Find Out More About Cancer SCS Screening Services At No Cost
Dear Friends of SCS
No one fights cancer alone. Indeed! More than 6,500 participants and volunteers came together providing inspiration and hope in support of the cancer community at our 15-hour overnight Singapore Cancer Society - TalkMed Relay For Life 2018. Spirits remained high from dusk to dawn as participants walked and ran alongside those impacted by cancer.
President Halimah Yacob, Speaker of Mr Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin and Mayor of North West District Dr Teo Ho Pin also threw in their valuable support for the cancer community at Singapore Cancer Society – TalkMed Relay For Life 2018. We are most grateful to them, celebrities & performers, partners, sponsors, and the Singapore community for your endorsement of the work that we do, and helping to raise over $830,000* to minimise cancer and maximise life.
SCS continuously advocates for everyone to join in the fight against cancer by taking personal charge of their own health, to exercise regularly, eat healthily, go for early cancer screening, stay sun safe, consume less alcohol and not to smoke.
We will be raising further awareness of the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle at our World Health Day carnival on 6 April. Together with Singapore Heart Foundation, we want to encourage Singaporeans to be physically active and pay close attention to what they eat. Do make this the start of your healthy lifestyle habit.

Singapore Cancer Society – TalkMed Relay For Life 2018 spurred thousands of participants and volunteers, raised over $830,000*
The 15-hour overnight community event Singapore Cancer Society – TalkMed Relay for Life 2018, was officially launched by Guest of Honour President Halimah Yacob at the National Stadium @ Sports Hub on 10 March.
6,500 participants came together to Celebrate cancer survivors, Remember those who have passed on and Fight Back against a disease with cancer awareness. The symbolic Relay, whether participants choose to walk or run, is a show of solidarity to the cancer community that no one needs to fight cancer alone. More than $830,000* was raised and will go towards life- saving cancer treatments and welfare aid.
Cancer survivors were given the honour of walking the first lap in the tradition of Relay For Life. President Halimah Yacob joined them in the second lap around the track in celebration of the survivors who have won the fight against cancer.
Speaker of Parliament, Mr Tan Chuan Jin joined the Relay with cancer survivors and graced the event as the Guest-of-Honour to flag-off the morning’s final 3-hour Fight Back segment with Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District. The Speaker of Parliament and Mayor also launched the SCS Fight Cancer Programme @ North West. This programme will benefit residents of North West and reduce the incidence of cancer through Awareness (empowering with cancer knowledge via technology; Action (regular screening for Colorectal, Cervical and Breast cancers); and Advocacy (providing support to caregivers and cancer patients through a Caregivers Network).
“The scale of the Singapore community coming together in support of fighting cancer is a significant impact on efforts to raise cancer awareness. It shows that people are willing to go beyond donating, by embracing the opportunity to reach out and be there, and to contribute in ways that bring hope and encouragement to those impacted by cancer,” said Mr Foo Hee Jug, Chairman of the Singapore Cancer Society – TalkMed Relay For Life 2018.
“Medicine has made tremendous strides in treating cancer, and as a result, an increasing number of people are being cured, or are able to enjoy a better quality of life. However, the battle is not yet won. TalkMed is proud to play its part in celebrating survivors, remembering those who have passed on, and continuing to fight back against this disease,” said Dr Ang Peng Tiam, the Chief Executive of TalkMed Group.
Singapore Cancer Society has organised Relay For Life since 2017, and Singapore was the 25th country to join the world-wide movement to bring the community together to join in the fight against cancer. There are 29 countries in the global movement started in 1933.

Singapore Cancer Society to kick off World Health Day with a carnival on 6 April
To encourage the habit of going for early and regular health checks, visitors to the carnival who meet screening criteria will be able to collect a Faecal Immunochemical Test kit, sign up for a pap smear and book a screening mammogram, all available at no cost.
SCS World Health Day carnival will be held at Tanjong Pagar Centre Urban Park in the heart of the Central Business District, from 11am to 7pm. There will be lunchtime talks on nutrition and traditional Chinese medicine, and an interactive exhibition on lowering the risk of diseases like cancer and heart disease. The carnival will end with a Zumba workout session at 6 pm as the start of one’s journey towards a healthier and more active lifestyle.
Together with Singapore Heart Foundation, SCS hopes to inspire Singaporeans to reduce their risk of getting cancer and heart disease by being physically active and paying close attention to their diet.
SCS aims to raise awareness of the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. The leading causes of mortality among Singaporeans are major non-communicable diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
World Health Day on 7 April is observed globally as a health awareness day that aims to draw attention to pertinent health issues. Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) will kick off World Health Day with a carnival on 6 April. “Be Active!” is the SCS theme.

Rehabilitation and Therapy helping her walk again
Madam Thong Jinli, 65, clearly remembers the first time she arrived at the SCS Cancer Rehabilitation Centre (CRC). She recounted, “I was in a wheelchair and had to be pushed by my caregiver. I was depressed and thought that I would never be able to walk again.”
In January 2017, Madam Thong was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells. She lost her mobility after she underwent a Stem Cell Transplant to treat her multiple myeloma in September 2017. The procedure was a success but it affected Madam Thong’s nerves. As a result, Madam Thong was confined to a wheelchair as she suffered pain in her kneecaps and on the soles of her feet and often experienced breathlessness.
Singapore General Hospital referred Madam Thong to the SCS CRC where she joined the Specialised Rehabilitation Programme in November 2017. Madam Thong received customised physical and occupational therapy under the supervision of our therapists. With the help of specialised gym equipment at the SCS CRC, Madam Thong was able to keep active and improve her fitness, with her progress monitored closely after each session. In addition, her therapist provided guidance on different types of exercises she could do at home on a daily basis to help speed up her rehabilitation.

In just a span of 8 weeks, Madam Thong’s condition improved and she was able to walk unaided for short distances without any pain of shortness of breath. Madam Thong credits this to the SCS CRC and the Specialised Rehabilitation Programme.
She said: “I doubt I could have improved so quickly if not for SCS CRC and I am very happy with my progress!”
