UNEARTHING MATERIAL CULTURE: HOLOCAUST OBJECT BIOGRAPHIES AS EVIDENCE OF LIFE. JEANNE JEBSON MA by research University of York Archaeology December 2020 ABSTRACT Archaeological material culture provides interpretations regarding past human life. Increasingly this material culture has been used to explore the personal life and the biographies of individuals immersed in the past (eg Joy 2009; Grassby 2005). This dissertation has applied this premise to material culture associated with the Holocaust and has explored the possibility of an affective dissemination format with the inclusion of object biographies. The research hypothesis stated “a Holocaust artefact when accompanied by an object biography has a greater emotional affect on an audience than an object without a biography”. The data from a questionnaire allowed a comparison of 120 participant emotional responses to four objects with a biography to the responses to six objects without a biography. The data also encouraged supplementary enquiries exploring the affect of different object types and how participant gender and age impacts on emotional responses to Holocaust artefacts. The research results demonstrated that there is a significant difference between the emotional responses for items with and without an object biography; items with an object biography produced a higher emotional response from participants. The results also demonstrated a correlation between Holocaust object type and emotional response; higher emotional responses did correlate with personal items, items associated with a specific group and sentimental items. Additionally, a weak but positive correlation with gender and emotional response was identified. A significant difference between male and female emotional responses was determined indicating that female participants had higher emotional response scores. -

Nezval wrote. 3 A Slavic city with over a thousand years of history, but a city which at the same time, due to historical conditions, belongs rather to the culture of the West. The capital of the Czechs in which, however, an important part has always been played by foreign ethnic communities. But this arti- cle is no place to present historical panoramas and details. Presner, Co-Chair Professor Roman Koropeckyj, Co-Chair My dissertation investigates the cinematic representation of forced migration (due to the border changes enacted by the Yalta and Potsdam conferences in 1945) in East Germany, West Germany, and Poland, from 1945–1970. My thesis is that, while the representations of these forced migrations appear infrequently in feature film during this period, they not only exist, but perform an important function in the establishment of foundational national narratives in the audiovisual sphere. Rather than declare the existence of some sort of visual taboo, I determine, firstly, why these images appear infrequently; secondly, how and to what purpose(s) existing representations are mobilized; and, thirdly, their relationship to popular and official discourses. -

THE UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER ABSTRACT FOR THESIS FACULTY OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES Doctor of Philosophy Holocaust Education in British Society and Culture Kara Critchell Moving away from traditional encounters with Holocaust education in academic research this study explores the role of Holocaust education in the construction and mediation of British historical consciousness of the Holocaust. Following contextual explorations of the role of two of the most dominant symbols to have emerged within the field of Holocaust education since the establishment of the National Curriculum, the Holocaust survivor and Auschwitz-Birkenau, this study closely analyses the way in which each of these Holocaust icons has been represented and utilised within educational programmes promoted by the Holocaust Educational Trust. It is shown that the educational representations of these symbols contribute to the domestication of Holocaust consciousness within a British narrative, reinforcing positive interpretations of British national identity and the benefits of liberal democracy whilst, simultaneously, distancing the crimes committed during the Holocaust from the British public through representing these acts as the very antithesis of what is deemed to be British. Through such analysis it is demonstrated that Holocaust education, as it exists in Britain today, reflects the British context in which it has evolved whilst illustrating how it has also fundamentally been shaped by this same context. -
A Heuristic Study of the Meaning of Suffering Among Holocaust Survivors

C MOORE CO-PROMOTER: DR W J SCHURINK JUNE 19% ABSTRACT Is there meaning in suffering or ts suffering only a soul-destroying experience from which nothing positive can emerge? In seeking to answer this question, a heuristic study was made of the experiences and views of the famous Auschwitz survivor, Viktor Frankl, supplemented by an exploration of the life-worlds of other Nazi concentration camp survivors. The underlying premise was that if meaning can be found in the worst sufferings imaginable, then meaning can be found in every other situation of suffering. Seeking to illuminate the views of Frankl and to gain a deeper grasp of the phenomenon of suffering, the theoretical and personal views of mainstream psychologists regarding the nature of man and the meaning of hi.~ sufferings were studied. Since the focus of this research was on the suffering of the Holocaust survivor, the Holocaust as the context of the present study, was studied as a crisis of meaning and as psychological adversity. In trying to establish the best way to gain entry into the life-world of the Holocaust survivor, the research methods employed in Holocaust survivor studies were reviewed and, for the purposes of this study, found wanting. The choice and employment of a heuristic method yielded rich data which illuminated the fact that, through a series of heroic choices Frankl, and the survivors who became research participants, could attain spiritual triumph in the midst of suffering caused by an evil and inhumane regime. -
Teaching the Holocaust Nonfiction Resources
TEACHING THE HOLOCAUST NONFICTION RESOURCES This list has been compiled to assist educators in their search for literature to use in teaching the Holocaust to children at all grade levels, K-12. This list is comprehensive but certainly not exhaustive. This research aid contains NONFICTION books whose primary topic is Jewish children who lived during or through the Holocaust. Comprising it is a mixture of literature about Jewish children who did survive the Holocaust and those who did not (most of which are in diary format). Although far fewer in number, books that tell of a person’s life after the War (i.e. in Eretz Israel or the United States) have also been included. Poetry can be found on the fiction resources list. A title’s inclusion herein was based solely upon whatever summary of a book could be found, which has been provided (copied-and-pasted) along with its source (as a website address). The author of this listing made very minor corrections to summaries where needed, including but not limited to: italicizing book titles; changing foreign words (to make spelling uniform throughout); editing for overall mechanics and spelling. Not included in this listing: • Any books whose title suggested appropriateness for inclusion on this list but for which a summary could not be found. • Books whose primary topic is of others (adults or children) who helped Jewish children (to hide, etc.) during the Holocaust or who helped to rescue them. • Books told from the perspective of a non-Jewish child who may have witnessed the mistreatment of Jews or assisted any Jewish person in some way. -

Soter ________________________ Adviser College of Education Copyright by Alexander Anthony Hernandez 2004 ABSTRACT The professional literature of the Holocaust is replete with research, references, and recommendations that a study of the Holocaust, particularly for middle and high school students, is most effective when combined with an extensive use of Holocaust literature. Scholars and educators alike advocate the use of first-person testimony whenever and wherever possible in order to personalize the Holocaust lessons for the student. This study explore students’ responses to first-person Holocaust narratives through the lens of reader response theory in order to determine if prolonged engagement with the literature enhances affective learning. This study also explores the students’ sense of personal ethics and their perceptions on moral decision-making. By examining their responses during prolonged engagement with first-person narratives, herein referred to as witness narratives, and evaluating these responses based on moral development theories developed by Kohlberg and Gilligan, the study also seeks to determine whether there are significant differences in the nature of response that can be attributed to gender. Lastly, the study explores students’ views on racism, and how or if an extended lesson on the Holocaust causes affective change in students’ perceptions of racism and their role in combating it within our society.
