CCCaring for CONNECTICUT.....and Beyond 3 2011 CONNECTICUT STATE EMPLOYEES’ CAMPAIGN

DANNEL P. MALLOY GOVERNOR STATE OF CONNECTICUT Dear State Employee/Retiree,

Despite challenging economic times, thousands of you stepped up last year and made a commitment to helping others in need. The more than $1.7 million that the nonprofit community received through your contributions to the 2010 Connecticut State Employees’ Campaign (CSEC) supports a multitude of local and global charitable causes.

The impact that your generosity has on our state, our nation and the world is immeasurable. Be assured that every dollar pledged to the CSEC changes the life of a person that you may never meet, but is better off because of you.

As we embrace the campaign’s theme of “Caring for Connecticut...and Beyond” we are hopeful that our support will mean a better and brighter future for our residents and those living in other areas of the world. The hundreds of charitable organizations that are listed in the campaign directory can help us fulfill this goal.

Please consider a gift to the 2011 campaign and support charities that provide critically needed services, so together we can build a better tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Dannel P. Malloy Governor

For the Love of Labs

FTER THE PASSING OF BRANDY, our sweet 16-year-old yellow Labrador retriever in 2005, we could A not stand the emptiness in our home. Not that she was noisy, but her unconditional love and companionship was noticeably missed. We turned to PETFINDER.COM to see about adopting a Labrador that was in need of a family from a shelter. That is how we found Killingworth based Labs4rescue (WWW.LABS4RESCUE.COM). [Editor’s note: This charity is listed on pg. 27.]

Labs4rescue is a rescue organization of volunteers promoting responsible pet ownership. They are breed specific, rescuing Labradors and Lab mixed breed dogs from overpopulated shelters. In some high kill shelters, most dogs only get 3 days to be adopted before they are euthanized. Labs4rescue works with volunteers to rescue the Labs and Lab mixes from these high kill shel- ters into a network of foster homes where they are examined by licensed veterinarians, spayed or neutered, and receive all shots before they are offered for adoption. They also help CT citizens that surrender dogs due to family breakups, changes in the economy and other circumstances. Volunteer Adoption Coordinators guide the adopting families to the right dog.

We adopted our first dog Fenway, a yellow lab mix puppy, in June, 2005. Five months later, wanting to do something as a family to make a difference, we started fostering dogs. Fostering a shelter dog gets them out of the shelter and into a home, where they can be seen by adopting families while settling into home life. It also opens a spot for another dog to be rescued from the high kill shelters.

We adopted Leroy, a black Lab, the following No- vember. By then we had fostered and helped place more than a dozen dogs. Now we have fostered over 40 dogs. It is fun to watch as they settle into home life. Some have not seen stairs before, while others act like they have never had toys. Winter was especially fun for them with all the snow. On average they are with us about 3 or 4 weeks. Leroy and Fenway are very good with all the foster dogs that came into our home. They make friends with the dogs easily and help them quickly learn the "rules of the house." We en- joy meeting the families that adopt our foster dogs and are proud to say that many have be- come close friends. JJJBohn BBBradleyradleyradley JUDICIAL BRANCH

'VE SERVED AS MY OFFICE'S CAMPAIGN COORDINATOR (Department of I Social Services in the Willimantic office) for a number of years. It's a wonderful opportunity to engage staff in creating a program of fund-raising events and activities throughout the Campaign season that everyone looks forward to.

Whether it's a perennial favorite, like "Trash or Treasure," the chimichanga luncheon or the paper airplane-flying contest, everyone is involved and focused not only on the "spirit of giving," but also on having some necessary fun. What a combo!

A Difficult Journey Made Easier

Y DAUGHTER GABRIELLE IS A HAPPY, ACTIVE NINE YEAR OLD. To M look at her beautiful smiling face, you would never know that she made her entrance into the world at 30 weeks gestation. I am very thankful to the wonderful care that she was given during a 78 day hospitalization. I am equally grateful to the Ronald McDonald House, which was located close to the hospital, for giving me a place to stay until my daughter was well enough to be discharged.

One of our 700 participating charities in the CT State Employees' Campaign, the Ronald McDonald House took care of all of my needs, allowing me to focus solely on my daughter. The happiest day of my life was when Gabby was allowed to finally go home.

I will never forget the kindness extended to me by the staff at the Ronald McDonald House. The journey that Gabby and I took nine years ago would have been more difficult if it weren’t for the Ronald McDonald House.

HELP WANTED:

INCE 1996 NEARLY 300 STATE EMPLOYEES/RETIREES have participated in the campaign’s SSSloaned employee program. We are grateful to the many state agency Commissioners/ Executive Directors who have given approval to one or more of their employees to assist with the coordination and administration of the campaign. These loaned employees serve as a primary contact for local campaigns throughout the state and are a critical link between state employees and the more than 700 charities that the campaign supports.

What are the benefits of participating? A commit- ment to participate in the program is a solid invest- ment and uniting factor for the department and the campaign. For the employee, it means oppor- tunity for growth, development, and improvement of people skills, organizational skills and leadership. Participation allows for an introduction to areas of the campaign that employees might not otherwise encounter in their daily duties. And, the best aspect of the program is that participation improves Connecticut, making a better place to live and to work.

What is Leadership Giving? Leadership giving is a personal gift of $500 or more to the Connecticut State Employees’ Campaign for Charitable Giving. Leadership Givers respond to the ongoing needs in our community and provide a strong example for other contributors to follow.

Where does my Leadership Gift go? You may designate your gift to any number of the more than 700 charitable organizations that participate in the Connecticut State Employees’ Campaign.

What do state employees receive for their pledge? State employees receive knowledge that their gift will make a difference in the support of quality programs that strive to provide ways for people to help themselves, and recognition by their colleagues as a committed community leader.
