On his 20th solo album, Hiatt remains at the top of his game. There are no surprises left in his musical toolbox at this point, but that’s OK because it’s a big toolbox. Hiatt dresses up these 11 excellent songs with pedal steel, organ, piano, mandolin, accordion, a string orchestra and Doug Lancio’s twangy guitar. While each arrangement is different, Hiatt’s raspy two-pack-a-day tenor transforms every tune into a country blues. The lyrics are concise but the topics ambitious when Hiatt sings about darkness as refuge, consolation in tribulation and apocalyptic visions. There’s a car song, a train song and — here’s a refreshing angle — a song about the joy of marriage. A timely remembrance of 9-11 concludes the set. “When New York Had Her Heart Broke” opens with the drums setting a march tempo, and other instruments gradually join in, their diffuse contributions creating a ghostlike effect. But Hiatt’s final words are firmly on the beat: “She will rise again.” CHECK THIS OUT: Guitars moan and an ill wind blows on the opening “Damn This Town,” a la- ment from Dysfunction Junction. By the time Hiatt reaches the bridge he’s seeking spiritual relief, and the song has become a mudslide hymn.” - Associated Press review, August 1, 2011 “The Indiana-born singer-songwriter has been releasing albums since the mid-‘70s, and has be- come even more prolific in the last decade. Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns is his seventh studio release since 2000, and 20th overall. Once again recording with his road band, Hiatt isn’t much for frills or fussiness. But he knows how to write and frame a durable song – little wonder he’s been covered by everyone from Bob Dylan to Iggy Pop. His tunes frequently fall into a midtempo pocket that draws on numerous American traditions: the wit and rhythms of blues and soul, mostly, but also the twang of country, a hint of Tex-Mex, a shot of rock ‘n’ roll, tied together by sharply observed images. With a wolfish drawl, he puts a few sly twists into straight-up pop (“Love That Girl”), milks a little more mileage out of a chugging I-love-my-car homage (“Detroit Made”) and hops aboard for another clickety-clack railroad ride (“Train to Bir- mingham”). These are the kinds of craftsmanlike genre exercises Hiatt could toss off for decades -- if not quite matching the songwriting standard he set in classic albums such as Riding With the King (1983) or Bring the Family (1987). But every album contains a few moments of mastery, and Dirty Jeans is no exception. In “Damn This Town” he some- how pulls self-deprecating humor out of despair, and colors the post-Apocalyptic nightmare of “Hold on For Your Love” with steadily rising desperation, punctuated by Doug Lancio’s guitar solo. The deceptively dream-like “Adios to California” strings together telling couplets about a break-up that should be the envy of every novelist. And with “Don’t Wanna Leave You Now,” he persuasively transforms himself into a love-struck soul balladeer.” - Chicago Tribune review, 8/2/11 Upcoming... 8/15: Ben Harper “Don’t Give Up On Me Now”... 8/22: Mike Doughty “Na Na Nothing,” Jackson Browne “You Know The Night” (Note Of Hope: A Celebration of Woody Guthrie) ... 8/29 The Duke & The King “Shaky,” Blind Pilot “We Are The Tide” Listen to everything and find out more at www.rightarmresource.com as well as facebook.com/rightarmresource or twitter.com/rightarmjesse RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY UPDATE - 8/3/11.
