  • Running Head: POPULAR PEDAGOGY in CANADIAN TELEVISION
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Brock University Digital Repository Running head: POPULAR PEDAGOGY IN CANADIAN TELEVISION Popular Pedagogy in Canadian Television: A Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis of Trailer Park Boys Andrew Haddow, B.A. (Hons.) Department of Graduate Studies in Education Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education Faculty of Education, Brock University St. Catharines, Ontario © Andrew Haddow, 2017 POPULAR PEDAGOGY IN CANADIAN TELEVISION Abstract This major research paper studied the representations of masculinity in the Canadian television program Trailer Park Boys from the perspective of public pedagogy and education. Motivated by a desire to expose how patriarchal discourses are learned through everyday practices and texts, a methodology of feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) was formulated. Trailer Park Boys is a long-running mockumentary series set in a fictional trailer park near Halifax, Nova Scotia. It focuses on a cast of male characters with exaggerated personalities, and is satirical in tone. Prior to the main analysis of this paper, a collection of relevant literature was conducted and an opportunity to address a lack of gender-focused studies of Canadian television, including Trailer Park Boys, was noted. This study used the feminist CDA method to analyze what masculinities were reinforced as normal or abnormal in Seasons 3 and 9 of the program, based on the understanding that popular culture is a site of everyday learning. After the data was collected episode-by-episode, it became apparent that the themes of family, authority, and sexuality were helpful in understanding what relationship Trailer Park Boys had with traditional representations of heteronormative masculinity.

April 6-11, 2010 2010 a comedy odyssey PRODUCED BY FESTIVAL SPONSOR THE 2010 WINNIPEG COMEDY FESTIVAL - AN ODYSSEY NINE YEARS IN THE MAKING. February 22, 2010 (Winnipeg) – It’s nearly that time of year again, when dozens of comics from across the nation hold the city hostage with big laughs and side-splitting mirth. Running April 6-11, 2010, it’s our biggest festival yet, featuring 70 comics and 29 shows in six short nights. What makes this festival so big? Let’s start at the beginning. Tuesday, April 6th we launch the festival with a bang by hosting the Trevor Boris DVD Release/Homecoming 2010 show. When Winnipeg’s favourite farmboy-turned-Much Music-host Trevor Boris announced his intentions to return home to launch his new DVD with Warner Brothers, we decided to join forces and create a show celebrating Trevor and other fine Manitoba ex-pats Irwin Barker and Bruce Clark, as well as current Winnipeggers Al Rae and Chantel Marostica. Wednesday marks our eighth year of the fantastic Opening Night show with the Manitoba Lotteries, hosted this year by none other than the prodigal son, Trevor Boris! The show has swollen from the traditional four to six talented performers; Greg Morton, Derek Edwards, Arthur Simeon, Scott Faulconbridge and Karen O’Keefe. Next comes four nights of galas, including five recorded-for-broadcast CBC galas. We kick off on Thursday with the Edumacation Show, hosted by Gerry Dee and featuring half a dozen cerebral comics including David Hemstad and Jon Dore. Friday night we’ve got two fantastic galas.

President Nixon was in the White House and the U.S. was at war in Vietnam. The image of the picture‐perfect, stay‐at‐home housewife with the ideal husband and family was being threatened. Forces of change—a sexual revolution, the use of hallucinogenic drugs and a new founded challenge to authority—had crept into family rooms and dinning table conversations. Raised in a traditional Christian family, Perry leads a sheltered life, always doing what is expected of him. He has a wonderful virgin Christian girlfriend, Dorothy. He attends church with his family on Sundays and enjoys family dinners. He is following a career path that will prevent him from being drafted to fight in Vietnam. As a chemist he is book smart and company driven, but doesn’t know the harsh realities of the world. Everything he believes in is challenged the day he is chosen to be a jury member in a hippie death cult murder trial, where the defendant on trial is a strikingly beautiful woman named Leslie.

  • Canadian Humour
Canadian humour Canadian humour is an integral part of the Canadian Identity. There are several traditions in Canadian humour in both English and French. While these traditions are distinct and at times very different, there are common themes that relate to Canadians' shared history and geopolitical situation in North America and the world. Various trends can be noted in Canadian comedy. One thread is the portrayal of a "typical" Canadian family in an on-going radio or television series. Examples include La famille Plouffe, with its mix of drama, humour, politics and religion and sitcoms such as King of Kensington and La Petite Vie. Another major thread tends to be political and cultural satire: television shows such as CODCO, Royal Canadian Air Farce, La Fin du monde est à 7 heures and This Hour Has 22 Minutes, monologuists such as Yvon Deschamps and Rick Mercer and writers, including Michel Tremblay, Will Ferguson and Eric Nicol draw their inspiration from Canadian and Québécois society and politics. Another trend revels in absurdity, demonstrated by television series like The Kids in the Hall and The Frantics, and musician-comedians such as The Arrogant Worms, Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie and Bowser and Blue. Satire is arguably the primary characteristic of Canadian humour, evident in each of these threads, and uniting various genres and regional cultural differences. Humber College in Toronto and the École nationale de l'humour in Montreal offer post-secondary programmes in comedy writing and performance. Montreal is also home to the bilingual (English and French) Just For Laughs festival and to the Just for Laughs museum, a bilingual, international museum of comedy.

  • Due South and the Canadian Image: Three Perspectives
Due South and the Canadian image: Three perspectives Marsha Ann Tate Valerie Allen The Pennsylvania State University Last updated: October 19, 2004 2 Due South and the Canadian image: Three perspectives Due South was one of the most successful TV series ever produced in Canada and the first Canadian television show to air on one of the big three American networks in prime time1 (McKay 1997, B7). The program, produced by Alliance Communications, debuted as a telemovie simulcast on CTV in Canada and CBS in the U.S. in April 1994 and was subsequently developed into an hour-long weekly series for broadcast on those same two networks as part of their 1994/95 television season. Despite critical acclaim and respectable ratings Due South 's fortunes were short-lived on American network primetime television. Soon after its debut, Jeff Sagansky, President of CBS Entertainment and the show's primary supporter departed the network. The loss of the show's patron saint at CBS led to frequent preemptions, schedule shuffles, and episodes aired out of sequence (Phillips 1997, A16; Atherton 1995, P7). Due South's cancellation by CBS at the end of the 1994/95 season would mark the first of several “neardeath experiences” (“American graffiti Canadian-style,” 1995, 12). Over the course of several years Due South would be canceled, renewed, and then canceled again by CBS followed by re-funding and renewal without CBS's participation2. It continued as a primetime series on CTV for two more seasons3 and as of January 1999 had been syndicated in 149 territories worldwide including the United States4 (“World Travelers,” 1999).

Introduction I am Manager of Rights Administration for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Radio-Canada (CBC/Radio-Canada) at the Head Office in Ottawa. I have worked for the CBC since 1980. For the last 15 years, I have served as Chairman of the Canadian Claimants Group (CCG). Those responsibilities called for me to be familiar with the English television network’s programming, and rights administration.
