FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Tryon, NC – July 10th, 2010 – Lichty Guitars, builder of high-end handcrafted acoustic guitars and ukuleles, announced today the delivery of a Custom Acoustic Guitar to Tom Gossin. Lichty builds one-of-a-kind custom instruments in his Tryon NC luthier’s shop. His instruments are rapidly gaining a reputation with professional musicians as instruments of stunning tonal quality and expert craftsmanship. Lichty believes that nothing inspires great music more than playing an instrument you love. Gossin agrees, as his new Lichty Guitar has him writing up a storm. Musicians who currently play and are inspired by Lichtys include: Tom Gossin, Jody Porter (solo artist and member of Fountains of Wayne), Doug Lancio (Nashville Producer and lead guitarist for John Hiatt and Patty Griffin), Jonathan Gray, and more.     A Conversation with Matthew Ryan by Frank Goodman (1/2007, Puremusic.com) Dark, stark, brooding, explosive. It's all that, with an abiding brilliance that delivers both the singer and the listener at least an avenue out and an entrance in to hematomic world of Matthew Ryan. Seven highly regarded records into the game, Ryan is on the map, but still searching for home. He's done major labels, smaller labels, self releases, and international licensing deals, and thoroughly gained the respect of the global press. Through the catalog, his writing is unabashedly poetic, ever fierce, and always a very recognizable voice. Sometimes called alternative country, his material frequently owes more to 80's Brit pop sonically, and his current missive, From A Late Night High Rise was largely birthed on one keyboard, before he handed over the storm of thick noisy tracks to Neilson Hubbard to sort and flesh out. This record took place after a collaboration with Hubbard and others called Strays Don't Sleep, and was written, more crucially, after his brother was sentenced to thirty years. On the phone, I found Matthew very warm, a fellow Philly guy who was surprisingly forthcoming. No walk in the park, to be sure, but a good man. Someone to get behind; nobody to cross, certainly no one to take lightly. After I digested the formidable From A Late Night High Rise, I revisited the midnight folk of Concussion and the masterful Hybrid release Regret Over The Wires, from a couple of years back. These are all passionate, important releases, and Strays Don't Sleep is a remarkable sounding collaboration between Ryan and Neilson Hubbard that includes Brian Bequette (Garrison Starr) on guitars, Billy Mercer (Ryan Adams) on bass and Steve Latanation (Agent Orange) on drums.

It began in 2014 with the release of Boxers, a fevered and smart rock ‘n’ roll record about the working class, produced by Kevin Salem. May 2017 will see the follow-through with Hustle Up Starlings, a heart-on-the-sleeve collection of silvery anthems that further illustrate Ryan’s reinvigorated love of language, noise and cinema. Produced by Brian Fallon from The Gaslight Anthem, Starlings shimmers with an immediate and captivating focus. The 10-song set clocks in at 40 minutes with no prevarication or bluster, just a celebratory noise alight with hearts and history, broken-in voices and poetry. Matthew Ryan grew up in Chester, Pennsylvania just south of Philly, and spent his teens in Newark, Delaware. In his early 20s, he moved to Nashville, where he was first signed to A&M Records, releasing May Day (1997) and East Autumn Grin (2000) before falling prey to the titanic label mergers of the early aughts. What followed was more or less an album a year by any and all means possible until 2012’s In The Dusk of Everything. After moving to Western Pennsylvania in 2011, Ryan quietly decided that he’d had enough. Dusk would be his last album. “Music had become too lonely,” he said. But soon after that declaration, a sudden friendship with the frontman from The Gaslight Anthem, Brian Fallon, reignited something in Ryan.

    A Conversation with Patty Griffin by Frank Goodman (2/2007, Puremusic.com) When discerning people of hip culture today consider who their favorite singers are, there is a great likelihood that Patty Griffin appears in their Top Ten. She has quietly, firmly assumed that spot without any apparent push from labels or high powered PR, although a more subtle grassroots effort has always been afoot, no doubt. But she got there largely the old fashioned way, she sang her way there. By herself, as a duo or with rock bands in certain periods, making obvious the truth that she can do all that, and much more. And though her voice is not short of magnificent, her songwriting propelled her to success in short order. People want to cut a Patty Griffin song the same way they might want Buddy Miller to play or Emmy Lou to sing on their record. They want them there, as part of who they are, and to make their record that much more special. We're very glad to have had the opportunity to speak with the artist recently, to mark the occasion of her new benchmark release, Children Running Through. She's complicated, interesting, and shared some of herself that day. A play based on her music will soon appear, written by Keith Brunin and produced by Tom Hulce. We discussed that, and many parts of her past and present in the pages to follow. We're sure that after you hear the clips on the Listen page, you'll be enjoying your own copy of Children Running Through, as we have ours.
