent themselves, strumming autoharps and bowing strings, accompanying the lilting, soaring voice that can not be mistaken. Mirah’s whole new batch of songs stands solid and un-afraid; pianos and drums, truth and protest. If her first album, you think it’s like this but really it’s like this (KLP112) snuck up and surprised you, then her second album Advisory Committee (KLP135) stunned you with cannon fire. Now sit back and relax as C’mon Miracle washes over you and etches its subtle ways into your psyche. Mirah recorded most of C’mon Miracle at Dub Narcotic studio with Phil Elverum and Calvin Johnson. Lori Goldston (of The Black Cat Orchestra), Emily Kingan (of The Haggard and Sextional), Khaela Maricich (The Blow), Aaron Hartman (OTR), Jason Anderson (Wolf Colonel) and Nora Davidson and Themba Lewis (of Liarbird) are among the other players and helpmates who knew just how to coax the right sounds out of Olympia’s late summer and make this album such a whirl of audio pleasure.

These 11 songs are only a sampling of all new songs performed by Elverum in a two-week tour of Japan in early 2003. After spending five months in isolation in Norway, Elverum emerged with a cache of heart-felt and reflective songs reminiscent of The Glow Part II. A drastic change from 2002’s epic tale of Mount Eerie, we find Elverum playing acoustic pop songs with the bare minimum backing of instrumentation. Kyle Field (Little Wings) and Calvin Johnson (Dub Narcotic Sound System) join Elverum on “Universe Conclusion” and “I Love You So Much.” “Climb Over” features The Mools as the backing band. Critical acclaim: “Not since Guided by Voices’ Alien Lanes have so many unique pieces of melody and music merged to form something this unexpectedly chilling and yet ultimately comforting.” Amplifier Magazine ALSO AVAILABLE by THE MICROPHONES: Don’t Wake Me Up CD/LP (K Records) KLP099 It Was Hot, We Stayed In The Water CD (K Records) KLP116 The Glow Pt.

JASON ANDERSON NEW ENGLAND CAT#: KLP148 FORMAT: CD RELEASE DATE: 3.16.04 LABEL: K RECORDS UPC: 789856114825 Box 7154 Olympia, WA 98507 (360) 786-1594 fax (360) 786-5024 www.krecs.com For Kyle • Pen Pals • You Fall • A Book Laid on Its Binding • The Moment • I Swear I Am • Hold On • Thanksgiving • I Want My Summer Back • So Long • Christmas Jason Anderson returns with a studio collaboration with Phil Elvrum of the Microphones/Mount Eerie. New England glows with honest songs and the joy of working with friends. K compatriots Calvin Johnson, Khaela Maricich of the Blow, Adam Forkner of Yume Bitsu/[[VVRRSNN]], Mirah and Elvrum all contribute to the music and the loose, inspired arrangements. After completely finishing an album in 2002 Anderson decided to return to the studio in the summer of 2003 and re-record the best songs from his last year of performing. The result is Jason at his finest: songs with an evolved writing style and obvious maturity. The off-the-cuff, "first take" sessions were so transcendent that Phil even donated a new Mount Eerie song, "Thanksgiving", to the project, as it was recorded with the same pick-up band and was in line with the album's vision and emotional timbre. "You Fall” is an inspired duet between Anderson and Elvrum, their voices intertwining through the melancholy anthem's sublime production. The song flows seamlessly into "A Book Laid On Its Binding"--a song written by Jason's good friend and tour mate Joe Knapp, of Omaha's Son, Ambulance. It consists of nothing more than piano, Jason, and the golden, heartbreaking voice of Mirah.

Traditionally, the purposefulness and relevance of a singer-songwriter were defined by something unique in their lyrical acumen, vocal skills and/or guitar or piano accompaniment. In the 1990s this paradigm was tested by the trend towards larger orchestrastion and towards electronic orchestration. In the 2000s it became harder and harder to give purpose and meaning to a body of work mostly relying on the message. Many singer-songwriters of the 2000s belonged to "Generation X" but sang and wrote for members of "Generation Y". Since "Generation Y" was inherently different from all the generations that had preceeded it, it was no surprise that the audience for these singer-songwriters declined. Since the members of "Generation X" were generally desperate to talk about themselves, it was not surprising that the number of such singer- songwriters increased. The net result was an odd disconnect between the musician and her or his target audience. The singer-songwriters of the 2000s generally sounded more "adult" because... they were.

  • The Appropriation and Packaging of Riot Grrrl Politics by Mainstream Female Musicians
Popular Music and Society, Vol. 26, No. 1, 2003 “A Little Too Ironic”: The Appropriation and Packaging of Riot Grrrl Politics by Mainstream Female Musicians Kristen Schilt “RIOT GIRL IS: BECAUSE I believe with my wholeheartmindbody that girls constitute a revolutionary soul force that can, and will, change the world for real” (“Riot Grrrl Is” 44) “Girl power!” (Spice Girls) Introduction Female rock musicians have had difficulty making it in the predominantly white male rock world. Joanne Gottlieb and Gayle Wald note that women’s participation in rock music usually consists of bolstering male performance, in the roles of groupie, girlfriend, or back-up singer (257). Even in punk rock, women are often treated as a novelty by the music press and cultural critics. Male bands such as the Sex Pistols and the Damned achieve rock notoriety while their female counterparts, like the Slits and the Raincoats, sink into obscurity. However, 1995 saw an explosion in the music press about a new group of female musicians: the angry women. Hailed in popular magazines for blending feminism and rock music, Alanis Morissette topped the charts in 1995. Affectionately named the “screech queen” by Newsweek, Morissette combined angry, sexually graphic lyrics with catchy pop music (Chang 79). She was quickly followed by Tracy Bonham, Meredith Brooks, and Fiona Apple. Though they differed in musical style, this group of musicians embodied what it meant to be a woman expressing anger through rock music, according to the music press. Popular music magazines argued that musicians like Morissette were creating a whole new genre for female performers, one that allowed them to assert their ideas about feminism and sexual- ity.
