  • “When I Listen to Gish,” Billy Corgan Says Today
“When I listen to Gish,” Billy Corgan says today, “what I hear is a beautiful naïveté.” They say you never forget the first time, and even twenty years later, the 1991 debut album by Smashing Pumpkins –– guitarist and vocalist Corgan, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, bassist D’arcy Wretzky and guitarist James Iha –– remains the unforgettable start of a musical conversation that continues to resonate with millions of fans all around the world. In retrospect, Gish can clearly be heard as a groundbreaking album in the history of what would soon become more much widely known as alternative rock. Gish was, after all, the promising debut of a band that would help alternative rock quickly become part of a new, grungier mainstream. But back in the beginning, Gish was simply the memorable opening salvo by a band from Chicago that really didn’t fit in anywhere in the rock world –– that is, until bands like Smashing Pumpkins helped change the rock world once and for all. To hear Corgan tell it now, Smashing Pumpkins came by their beautiful naïveté naturally. “We’d had very little exposure to the national stage,” he explains. “There’s no way that if we had been exposed to all of what was going on in New York and L.A. earlier, we would have made Gish. This is one of those weird albums that sounds like it came from some guy who crawls up out of the basement holding a record in his hands proudly –– a little like the first time we heard Dinosaur Jr. You think, ‘who the hell is this? And where did that come from?’ ” According to Corgan, the album originally came from Smashing Pumpkins’ early vow of poverty.

  • Smashing Pumpkins Pull Off Set with Flawless, Dynamic Precision
REVIEW: Smashing Pumpkins pull off set with flawless, dynamic precision luchameleon.com /2012/10/review-smashing-pumpkins-pull-off-set-with-flawless-dynamic-precision/ luchameleon By Sean Keenehan Section Editor The Smashing Pumpkins took the stage for a homecoming performance on Friday, October 19th at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL. The band performed their entire new album, Oceania, and a wide variety of earlier Pumpkins material in a commanding two-and-a-half-hour set. Photo By Sean Keenehan/The Chameleon. The Smashing Pumpkins held a homecoming concert Oct 19 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL. With a stage production that included a large, inflatable, cylindrical LED screen suspended above the band, the Pumpkins pulled off Oceania with flawless, dynamic precision, both sonically and visually. The round, three-dimensional ball acted as part projector/part new media art installation, surrounded by a flashing light production that gave the screen the impression of a planet floating in outer space. Singer and guitarist Billy Corgan fronted the current Smashing Pumpkins lineup confidently and comfortably. He playfully traded licks with guitarist Jeff Schroeder (including a back-to-back harmony during the guitar solo of “Ava Adore”), executed perfect pitch, harmonized vocal exchanges with bassist Nicole Florentino (as well as humorous, between-song dialogues) and locked into the groves of 22-year old drummer, Mike Byrne (who also came from behind the drum set to play keyboards). Song highlights from Oceania included “Panopticon,” “Pinwheels,” “The Chimera” and the minimalistic, last song from Oceania, “Wildflower,” on which Schroeder, Florentino and Byrne all played keyboards while Corgan’s lone guitar tones wailed and soared throughout the arena.

  • What Hip Reindeer Will Be Playing This Christmas!
What Hip Reindeer Will Be Playing This Christmas! Bittles‘ Magazine | Record Review You have to be very brave to release an album of new material in December! Any money that people have is being spent on presents, protection money to Santa, or on getting as drunk as humanely possible. So let us raise a glass and give a warm round of applause to those who have brought out new records in this most festive, yet culturally void of months. By JOHN BITTLES The Smashing Pumpkins are back with the traditional American rock sound of Monuments to An Elegy, Baaz has shown how to make a great house album with the gorgeously deep Red Souvenirs and Lawrence gives us sunshine-infused ambience with A Day In The Life. Oh, and pop puppets Take That may or may not have a new LP out. But really, for depressive weirdos, and grunge survivors everywhere we can begin with only one band. After the reissue of Adore earlier this year allowed us all to recall just how great a band The Smashing Pumpkins are, this month sees Billy Corgan and co return with some brand new sounds. Monuments to An Elegy may sound like the title of an old Muse cast-off, yet it is actually the second part of the terrifying pretentiously named Teargarden by Kaleidyscope series. Stung by criticism of the first part, 2012’s sprawling Oceania, Monuments sees the Pumpkins return to the short, sharp three minute rock song format so beloved by skinny jean wearing bores everywhere. The album is short at 32 minutes, and during some of the songs you really get the impression that Billy Corgan’s heart just isn’t in it.

  • Cool Kids Never Have the Time: the Music of the Smashing Pumpkins and Youth of the 1990S
STARKIE, ZACHARY J., M.M. Cool Kids Never Have the Time: The Music of the Smashing Pumpkins and Youth of the 1990s. (2008) Directed by Dr. Guy Capuzzo. 105 pp. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the connection between youth of the 1990s and the music of the Smashing Pumpkins. The introduction is used to provide the reader with pertinent background information on youth, the 1990s, alternative music, and the Smashing Pumpkins. Following that, Chapters 1 and 2 feature analyses of two songs by the Smashing Pumpkins, “Here Is No Why” and “Tales of a Scorched Earth.” The analyses of both songs focus on text enhancement and musical contrasts in each song. At the end of Chapter 2, the qualities of each song are compared. Chapter 3 examines two styles of music that were influential on the band, progressive rock and heavy metal, and examines their place in “Here Is Now Why” and “Tales of a Scorched Earth.” Chapter 3 also examines how the differences between these two styles are evident in the Smashing Pumpkins’ music. Finally, Chapter 4 examines the band’s newest recording, Zeitgeist, and assesses its use of the musical aspects evident in “Here Is No Why” and “Tales of a Scorched Earth.” COOL KIDS NEVER HAVE THE TIME: THE MUSIC OF THE SMASHING PUMPKINS AND YOUTH OF THE 1990S by Zachary J. • Speaking in Rhyme and Riddle: Hybridity in Billy Corgan's
SPEAKING IN RHYME AND RIDDLE: HYBRIDITY IN BILLY CORGAN’S MACHINA by ADAM MICHAEL WARE (Under the Direction of Carolyn Jones Medine) ABSTRACT The present study examines MACHINA , a hybrid multimedia narrative composed and performed by Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins. Through a disjunctive use of media to tell the story of a fractured, hybrid hero named GLASS, Corgan reveals himself to be an inheritor of William Blake’s attitudes toward creative media as evidenced in his experiments in illuminated engraving. GLASS, the focus of the chards of narrative and performance, represents one variant of Joseph Campbell’s hero as suited to the needs of Corgan’s disaffected audience. In the act of co-creating the narrative with Corgan, his audience helps to enter themselves into a liminal state and a sense of communitas as developed by anthropologist Victor Turner, again with variations made to suit the fractured, conflicted nature of Billy Corgan’s audience. More than a concept album, MACHINA reworks a number of existing notions about religious responses to narrative and performance.
