MUN (Model United Nations) Debating

Congratulations to all the students who were successful at the Alkmaar International MUN debating competition, where they have received huge praise for their debating skills representing the Republic of Korea and Belgium. The Secretary-General, Moos Middelkoop, deliberately went out of his way to highlight the fact that Form 6 students Gregory Brunt and Joe Kelly delivered the best opening speeches at the international conference. Moos was quoted as saying: “We are always impressed by the grace, fluency and calmness of Oakham’s MUN debating teams and they are clearly a shining symbol of MUN excellence.” William Jacklin and Lara Phillipson were also highly commended for their research and resolution on complex issues. Moreover, Sophie Piggott who was part of the historical committee, was singled out for making fantastic contributions, including asking insightful questions to the resolutions. Oakhamians are now busy preparing to represent the Security Council nation Equatorial Guinea and Chile at Cheadle Hulme School.

Oakham School 3 PERFORMING ARTS

Music

This has been another highly successful term of music performances at Oakham. Students have participated in nine Music at Lunchtime concerts in All Saints’ Church, one local church concert, three Informal Concerts, four major Chapel concerts and the Leavers’ Concert, as well as the Big Band Concert in the Doncaster Close marquee.

In April, the Big Band gave a concert at St Michael and All Angels Church in Whitwell. They gave an excellent performance of contemporary and classic jazz that was much enjoyed by all, and raised over £1145 towards the upkeep of the church. At the beginning of May, the Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, Polyphonix & Wind Band performed in this year’s Friday Night Classics Concert, which featured music of great variety, from J S Bach to John Williams. Form 7 trombonist, Oliver Brunt, gave a notable performance of the challenging Romance for bass trombone by Weber. The Speech Day concert in the Chapel presented a collection of contrasting choral music. The Chapel Choir, Chamber Choir and soloists performed a range of works including Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus as well as a selection of Latvian choral music ahead of the Music Tour to Latvia in July. The Chapel Choir also gave the first performance of a newly commissioned work by Will Todd (For the beauty of the earth) to mark the retirement of Mr Lashbrook as Headmaster. Lower School musicians gave a delightful Lower School Live in Concert in early June, which featured performances from all the Lower School ensembles as well as many soloists. The final Chapel concert of the year, Orchestral Sounds, was our annual celebration of our talented orchestral players. The Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra performed an eclectic programme, which included Rossini’s Overture to William Tell and Canteloube’s Songs of the Auvergne, which featured Form 7 singer Lily McNeill as soprano soloist. As always, the Big Band Concert in the Doncaster Close Marquee was a massive hit with a capacity audience who came along to hear the band play. It was a fitting end to a successful term of music at Oakham School.

The Music Department would like to take this opportunity to thank parents very much for your much-valued support at our concerts this academic year.

This term has also seen a number of music achievements from individual students. We are delighted that Form 6 student William Collison has been awarded a place in the National Youth Choir of Great Britain for next academic year. Huge congratulations to Form 6 student Angelina Zhu who achieved the rare distinction of scoring 100% in her Grade 5 Theory exam in March, and to Form 1 pupil Evie Holder who won a number of awards at the recent Stamford Music Competition, including the All Saints’ Trophy for Excellence in Singing.

Drama

This term, the whole of the Lower School shared their talents in the annual Drama and Dance Showcase in the QET. The three events, Lower 1, Form 1 and Form 2, presented both dance and drama disciplines as each set performed pieces that were the culmination of their term of Performing Arts’ lessons.

In Drama, Lower 1 performed extracts from T.S.Eliot’s Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, whilst Form 1 presented a variety of performance poetry ranging from the hilarious ‘School Life’ by Cheryl Thesira to the topical ‘Television’ by Roald Dahl and Form 2 staged selected tales from Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes.

Oakham School 4 In dance, Lower 1 performed a fun, modern dance (with a few disco moves thrown in!) to Cat Scratch Fever and Form 1 showcased an array of different genres, including; a salsa dance to Zuku Zuku, an acrobatics routine to Tina Turner's Simply The Best, a highly energetic Bhangra dance to Hadippa and a funky hip-hop number to Run DMC's It's Like That. The show ended with a spectacular finale dance to The Greatest Showman, performed by the entire year group.

The Form 2 dance numbers consisted of a street dance to In My Mind, In My Head, a fast and furious modern/jazz routine to Queen's Don't Stop Me Now, a slow contemporary dance to Michael Jackson's Man In The Mirror, and a charming jazz-style partner dance to a cover version of Bleeding Love. The evening finished on an energetic high with a finale dance to Walking On Sunshine.

This year saw another successful one in terms of students being invited to join the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain; the highest accolade. Both Kitty McNeill and Caleb Ighofose were successful and will join the company over the summer. Clo Farmer whose astonishing performance in the scholars’ production of Handbagged wowed QET audiences, has been offered a place on the foundation course at Oxford School of Drama. OO Konstantin Stanchev will begin the three year Classical Acting BA at the Lir in September. We wish them all the very best of luck.

This year’s Lower School production of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass gave exciting and challenging acting opportunities to a wide range of performers; from seasoned veterans to newcomers to the stage. This perennial favourite was a huge hit with audiences - old and young alike. Fantastical costumes and mesmerising visual effects were hugely enjoyed. As our Form 2 actors say ‘goodbye’ to Lower School - we salute them and thank them:

Mesi Johnson Daisy Styles Ethan Taylor Jemima Ashton- Roberts Sophie West-Sadler David Harrison Phoebe Skelton Maxim El-Sheikh Evie Sheridan Isabelle Myhill Olivia Tyler Georgia Kirsopp

A special mention must also go to Olivia Sutton, Adam Johnston and Evie Holder who, along with the rest of the 26 strong cast, showed a degree of industry, skill, creativity, and determination that bodes very well for the future of theatre at Oakham.

The Dance Showcase was our final production of the year and a fantastic way to start the Summer. The show consisted of an array of pieces performed by students from Lower 1 through to Form 4 all of whom attend the weekly classes offered by the department. A number of musical styles and dance genres were featured, including; “Don't Worry, Be Happy", a charming modern routine and ‘Meant to be’ with the opening section choreographed by Form 4 pupil Phoebe Graff-Baker, were all performed by the Lower School class. "If You're Over Me", a funky, locking number and a stunning lyrical/contemporary dance "Chaperone’ were the work of the Middle School students. As well as a chance to pull classwork together into a performance, the showcase is also used as a platform for students to share their own work with an audience. We saw a number of innovative and exciting smaller group pieces containing the dancers' own choreography, such as "Warrior", "Reet Petite" and "Be Alright" - to name but a few. Students chose their own music and groupings and rehearsed in their free time. The performance ended in a grand finale to a medley of songs and saw all dancers come together on the stage for the final bow. A fun-filled evening with some superb dancing and talent shown.

Oakham School 5 SPORT

Lower School Athletics

The IAPS Championships took place on Friday 7 June and were extraordinary. The weather even more extraordinary. The rain did not stop, but not even the weather held Oakham back. The Team returned with 4 Golds, 1 Silver and 4 Bronze.

 The first of the highlights was a dramatic fight in the boys U14 Hurdles. A tough start out the blocks but a good finish gave Charlie Watts a chance in the Hurdles Final. Nothing like borrowing a girl’s pair of spikes to pick up the pace and a very deserving Bronze medal was achieved.  The Middle Distance races were exceptional. Betsy Healey crossed the line for Bronze, missing a place at the Nationals by a hairs breadth. A time like this last year would have earned her a rightful place in Birmingham.  Sofia Barrett then unleashed her magic. Running in a faster time than any U14 800m runner earning a well-deserved Gold.  Charlotte Cousley followed shortly to earn Silver in the U14 Girls 800m but earning a place at the Birmingham Nationals.  Harry Dadd proved just how well he can run the 1500m in the rain. A truly outstanding performance winning in a time of 4min 50s and knocking 15s off his PB.  Flo Lissaman chased down her bronze position with immense effort in the pouring rain. This was a repeat performance from last year, missing out on the Nationals by an arm’s length.  The Sprints were no less remarkable. The Smith Sisters dominated the track. Alice Smith showed speed and stamina to earn Gold in the U13 Girls 200m. Her older sister Evie Smith followed suit with equal power, grit and determination earning Gold in the U14 Girls 300m.  The Field events were a tough challenge. Impressively, Sofia Barrett added a Bronze to her collection jumping 4.28m in the most awful of conditions.

Rutland Championships - Leicester County Championships 2019

Oakham had another truly exceptional day out on the track and in the field at the County Championships. A total of 37 athletes, 19 Girls and 18 Boys, fought tooth and nail from U13 to Open. They were cheered on heavily by their older team mates and had the opportunity to watch in amazement the true efforts of a very talented team. 31 medals were won this year compared to the 40 of last year but with the pressure of exams in Form 5 and 7, getting out onto the track has become ever more challenging. Regardless, those who were there strived to make up for any gaps. The Girls were outstanding in determination and resilience, achieving 7 Golds, 5 Silver and 5 Bronze medals. The boys followed in a similar fashion, with heart and soul, their achievement of 5 Golds, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals was a good day out.

Many congratulations to the following athletes who qualify for the National Finals at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham:

Cricket

It has been a stop and start season for the 1st XI due to inclement weather that has meant a total of 4 games have been lost to rain and a further 3 rain affected.

With the current record standing at played 15, won 12 and lost 3 it has once again been a really successful season, brilliantly led by Nicholas Kimber and Ben Lewin, who have been brilliantly supported by Charlie Morley, Harry Tattersall and Richard Bell the team is looking to take their current form into the BOWS Festival after the end of term. Where we play host to Brighton College, Wellington College and Sedbergh here on Doncaster Close.

Early season wins against , Stamford and the MCC saw the side get off to a great start. However a frustrating one wicket loss to The Leys in the National T20 should not overshadow some of the fantastic team performances that have included a 5 wicket win over Bedford and the 10 wicket wins over and Trent College.

The U15’s progressed superbly well in the National Cup competitions (both T20 and the 40 over ESCA National Competition) but frustratingly lost in both semi-finals. In the 40 over completion a real highlight was chasing down 244 runs to beat a very good Shrewsbury team in the quarter final. The side have been seen some outstanding performances from Freddie Fairey, Joe Johnson, William Lewin, Alex McNulty and Will Begy to name but a few of what are a very exciting side for the future.

Girls Football

The 1st XI were the National Runners Up in the Smith Construction ISFA Girls U18 Cup played at Bisham Abbey in May bringing to an end an outstanding as highlighted in last term’s “Achievements”.

In the Annual Quadrangular School’s Tournament against Uppingham, Oundle and Stamford, our very strong team on the day was too much for the competition and we won convincingly with fantastic contributions for the whole team. It was then time for the Annual Old Oakhamian Golf Day, a magnificent day that was capped off with William Chandler who shot a 4 over 74 to win the net competition on the day.

Congratulations to the team who won the Quadrangular Schools’ Tournament by 20 shots:

In a term dominated by the pressures of exams, Oakhamians have been their usual busy selves raising money for good causes, not least the boys of Sargants and Peterborough Houses who did a Sponsored Cycle ride around Rutland Water. From this, the boys of Sargants House raised more than £3000 for LIV Village, Natal, SA; the boys of Peterborough House raised more than £2500 for Salaam Shalom Kitchen Nottingham, which provides hot meals to those in need. Also in the Lower School, Ancaster House collected £150 during their ‘Soirée’ for the Rainbows charity.

In Middle School, The Clipsham boys walked 21km through the Rutland countryside, raising money for Rutland and Leicestershire Air Ambulance and have raised in excess of £4500. Barrow House raised around £300 for Build Africa, Missing Peoples and Love Support Unite from bacon roll sales. They also had a pancake sale, for Matt Hampson’s charity and Young Minds, raising £200. Chapmans boys took part in a Fun Run and raised £245 for Papyrus. In Rushebrookes House, there were two events raising around £200 for Cancer Research.

In the Upper School, the 1st VII Netball raised £80 for the Mind Charity. This was from the Netball match they played against the 1st XV Rugby team.

There has also been £30 raised for DSM Trust and for the Djanogly Sherwood Academy many books were collected and £75 in cash, which has been put into £5 book tokens to use as a reward for reading lots of books. For Water Aid £111.58 was raised. Added to all of these we have had the termly non-uniform day for Rainbows raising nearly £2000.

Well done to everyone who has helped raise over £13,345 in such a busy and short term bringing the total to the year to just over £30k.
