SEAN ARMSTRONG Managing Principal Redwood Energy INSULATION INTERSECTIONALITY: STRATEGIES FOR ADDRESSING HIGH GWP & TOXIC CHEMICALS IN INSULATION Effective insulation is imperative in achieving zero energy buildings. Insulation materials vary in their R-value, and also in contributions to global warming chemicals in the environment, and toxicity that impacts human health. Some insulation and air-sealing materials contain persistent, bioaccumulative, or toxic chemicals that are linked to cancer, asthma, reproductive or developmental toxicity, or endocrine disruption. These can pose high hazards to workers who manufacture and install these products. They may also endanger a building’s residents, communities adjacent to manufacturing facilities, and to the broader environment. This presentation will share information that can be used to evaluate, select, and write specifications for products that incorporate healthier insulation and air-sealing materials. This is a case study about how the building was redesigned and retrofitted to be a net zero energy building. Energy and water savings will be discussed as well.

TAHSEENA KAHN President Energy Managers LLC CLASS A BUILDING ON ITS WAY TO ZNE This building was purchased by a sustainably-minded entrepreneur in 2017. He had sold his business and building in the North Valley and wanted to invest in a building that he could be proud of owning. However, the building had old technology, old lighting, and its HVAC hadn’t been maintained. This is a good example of how a building owner who is paying the utility bill can use PACE financing, new technologies (Energy monitoring, Solar PV, Pelican Thermostats, Evaporcool, new ducting)and be forward thinking (EV Charging Stations) and work to achieve Energy Star Certification.

What will the next generation of design professionals bring to the industry and how will they embrace change? How will they design buildings where high performance is the primary driver at an increasingly complex urban scale? Moving beyond basic design parameters like climate zone and sun path, new concerns and typologies emerge. ANTHONY BROWER LEED Fellow & Director of Sustainable Design Gensler EMBODIED CARBON: IT REALLY IS THAT BIG A DEAL It is important for professionals responsible for the built environment to be pushing for Net Zero buildings and the reduction of the operational carbon of a building; but that is not enough. The impact of embodied carbon overshadows operational carbon and it is often overlooked. During the presentation, participants will learn about the impacts of operational and embodied carbon and the strategies used to measure each. In addition, this presentation will discuss considerations around the life cycle impact of building and material reuse versus operational energy in creating a total carbon story using project case studies as examples. Embodied carbon NURA DARABI NIKA PARSA really is that big of a deal and we should be looking for ways to reduce the embodied carbon impact in our work. LA VS. THE BAY: HOW WORKING TOWARD ZERO WASTE IN THE SAME STATE CAN LOOK VERY DIFFERENT HDCCo is building two projects working towards net positive waste. Net Positive Waste is a Living Building Challenge Imperative that requires salvage and average recycling of 95% of construction waste. Working towards net positive waste has exposed weaknesses in CA waste disposal and recycling. Our experiences in the Bay Area and LA show these weaknesses differ regionally. We have had to tackle the challenge of source separation, and a volatile recycling market has exposed that a lot of the “recyclable” material generated isn’t actually recyclable at all. Our presentation will cover how even the state with the most progressive green policies struggles with recycling, how we are working JESSIE ALI FLYNN BUCKMASTER Sustainability Coordinator through these challenges, and how overcoming these obstacles can look very different in Northern vs. Southern CA.
