A Genealogical Dictionary of Individuals Buried in the Cemeteries of Hollis, New Hampshire A Genealogical Dictionary of Individuals Buried in the Cemeteries of Hollis New Hampshire Volume Three East Cemetery compiled by Joan Child Tinklepaugh A Short History of East Cemetery East Cemetery was established in the mid 1800’s on property donated to the town by the Lovejoy Family. It was originally part of the the Augustus Lovejoy farm which was located on “Lovejoy Hill” on the road to Nashua (Broad Street). Ralph and Abby Lovejoy, the parents of Augustus are buried on the hill at East under a spreading tree. Many of their ancestors occupy lots elsewhere in the cemetery the family gave to the Town of Hollis that is located on Wheeler Road. This property was later added to by a gift from Henry Hildreth . The East Cemetery quickly became the major cemetery in Hollis by the early 1900’s as the town’s other cemeteries became over populated. Some of the burials in East are re-interments from other town cemeteries such as the Church Yard and South, There are about 1300 souls in East Cemetery, the earliest burial being that of Melvina Rideout in 1856. This cemetery also has the largest number of US War Veterans and contains the remains of those who fought in the US Civil War, the two World Wars, Korea and Vietnam. About this Genealogical Dictionary This volume includes all known persons in the East Cemetery of Hollis New Hampshire. Both marked and unmarked graves are included. Individuals are arranged in family groups and the family groups are arranged alphabetically. There is an index to all burials at the end of the volume where women are listed under their maiden names. There is also a bibliography of sources used in the compiling of information for the series of volumes in this work. These sources are all locally available and checking the ones listed under a family of interest may give more information. Also check the computerized data base at the Hollis Historical Society. There may be more information on an individual or family you are seeking. The following information is given about each individual if known: Birth- Death Date, Birth -Death Place, Father, Mother, Spouse, Children,(not always a complete list), some biographical information, epitaphs and useful information on the tombstone. An individual who is buried in the East Cemetery has a name printed in bold type. Each family group is followed by a series of footnotes indicating the source for that note. All information is subject to the usual caveats about correctness and any additional information is much appreciated. The following symbols are used: * indicates an individual referred to in the text who is also buried in the Church Yard Cemetery . # an unmarked burial + an individual who has been in military service. Acknowledgments There are four volumes covering every Hollis Cemetery in this Dictionary. This is the third volume Compiling this work has taken a great deal of time and effort on the part of several people. I would especially like to thank Phyllis Houle for her untiring efforts in transcribing the information on the cemetery stones, particularly the work done on the Church Yard markers which are the most difficult to read. Phyllis did the entire transcription of this cemetery and helped with many others as well as doing some obituary research on individuals. Without her help this project would not have been completed in a reasonable time period. Another person who deserves much credit is Sharon Howe, who has been working on the companion project to this work, photographing all the remaining stones in each cemetery. Be sure to check these photographs when you are doing research as the location of the graves in which you are interested will be noted with the photo. Thanks also go to Mary Brickley, Martha Rogers and Arthur Sherburne, who transcribed and photographed the Lawrence Cemetery off of Route 111. • History of the Chippewa Valley
HISTORY OF THE CHIPPEWA VALLEY Faithful Record of all Important Events, Incidents, and Circumstances that have Transpired in the Valley of the Chippewa from its Earliest Settlement by White People, Indian Treaties, Organization of the Territory and State; Also of the Counties Embracing the Valley, Senatorial, Assembly and Congressional Districts, and a Brief Biographical Sketch of the Most Prominent Persons in the Settlement of the Valley. BY Thomas E. Randall 1875 Free Press Print Eau Claire, Wisconsin 1 PREFACE When this work was commenced as a contribution to the columns of the Free Press, it was not with the expectation of making a book, nor were the difficulties, and labor, of gathering the materials and connecting the facts – determining what should be included in, and what excluded from such a work – fully realized. The first settlers in a new country find little time of inclination to record even the most stirring events in journals or diaries, and hence many are very reluctant when called upon to make statements in regard to circumstances with which they are known to have been perfectly familiar. Others took when applied to for information can remember nothing, except what pertained exclusively to themselves, and seem to consider all else as unworthy of record; and others still so modest that it has been difficult to prevail upon them to relate such things in their experiences as have been deemed essential to this work. Of the many parties appealed to, to furnish the data on which many of the facts herein set forth, are founded, I cannot withhold the names of Hiram S.
