Box 365 Lapwai, ID 83540 Julie Simpson, Air Quality Program Coordinator phone 208.621.3818 fax 208.843.7411 [email protected] Funding Requested: $418,789 Total Project Cost: $418,789 Project Period: May 1, 2015 - April 30, 2018 DUNS number: 078208303 Lewiston-Clarkston Valley Formaldehyde Study Page 2 of 10 Basis and Rationale: Submitted to the Community-Scale Monitoring category, the proposed Lewiston- Clarkston (LC) Valley Formaldehyde (HCHO) Study will identify sources of elevated carbonyls found in the year long community monitoring assessment the Nez Perce Tribe (NPT) conducted in 2006/2007 in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley (LC Valley) and on the Nez Perce Reservation in North Central Idaho. Data analysis results and recommendations competed by Sonoma Technology, Inc. for the 2006/2007 study clearly identified the need for additional research (McCarthy et al, 2009): Concentrations of formaldehyde [HCHO] and acetaldehyde were much higher than expected for an area of Lewiston’s size. Because HCHO is the largest contributor to cancer risk among the pollutants measured and acetaldehyde is a significant contributor, this result is significant. Concentrations of HCHO and acetaldehyde were highest in the summer months but did not appear to be related to special events like large wildfires. Secondary production of HCHO and acetaldehyde are most likely to be responsible for the seasonal pattern but it is unclear why concentrations are higher in the Lewiston area than at other sites in the Inland Northwest. -

Box 52 Hawaii National Park, HI 96718 November, 2004 Mauna Loa Reconnaissance 2003 Executive Summary and Acknowledgements The Mauna Loa Reconnaissance project was designed to generate archival and inventory/survey level recordation for previously known and unknown cultural resources within the high elevation zones (montane, sub-alpine, and alpine) of Mauna Loa. Field survey efforts included collecting GPS data at sites, preparing detailed site plan maps and feature descriptions, providing site assessment and National Register eligibility, and integrating the collected data into existing site data bases within the CRM Division at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HAVO). Project implementation included both pedestrian transects and aerial transects to accomplish field survey components and included both NPS and Research Corporation University of Hawaii (RCUH) personnel. Reconnaissance of remote alpine areas was needed to increase existing data on historic and archeological sites on Mauna Loa to allow park managers to better plan for future projects. The reconnaissance report includes a project introduction; background sections including physical descriptions, cultural setting overview, and previous archeological studies; fieldwork sections describing methods, results, and feature and site summaries; and a section on conclusions and findings that provide site significance assessments and recommendations. -

This document serves as a data dictionary for the existing vegetation, historical vegetation, and potential natural vegetation databases, as described below: • Interpretation of aerial photography acquired in 1995, 1996, and 1997 was used to characterize existing (current) conditions. The 1996 and 1997 photography was obtained after cessation of the Bull and Summit wildfires in order to characterize post-fire conditions. The database name is: 97veg. • Interpretation of late-1930s and early-1940s photography was used to characterize historical conditions. These forbs may be less suitable for the landscape because of growth habit, aggressiveness, difficulty in propagating and growing, rarity, or it simply may be that we haven’t yet tried to do anything with them. For a list of Palouse forbs which may be more suitable for landscaping and about which we have more information to share, please see “Characteristics and Uses of Native Palouse Forbs in Landscaping.” Nomenclature used in this document also follows Hitchcock, C. In order to facilitate searching for a particular species, we have included some common names and alternate scientific names, but this is by no means intended to be a comprehensive source of common names or synonyms. Requires a moist site. Easy to grow from seed. Plants have a minty smell and a very interesting flower. Common names include nettle-leafed giant hyssop, horsemint. Agoseris grandiflora is not a particularly attractive plant, it looks rather like a weed. Short-lived and attracts rodents, which eat the taproot and kill the plants. Easy to grow from seed, which is wind-borne and goes everywhere. -

Flowers are borne at the top of the new growth. Photo by James Locklear. hlox douglasii is a name covering…a multitude of in 1820, and helped develop the Glasgow Botanic Garden botanical sins.” So wrote Ira Gabrielson in his 1932 where his path crossed that of a newly hired gardener (David classic, Western American Alpines, and so I discovered Douglas). S. Fish and Wildlife Service ABSTRACT Spalding’s catchfly (Silene spaldingii) is a rare plant endemic to the bunchgrass, sagebrush, and open pine communities of the inland Pacific Northwest. Large portions of these habitats have been eliminated by cultivation or degraded by livestock grazing. Spalding’s catchfly was listed as Threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 2001. The largest occurrence of Spalding’s catchfly in Idaho is south of Lewiston in the Snake River Canyon, along the western flank of Craig Mountain. The Craig Mountain population extends across more than 1,300 hectares (3,250 acres), and involves lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management, The Nature Conservancy, and Idaho Department of Fish and Game. This population has been the focus of all Spalding’s catchfly monitoring in Idaho. In 2002, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service contracted with the Idaho Conservation Data Center to develop and implement a monitoring protocol for Spalding’s catchfly and its habitat.
