The Secretary-General, Moos Middelkoop, deliberately went out of his way to highlight the fact that Form 6 students Gregory Brunt and Joe Kelly delivered the best opening speeches at the international conference. Moos was quoted as saying: “We are always impressed by the grace, fluency and calmness of Oakham’s MUN debating teams and they are clearly a shining symbol of MUN excellence.” William Jacklin and Lara Phillipson were also highly commended for their research and resolution on complex issues. Moreover, Sophie Piggott who was part of the historical committee, was singled out for making fantastic contributions, including asking insightful questions to the resolutions. Oakhamians are now busy preparing to represent the Security Council nation Equatorial Guinea and Chile at Cheadle Hulme School. Oakham School 3 PERFORMING ARTS Music This has been another highly successful term of music performances at Oakham. Students have participated in nine Music at Lunchtime concerts in All Saints’ Church, one local church concert, three Informal Concerts, four major Chapel concerts and the Leavers’ Concert, as well as the Big Band Concert in the Doncaster Close marquee. In April, the Big Band gave a concert at St Michael and All Angels Church in Whitwell. They gave an excellent performance of contemporary and classic jazz that was much enjoyed by all, and raised over £1145 towards the upkeep of the church. At the beginning of May, the Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, Polyphonix & Wind Band performed in this year’s Friday Night Classics Concert, which featured music of great variety, from J S Bach to John Williams. Form 7 trombonist, Oliver Brunt, gave a notable performance of the challenging Romance for bass trombone by Weber. The Speech Day concert in the Chapel presented a collection of contrasting choral music. The Chapel Choir, Chamber Choir and soloists performed a range of works including Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus as well as a selection of Latvian choral music ahead of the Music Tour to Latvia in July. The Chapel Choir also gave the first performance of a newly commissioned work by Will Todd (For the beauty of the earth) to mark the retirement of Mr Lashbrook as Headmaster. Lower School musicians gave a delightful Lower School Live in Concert in early June, which featured performances from all the Lower School ensembles as well as many soloists. The final Chapel concert of the year, Orchestral Sounds, was our annual celebration of our talented orchestral players. The Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra performed an eclectic programme, which included Rossini’s Overture to William Tell and Canteloube’s Songs of the Auvergne, which featured Form 7 singer Lily McNeill as soprano soloist. As always, the Big Band Concert in the Doncaster Close Marquee was a massive hit with a capacity audience who came along to hear the band play. It was a fitting end to a successful term of music at Oakham School. The Music Department would like to take this opportunity to thank parents very much for your much-valued support at our concerts this academic year. This term has also seen a number of music achievements from individual students. We are delighted that Form 6 student William Collison has been awarded a place in the National Youth Choir of Great Britain for next academic year. Huge congratulations to Form 6 student Angelina Zhu who achieved the rare distinction of scoring 100% in her Grade 5 Theory exam in March, and to Form 1 pupil Evie Holder who won a number of awards at the recent Stamford Music Competition, including the All Saints’ Trophy for Excellence in Singing. Drama This term, the whole of the Lower School shared their talents in the annual Drama and Dance Showcase in the QET. The three events, Lower 1, Form 1 and Form 2, presented both dance and drama disciplines as each set performed pieces that were the culmination of their term of Performing Arts’ lessons. In Drama, Lower 1 performed extracts from T.S.Eliot’s Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, whilst Form 1 presented a variety of performance poetry ranging from the hilarious ‘School Life’ by Cheryl Thesira to the topical ‘Television’ by Roald Dahl and Form 2 staged selected tales from Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes. Oakham School 4 In dance, Lower 1 performed a fun, modern dance (with a few disco moves thrown in!) to Cat Scratch Fever and Form 1 showcased an array of different genres, including; a salsa dance to Zuku Zuku, an acrobatics routine to Tina Turner's Simply The Best, a highly energetic Bhangra dance to Hadippa and a funky hip-hop number to Run DMC's It's Like That. The show ended with a spectacular finale dance to The Greatest Showman, performed by the entire year group. The Form 2 dance numbers consisted of a street dance to In My Mind, In My Head, a fast and furious modern/jazz routine to Queen's Don't Stop Me Now, a slow contemporary dance to Michael Jackson's Man In The Mirror, and a charming jazz-style partner dance to a cover version of Bleeding Love. The evening finished on an energetic high with a finale dance to Walking On Sunshine. This year saw another successful one in terms of students being invited to join the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain; the highest accolade.
