Upcoming 15Th Annual Yerushalayim Yarchei Kallah Upcoming 15th Annual Yerushalayim Yarchei Kallah January 6, 2015 ‘Experience a week of learning with some of the greatest Magidei Shiur in Klal Yisroel…’ — A partial view of the crowd at the 14th Annual Yerushalayim Yarchei Kallah For four unforgettable days, some 250 bnei torah will escape the shackles of cell phones, e-mails, and day-to-day work and enter the avirah of Toras Eretz Yisroel at this year’s Agudas Yisroel of America’s Yerushlayim Yarchei Kallah, to be held at the Ramada Hotel commencing Monday, 28 Teves (January 19). The Yarchei Kallah will effectively transform the main ballroom at the hotel into a full-fledged Yeshiva Gedolah. Monday through Thursday from early morning until late at night participants will delve into the sugyos of ברכת המזון, ברכה אחרונה (פרק שלשה שאכלו) “It’s striking, sometimes,” comments a past participant, “when in the middle of explaining something to your chavrusa, you look up and see, to your surprise, that the people around you engaged in loud andlebedik learning aren’t current yeshiva bachurim but men who for the most part are well beyond their yeshiva years.” “When you close your eyes,” adds his chavrusa, “you really feel as though you are sitting in the beis medrash of a world-renowned yeshiva…” Indeed Gedolei Yisroel have highly recommended dedicated baaleibatim to make every effort and join this week-long expression of where their hearts truly lie – in thedaled amos of halacha. HaRav Aron Leib Steinman speaking, Novominsker Rebbe on right at the 14th Annual Yerushalayim Yarchei Kallah According to Rabbi Shlomo Gertzulin, the registration for this year’s Yarchei Kallah has reached record levels with participants joining from communities across the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Eretz Yisroel. Many newcomers to the program are especially excited with the revival of an English track throughout this year’s program. This year, besides the shiurim on the sugya, divrei chizuk will be delivered by following Torah personalities (in alphabetical order): HaRav Doniel Alter, Rosh Kollel, Kollel Ari Shebi’chabura, Yerushalayim, HaRav Avrohom Chaim Feuer, Rosh Yeshiva Mesoras Mordechai, Ramat Beit Shemesh, Rav, B’Khal Chasidim, Sha’arei Chesed, Yerushalayim, HaRav Eliezer Yehudah Finkel, Rosh HaYeshiva, Yeshivas Mir, Viznitzer Rebbe, HaRav Yaakov Hillel, Rosh Yeshiva, Mechon Ahavat Shalom, Yerushalayim, HaRav Reuvain Leuchter, Mashgiach, HaRav Yitzchok Scheiner, Rosh HaYeshiva, Kaminetzer Yeshiva, Yerushalayim , HaRav Aaron Leib Shteinman, Rosh HaYeshiva, Orchos HaTorah, Bnei Brak. Rabbi Avrohom Nisan Perl, Director of Torah Projects at Agudas Yisroel of America, notes that “Shiurim at past Agudas Yisroel Yarchei Kallah have been lively and animated with participants eagerly getting involved into the very depths of the sugya; b”H this year once again, word has spread quickly about the uniqueness of this specialma’amad . Helped by relatively reasonable airfares this year, we are expecting a record turnout.” To register call 212.797.7380 or email [email protected]. For more information on this year’s Yerushalayim Yarchei Kallah program, contact Agudas Yisroel of America’s Torah Projects Division at 212 797 9000 x 267 or e-mail [email protected]. At a previous year’s Yerushalayim Yarchei Kallah, Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel ZT”L noted how the world is experiencing extraordinary trials and difficulties and praised the baaleibatim for meriting to be marbeh shalom in the world through their limud HaTorah. That observation, says Rabbi Perl, is “even more appropriate today”..

  • Points to Ponder Chukas 5776 Zos Chukas Hatorah
Points to Ponder Chukas 5776 Zos Chukas Hatorah (19:2) – The Ramban asks why the Parsha begins with Zos Chukas HaTorah and then Daber El Bnei Yisrael. Shouldn’t it be Daber El Bnei Yisrael first and then Zos Chukas HaTorah? Rav Schachter Shlita explained in the name of Rav Yerucham Gorelick ztl. that the first rule is that the Parah Aduma is something that requires the Beis Din of 71 – that it should be first a Chukah that it must be LEinei HaEida and then Daber El Bnei Yisrael that this is part of the chukas HaTorah. This is the Torah when a man dies in the tent (19:14) – The Rambam (Talmud Torah 3:12) writes that the words of Torah stand the test of time when one is prepared to kill himself for them in the tents of the Tzaddikim. What does being among the Tzaddikim have to do with it? Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel ztl. explained that the source for the Rambam is the understanding that Chazal had that one should not absolve himself from the Beis HaMedrash – which is distinct from not absolving himself from Torah. Torah is often studied in many places but the situation that guarantees its success is in the Battei Medrashos. Since you didn’t trust me to sanctify me (20:12) – The commentaries abound as to what exactly the sin of Moshe and Aharon was. Rav Yosef Albo says the sin was in the fact that they had a chance to make a Kiddush Hashem and they did not. He should have declared the waters to spring forth and he did not – losing out on a chance to prove that Tzaddik Gozer V’HaKadosh Baruch Hu Mikayem.

(Breishis 12:1) Why was Avram not told immediately where he was going? HASHEM wanted to intensify the test of his leaving ... to place a test within a test. Is there a person that goes and doesn't know where he is going? (Midrash Tanchuma) A few years back I went to Israel during the week of Parshas Lech Lecha with one of my boys in spite of the fact that violence against Jews in Israel was just starting to gain a terrifying momentum. We heard that Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel the Rosh HaYeshiva of Mir in Jerusalem gave a class on the weekly portion at his house Erev Shabbos, in English. We made sure to get there early to get a good seat. The room filled and then the Rebbe entered. Weak but courageous and barely audible even at close range he began to read and translate, "And HASHEM said to Avram, ‘Go for yourself from your land from your birthplace from your fathers' house to the land that I will show you."' When he translated those last words, "to the land that I will show you" he took a deep and eerie swallow and with almost an other worldly look he said, "It's not easy not knowing where you are going!" I thought to myself, "Is he speaking to the assembled students and all their unanswered questions of life like marriage and livelihood, or was he talking about the situation of the Jewish People in Israel, or was he reflecting aloud as an elder burdened with disabilities, on the ultimate journey of life? After a brief discussion with my son afterwards we concluded "all of the above".

  • Dear Youth Directors, Youth Chairs, and Youth Leaders, NCYI Is Excited to Continue Our Very Successful Parsha Nation Guides
Dear Youth Directors, Youth chairs, and Youth Leaders, NCYI is excited to continue our very successful Parsha Nation Guides. I hope you’re enjoying and learning from Parsha Nation as much as we are. Putting together Parsha Nation every week is indeed no easy task. It takes a lot of time and effort to ensure that each section, as well as each age group, receives the attention and dedication it deserves. We inspire and mold future leaders. The youth leaders of Young Israel have the distinct honor and privilege to teach and develop the youth of Young Israel. Children today are constantly looking for role models and inspirations to latch on to and learn from. Whether it is actual sit down learning sessions, exciting Parsha trivia games, or even just walking down the hall to the Kiddush room, our youth look to us and watch our every move. It’s not always about the things we say, it’s about the things we do. Our children hear and see everything we do whether we realize it or not. This year we are taking our Youth Services to new heights as we introduce our Leadership Training Shabbaton. This engaging, interactive shabbaton will give youth leader’s hands on experience and practical solutions to effectively guide your youth department. Informal education is key. What the summer shows us as educators is that informal education can deliver better results and help increase our youth’s connection to Hashem. More and more shuls are revamping their youth program to give their children a better connection to shul and to Hashem.

Amongst many stories that he told about Rav Nosson Tzvi, he related the following: Approximately 15 years before Rav Nosson Tzvi’s passing, there was a family from New York who lost their father, a distinguished Talmid Chochom, and talmid of the Mir. Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel had a particularly fond relationship with the deceased and took it upon himself to ensure that his orphans have a fatherly figure in their lives. He told the children to correspond with him through letters, and that they can ask him any question that they have on their minds. Rav Nosson Tzvi kept photos of these orphans in his pocket as a constant reminder of his “other” family. The children took advantage of their surrogate father and would correspond with him about everything. Despite the challenges of Parkinson’s disease which ravaged his body, Rav Nosson Tzvi would write back letters in response. This went on for many years until the boys grew up and went to Eretz Yisroel to learn in Yeshivos.
