The weavers are known as Karigars that means craftsmen. In earlier days only silver and golden wire were used, but now it is replaced with duplicate. Bold and complicated floral and foliage patterns are also made with the use of Kalga, Bel, Butis, designs. Banarsi sarees are world famous for this reproduction, Banarsi Zari work comes mainly in pure silk (Katan), organza (Kora), georgette and Shattir. Various types of silk, and other materials are used in contemporary times. This paper tried to explored the main problems of the craftsmen and throw light on an individual capacity and learnt about weaving process of brocade produced by artisans with the help of hand, tools, and machines. Ever since, a lot of government entities have advocated for an increased number of registrations; providing a glimmer of hope to communities that things would change for good. This paper briefly introduces you to the concept of GIs and its history. Things have not been so black and white in this context for India. There are various problems faced by producers post the registration process and the GI remains somewhat symbolic in nature. The paper highlights how much of these GI-tagged products stand marred by those disadvantages which come with lack of quality control and scientific vigour. The Banarasi and Venkatagiri sarees, along with the Pashmina Silk face adversities even though they are registered as GIs. The issue of genericide is also discussed, emphasising on how we ought to have kept its scope narrower than it is in India. However, there also exists a silver lining. There are also some success stories, which although are less in number, provide deep insights into how we can improve the status quo. The Darjeeling tea and Chanderi saree are foremost examples. By showing our successes and failures as two parallels, this piece advocates for betterment through resolution of the different problems highlighted.

But despite producing high-value added products with skilled labor, artisans usually work in the “informal sector” under precarious working conditions and for low wages due to a subordinate position in the value-chain (Scrase 2003; Basole and Basu 2011). Their livelihoods are further threatened by commercial imitation and passing-off of mechanized products as craft (Fowler 2004). Recently, there has been a lot of interest in improving artisanal livelihoods and preserving crafts via participation in global markets.1 International institutions such as the World Bank and the World Intellectual Property Organization have proposed the integration of artisanal knowledge into existing intellectual property regimes as the solution to creating brand identity, discouraging imitation, and enhancing incomes (Finger and Schuler 2004; WIPO 2008). This debate is part of a broader discourse on how (and whether) traditional and indigenous knowledge (TK/IK) can be protected within the institutional framework of international trade and intellectual property rights (Gervais 2005; Arewa 2006; Drahos 2011; Frankel 2011a,b).     Banarasi Saree is a royal fabric, Banarasi saree is popular even in moden avatar The Banarasi saree is a grand affair. Known for its gold threads or silver zari work, it was once an exclusive out-of-reach fabric meant for the royal families. Today it is available in a wide and affordable range of traditional and trendy designs with a lot of accompaniments. The Banarasi saree is from Benares or Varanasi. Known for its gold and silver brocade or zari work, it is generally accompanied by rich embroidery, intricate designs and engravings. Designs from the Mughal period are mainly the base for these engravings, such as floral intertwining, motifs of leaves on the borders and the body. Kimkhab, potthan, betta and amru are some of the famous brocades woven on banarasi saris. Other distinctive features are heavy gold work, intricate weaving, detailing work, metallic effects which contribute to the richness and grandeur of the saree. In the proccess, they also make the fabric slightly heavy. The finery and trappings of the Banarasi Saree are reason enough for it to figure in any Indian wedding. As Bridal attire, it provides an extremely rich look and feel for the occasion. Based on design the Banarasi sari has been classified as Pure Silk, Organza, Georgette and Shattir. Again based on cut methods they are classified differently. Beautiful combinations for Banarasi Sarees have evolved and are suitable for different ocasions. Where a product holds characteristics that clearly indicate its reference to a place in terms of quality, essentially attributed things such as reputation, it is said to have a geographical indication. Where most things become synonymous with the land, that they sometimes lose their own identity leading to an interchangeable use of the geographical name with the good like the ‘banarasi brocade’or ‘phulkari’. The reason for getting it under the Intellectual Property Right radar is that it becomes the selling point as well as that characteristic which solely differentiates the good out of the crowd, sometimes to an extent of premium pricing as well.
