Competitive Nature

ruth be told, I am a competitive person. I enjoy winning, whether it be board games, Halloween costume contests, or industry T awards. I know some of you in the nail world can be competitive as well, which is why there are so many fantastic nail competitions out there. I understand that this industry is relatively small, fostering competitiveness between most, if not all, of the nail manufacturers involved. That’s why I was overjoyed when nail icon Tammy Taylor joined me and the team at KUPA for a Facebook Live. The episode aired on NAILS’ and KUPA’s Facebook pages and discussed Taylor’s sponsorship of NAILS Next Top Nail Artist. On the air, Taylor attributed her willingness to come on KUPA’s show KUPA president Richard Hurter, to a desire to inspire nail technicians and keep them motivated. She Tammy Taylor, KUPA executive vice remembered doing nails for 14 hours a day and said that while she loved president Elaine Watson, and me. it, she could get so tired and needed excitement and motivation. “Nails IS a career!” said Taylor, who reminded the audience that in this field, a nail tech can do anything. “You can teach, you can have your own products, you can write books, you can do classes; it’s endless. There’s something for everybody,” she said. “When you think about it, this is probably the facebook.com/nailsmag only business in the world where women have no ceiling. You can go as far as you want.” @nailsmag It’s my hope that in going as far as you want, you remember to not put a cap on anyone else’s success. With salons located in close proximity @nailsmagazine to one another, it’s easy to fall into the trap of feeling competitive. Some great advice I was once given is that there’s room for everyone. I think nailsmagazine this echoes what Tammy Taylor is saying. I’m grateful that both she and KUPA could come together to promote the greater good in our industry. youtube.com/nailsmagazine I love that neither company saw themselves as a competitor of the other, and that we were able to have a conversation about the things that unite us. Yes, sometimes there is a need to compete, but it doesn’t have to eclipse the need to succeed.

CND Celebrates 40

CND has officially kicked off its 40th anniversary celebration, which is set to last a full year, from April 2019 to April 2020. Since the 40th anniversary gift is a ruby, ruby red will be in abundance for the celebration. Anniversary festivities began in December with a photo shoot featuring CND co- founder and style director Jan Arnold in a corset made by The Blonds. The one-of-a-kind corset is made from nail tips painted in a CND Shellac red and finished with red crystals. The Blonds even included a kit of back-up nail tips in case the corset needed to be touched up if a nail fell off. Stay tuned to NAILS and CND for more anniversary news, events, and releases throughout the year.

Navy Veteran Tech Returns to Nails For San Diego-based nail tech Catrena Hamer, joining the military was a longtime dream. After her then-fiancé began a military career, she realized it was time for her to follow her dream as well. She left her nail career of several years to join the Navy as an information systems technician. Still, her love for nails continued through her service: During her 14 years in the Hamer Navy, she kept her skills fresh and made sure to keep her nail license current. “Even during my service, even during my tours, I would do nails for the ladies on the ship,” she explains. After she left the Navy with a medical discharge due to disability, she was apprehensive about returning to the nail industry, but her daughters and friends encouraged her to open a salon again. “Even though I was in practice, because I had been in the military, I wasn’t as up-to-date as I wanted to be,” she says. “I was kind of afraid.” Hamer took business classes before opening a mobile salon, and is currently part of a yearlong business program for veterans. Still, keeping pace with the changes in the nail industry during her absence can be a challenge. “There’s so much new stuff out right now. I’m really trying to learn all the new techniques and everything about gels,” she says. Hamer’s goal is to one day redesign a bus or shuttle into a mobile salon. “I really want to cater to diabetics because before I joined the military, I used to do my pastor’s and he was diabetic,” says Hamer. “His doctor wanted to meet with me because he was so impressed with the way I would do my pastor’s feet.” 92615 دﺗﺮﻟﻨﺪ آراﯾﺸﮕﺮی آﻣﻮزﺷﮕﺎه آراﯾﺸﮕﺮی دﺗﺮﻟﻨﺪ deterland.com www. 12 NAILS MAGAZINE | APRIL 2019 | www.nailsmag.com freebies giveaways

Cuticles on the feet can be tougher than those on the hands. Footlogix Professional Cuticle Softener and Cuticle Conditioner products are specifically formulated for cuticles that have hard skin build-up. They hydrate the skin while removing excess debris under the nail’s free edge. Cuticle Softener: Apply a small amount directly onto the cuticle and nail fold of each toe and allow to absorb for 60 seconds. Cut the toenails and clean around the nails in the groove and under the free edge. Carefully remove all excess build-up of dead skin with pedicure implements. Shape the free edge, clean the cuticle area, and buff the nail plate. Re-apply Cuticle Softener as needed. Gently wipe off any remaining skin debris with a towel. Do not rinse the foot with water as the Cuticle Softener will continue to hydrate after the pedicure is completed. Cuticle Conditioner: Once the pedicure is completed, apply a small amount of Footlogix Cuticle Conditioner directly onto the cuticle area to hydrate and condition cuticles. Massage into cuticles in a circular motion. This alcohol- and synthetic oil-free formula will hydrate toenails and cuticles and does not leave a greasy residue.

For Carla Hatler, owner of Lacquer in Austin, Texas, starting an apprenticeship program was the ideal way to solve the salon’s issues with staffing and training. “It’s very difficult to find talented nail technicians in our area,” she explains. “We were turning away hundreds of customers a month because we were always short staffed.” She also found that recently graduated new hires weren’t taught the skills they needed to be successful in a busy salon. This gave her the idea to start the program, which provides training by in-house educators. Lacquer hires apprentices who are enrolled in nail school or have recently graduated, recruiting them through local schools, job postings, and word of mouth. They spend three months as an apprentice assisting a master nail technician and are paid an hourly rate. “Each week is planned out and coordinated with our in-salon educator,” says Hatler. “Throughout the apprentice program they have The apprentices at Lacquer spend three months assisting a workshops and quizzes to really learn the nitty-gritty master nail technician. stuff that is important to our staff and our guests.” The program has helped the salon reach staffing goals and improved the transition from school to salon. After completing the program, “They are truly prepped for handling clients and working in a busy salon,” says Hatler. She plans to continue to improve the program and share best practices with others. “I hope that we can work with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation and other state licensing boards to allow nail students more hands-on experience in real, working salons like hairstylists have,” she adds. Amber Peraino, an educator at the salon, is also focused on expanding the program. “Once we have this down to a successful science, my goal is to educate on a larger scale, introducing this program to salons all over the country,” she says. She fi gured out how to incorporate exercise and a healthy diet into her life to improve her health.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your career. I am a mom of two — a 16-month-old and a 9-year-old. I have been doing nails for about seven years now (licensed for 14). I’ve always been a booth renter and just love what I do.

What are your health challenges? After I got licensed, I ended up working retail for six-and-a-half years and was on my feet all day. I spent my fi rst pregnancy on my feet. After deciding to focus on making a career out of nails, I remember feeling so achy during the fi rst several weeks of sitting all day.

How do you fi t your health routine into your work day? Every work day is different, but I make sure to always schedule a good hour lunch break to ensure I eat right (I always pack a healthy lunch). I insist on taking a 20- to 30-minute walk. I call it my “mental health break.” Being outside and moving does wonders for my work day! I am personally terrible at going to the gym, but I make sure I wake up early and get in a quick 15- to 20-minute strength workout, or a 15- to 30-minute run on the treadmill. (Time always depends on whether my little one wakes up early).

What has been your result so far? I spent my second pregnancy doing nails and considered myself so much healthier and more fi t even now at 30 , versus 22 with my fi rst. A healthy diet helps! After those nights that I indulge after work with sugars or heavy carbs, I feel miserable and unmotivated the next day. I stick to a low carb, high fat diet, and stay away from sweets.

What’s your advice for other nail techs who want to become healthier? It’s hard to stay active with a sit-down job. Some days you just have to make yourself do it — get up and go outside, even walk around the block for fi ve or 10 minutes. At least stand up between clients and move your body. Pack a lunch or healthy snacks so you’re not tempted to go buy junk food.

While regular professional pedicures are essential, feet must be cared for in between treatments. One of the most often neglected parts of good foot maintenance and hygiene is to wash thoroughly. It may sound obvious, but many people just let the soapsuds run down in the shower and hope that it will somehow penetrate between the toe web spaces and lather the soles. In reality, feet need to be cleaned especially thoroughly, as they have many physiological characteristics that differentiate them from other areas of the body and make them a unique habitat for supporting microbes, including odor-causing bacteria. In fact, studies have shown that even pre-operative surgical scrubs are not always entirely effective at eradicating bacteria from the feet!

Step One: Exfoliation Once feet are clean, there are two essential steps for good foot care. The first is exfoliation. Removing dead skin and callus from the feet is a critical treatment step. Calluses occur from friction and are largely due to the biomechanical properties of how our feet make contact with our shoes. It’s OK to leave some callus, as aggressive removal can lead to bleeding and pain. Removal should

دﺗﺮﻟﻨﺪ آراﯾﺸﮕﺮی آﻣﻮزﺷﮕﺎه آراﯾﺸﮕﺮی دﺗﺮﻟﻨﺪ deterland.com www. 38 NAILS MAGAZINE | APRIL 2019 | www.nailsmag.com Exploring the Earthing Movement What other measures can contribute to healthy feet? Going barefoot! This is a fascinating topic and one that is definitely not in the dermatology textbooks. This concept is referred to as “grounding” or “earthing” and refers to the idea that humans evolved in direct contact with the Earth’s subtle electric charge, but today, because we tend to wear shoes and to work and live in buildings with floors etc., we have lost that sustained connection to the earth. This may sound very “new age,” but from a scientific perspective, if we think of about the fact that the earth’s surface gives off a negative charge, this grounding or earthing theory may make sense. The reason is that our bodies are composed of atoms and when these atoms lose their neutral charge they become what are called “free radicals.” You can think of free radicals as positively charged cell destroyers. They contribute to inflammation, disease, and malignancy. These positively charged free radicals can be theoretically neutralized by the negative charges that we come into contact to on the earth’s surface. In essence, walking barefoot is a natural antioxidant “treatment” of sorts. There is other evidence that physical contact with the Earth’s surface can assist in the regulation of the nervous system and keeping our circadian rhythm in check (things like hormonal levels, body temperature, digestion, and the day/night cycle). All of this of course helps to improve stress, sleep, and health in general. What is the evidence? There have been many clinical studies done in the lab that have demonstrated beneficial physical changes when participants are grounded. These studies however, are not done outside in nature and tend to be small and there is little research to date on the effects of grounding in nature and whether it results in the same positive effects. The best way to “ground” or “earth” is simply to allow your skin to be in contact with any natural conductors of the earth’s electricity. It doesn’t have to be your feet, although walking on grass, soil, sand, or gravel would No Lift Nails Cuticle Oil brings be an easy way to accomplish this. Passive services can be an upgrade to an active service or a standalone service. These are some examples:

LED light therapy for hands: This therapy is an anti-aging treatment and the services are sold as a series. The client is encouraged to come into the salon between manicures to sit for a 15-minute treatment, as well as adding a treatment before or after her regular manicure. I recommend the Hand Spa by Revitalight (www.revitalight.com) because clients must come into the salon to use it and a professional isn’t needed to set things up or monitor the client. LED light treatments can be offered as a standalone These treatments have been proven to work service or an addition to a nail service. for the skin on any area of the body, but must be performed often and with home care to be effective. A client can purchase several weeks of treatments, along with sunscreen. Sunscreen must be used during and after the treatment period or it will not be effective.

LED light therapy for feet: This treatment is basically the same as for hands, but a different light that’s specially designed for the feet is used.

Hydrotherapy chair or bed: This equipment can be used as a passive massage treatment or to calm the nerves of clients when the technician is running late. It is often included in packages as “passive The HydroMassage bed can massage,” and is sold by the minute as a standalone generate extra income, especially in treatment, usually at $1-$2 per minute. Clients do salons that don’t offer massage. not have to undress to use the bed or chair and those who love it will schedule it as a standalone treatment or before or after a manicure or pedicure. Many will just drop in, saying, “I need a massage!” and get on the bed or into the chair. The stress- relief quotient of this equipment is huge. You can learn more at www.hydromassage.com.

Salt room: A separate room can be set up as a salt therapy room where the client can come in with or without an appointment. The rooms usually have multiple lounge chairs. Breathing in the salt air promotes better breathing, healthier skin, sounder sleep, improved physical fitness and endurance, and overall wellness. Salt therapy salons are being set up around the country and are doing well.

Passive services require marketing. Fortunately, the equipment manufacturers usually provide training on how to promote the services. Headley-Blythe, who is based in Milton Keynes, England, shared her dilemma with a dance instructor friend, who suggested she train to become a Zumba instructor. “I jumped at the opportunity, although I was slightly apprehensive,” she says. “I am quite reserved and would have to jump around and shout at women!” Despite her worries, the job turned out to be a good fit. “I have always loved dancing, though I was not professionally trained,” she says. “I loved the music that Zumba brought to the class. That’s what got me going — the world music and routines.” After being trained in the routines and how to run a class, taking charge for the first time was nerve-wracking. “My legs wobbled and I was very nervous to start with,” says Headley- Blythe. Now, after eight years of experience as an instructor, she teaches three classes a week at various locations in her area, focusing on Zumba in the mornings and on occasional evenings, and working as a mobile nail technician during the day and on weekends. “I keep it part-time and simple,” she explains. “I don’t want to work in a salon or in a busy environment anymore. Now I I loved the music that Zumba like to take my time.” She appreciates the ability brought to the class.” to make her own schedule. “I don’t do more than I can handle,” she says. “Being self-employed you control everything, including your time and work schedule around the family.”
