5 National Program Portfolio

Journeys and Badges make up the majority of our National Program Portfolio.

Journeys and badges make up the National Program Portfolio. No matter where they are, a Girl Scout is having fun, learning, and gaining skills as they earn these same awards.

Journeys help Girl Scouts learn to address complex issues in a sustainable way. Together they identify an issue of concern, dig in to find the root causes, and work together to take action! Girl Scouts of all ages are leaders, making the word a better place.

As Girl Scouts mature, they find that the Take Action process they honed while doing a journey is the basis of their higher awards; the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.

Badges help Girl Scouts try new things and learn new skills. These skills come in handy while doing Take Action projects and in other aspects of life. At every level, there are badges in each of the Four Pillars: Outdoors, STEM, Entrepreneurship, and Life Skills.

In addition, there are other awards such as My Promise, My Faith, Journey Summit, VIT, and more. These are found in the Girl’s Guide to Girl .

7 Program Express Packs A Program Express kit is like an activity in a box for one individual. You select a topic and we mail it to you. Kits can be used by individuals, families, troops, or you can even purchase them for service unit events, troop meetings, birthday parties, or other gatherings!

Each kit contains an adult guide with instructions and most of the supplies for 3-4 activities (we assume you have things like scissors, tape, markers, or crayons), and a fun patch. When an activity supports a badge, you’ll see a notation in the adult guide. Since you purchased a Program Express, it is yours to keep.

We’re piloting three Multi-level (Daisy/Brownie/Junior) kits:

Step Outside Program Express: Provides games, observation, and art activities and can be used outside your meeting place, in your backyard, at a camp, or other outdoor site.

STEM Program Express: Provides four hands-on fun activities related to science, technology, engineering, and math.

Letterboxing Program Express: Provides information and supplies needed to learn about and try letterboxing. Build your own letterboxing kit with personal stamp, logbook, and inkpad. Each Program Express contains supplies to make one letterbox for you/your group to plant.

See more details and purchase Program Express at gsofct.org in the Girl Event registration area. The cost will be approximately $6-8 per kit, plus a flat rate shipping per order of $14. Most Program Express mailings can hold up to 10 kits. Example: 5 kits at $7 each plus $14 shipping = $49.

Service Unit Program Support – How Can We Help? The Program Department staff and volunteers love Girl Scout programming and want to share information, tips, and knowledge. Reach out for assistance to talk through an idea or to ask specific questions. We can help service unit volunteers and girls create a plan for new local events, revising existing events, learn about higher awards or bridging activities, or discuss any aspect of Girl Scout programming.

Examples: “We want to hold a Thinking Day event, but we haven’t had one in years. Where do we start?”

“What can Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors do?”

“We’d like to learn more about Girl Scout history or WAGGGS. What resources are available?”

“Can someone help describe what the higher awards are and how we can help prepare girls to earn them?”

Contact [email protected] with your request and a program specialist will connect with you to discuss what options are available.

Girl-led: Juniors decide what they want to do and can choose which events they would like to attend.

Learning by Doing: At events, Juniors are engaged and actively participate in hands-on experiences.

Cooperative Learning: We encourage Juniors to interact with Sister Girl Scouts in paired and group activities.

Remember to check the Multi-level section on page 54 for additional events Juniors can attend. The program resources on page 86 can support your troop meeting or individual experience. Remember to visit the Multi-level section for more opportunities!
