2013 Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office in the News December 31, 2013: Lafayette Journal and Courier Illinois man faces a dozen charges in credit card theft Written by Justin L. Mack A dozen felony charges were filed Tuesday against an Illinois man accused of using the personal information of two Lafayette women to obtain credit cards. Kemo D. Whirl, 39, of Wheaton, Ill., was charged in Tippecanoe Superior Court with three counts of forgery, three counts of theft, three counts of fraud, two counts of identify deception and one count of attempted theft. According to court documents, the investigation against Whirl began in June when a woman who worked for Riggs Community Health Center told police that several attempts had been made to open credit cards in her name. She also reported that in July, a U.S. Bank credit card had been issued in her name and sent to an address in Lafayette. The card was later used to make purchases at Home Depot and Target. Surveillance footage from both stores showed the card being used by a black male wearing a baseball cap. Further investigation revealed that the credit card was sent to the home of another Riggs official who held an administrative position and had access to the personal information of other employees. When questioned, the administrator denied all knowledge about the illegally obtained credit card. When shown surveillance footage, the administrator was reportedly able to identify Whirl as the man who used the credit card at Home Depot and Target. She added that he was a friend who stayed with her from time to time.

A former member of SpaceGhostPurrp's Raider Klan , Denzel Curry is one of the precursors of the new generation of electro coming out of Florida. Now joined by such wild men as Smokepurrp, Ski Mask Da Slump God or the late XXXTentacion, Denzel has created a complex mix, which has been much-covered by his peers. To sum it up, his music is a mixture of very technical rap in the tradition of Memphis and the Three 6 Mafia and a rather more elevated psychedelic tendency taken from Outkast and the Dungeon Family. A pure product of the SoundCloud generation, he made waves with Nostalgic 64 (2013) and then Imperial (2016). At the age of just 23, Denzel Curry shows a disarming maturity and an unflagging versatility on TA13oo , his most ambitious album to date. TA13OO. The South Florida rapper carves out his own lane within the genre known as SoundCloud rap, displaying considerable versatility as he channels the pain and confusion of youth. Featured Tracks: In the chaotic arena that is SoundCloud rap, Denzel Curry has etched out his own distinct realm. Presumably he doesn’t mind being tagged as a SoundCloud rapper, as murky and hard to define as that term is. It was just in May that Curry went to the mattresses to uphold his version of the genre’s history, using Twitter and interviews to torpedo Smokepurpp’s claim to have fathered the movement.

AN ANALYSIS OF THE MUSICAL INTERPRETATIONS OF NINA SIMONE by JESSIE L. FREYERMUTH B.M., Kansas State University, 2008 A THESIS submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF MUSIC Department of Music College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2010 Approved by: Major Professor Dale Ganz Copyright JESSIE L. FREYERMUTH 2010 Abstract Nina Simone was a prominent jazz musician of the late 1950s and 60s. Beyond her fame as a jazz musician, Nina Simone reached even greater status as a civil rights activist. Her music spoke to the hearts of hundreds of thousands in the black community who were struggling to rise above their status as a second-class citizen. Simone’s powerful anthems were a reminder that change was going to come. Nina Simone’s musical interpretation and approach was very unique because of her background as a classical pianist. Nina’s untrained vocal chops were a perfect blend of rough growl and smooth straight-tone, which provided an unquestionable feeling of heartache to the songs in her repertoire. Simone also had a knack for word painting, and the emotional climax in her songs is absolutely stunning. Nina Simone did not have a typical jazz style. Critics often described her as a “jazz-and-something-else-singer.” She moved effortlessly through genres, including gospel, blues, jazz, folk, classical, and even European classical. Probably her biggest mark, however, was on the genre of protest songs. Simone was one of the most outspoken and influential musicians throughout the civil rights movement. Her music spoke to the hundreds of thousands of African American men and women fighting for their rights during the 1960s.
