  • American Halloween: Enculturation, Myths and Consumer Culture
American Halloween: Enculturation, Myths and Consumer Culture Shabnam Yousaf Quaid I Azam University Islamabad, Pakistan Abstract The cultish festival of Halloween is encultured through mythology and has become a hybrid consumer culture in the American society. Historiographical evidences illustrate that how it was being Christianized in the 9th century CE and transformed a Pagan Northern-European religious tradition from its adaptation to the enculturation process by the early church, to remember the dead in tricking and treating manners. This paper will illuminate the intricate medieval history of Celtic origins of Halloween, etymology of Samhain festival, rites of passages and the religious rituals practicing in America regarding Halloween that how it evolved from paganism to Neo-paganism and hybridized through materialist glorification from mythology to consumer culture. The mid of 19th century witnessed the arrival of Samhain rituals in America with the displacement of Irish population. Presently, this festival is infused with the folk traditions and carnivals. The trajectory penetrates its roots from discourse to practical implications, incorporated in American culture and became materialized. To assess and analyze the concoction of mythology, enculturation into culturally materialized form and developed into a consumer culture, This paper will take the assistance from Marvin Harris ‘Cultural Materialism’, to seek the behavioral and mental superstructure of the American social fabric for operationalizing the connections and to determine the way forward to explore the rhetorical fabricated glorification of consumer culture inculcated through late-capitalism, will be assessed by Theodore Adorno’s theoretical grounds of ‘The Culture Industry’. This article will re-orientate and enlighten the facts and evolving processes practicing in the American society and inquire that how the centuries old mythologies are being encultured and amalgamated with the socio-cultural, religious and economic interests.

  • South Asia Thomas F
13 South Asia Thomas F. Lynch III In late 2016, the United States has four major national security interests in South Asia. Three of these are vital security interests with more than a decade of pedigree. They will require new administration policies and strategy to prevent actions that could gravely damage U.S. security: a major conventional war between India and Pakistan, the return of global terrorist safe havens in the region, or the proliferation of nuclear weapons or materials into the hands of America’s enemies. The challenge will be “to keep a lid” on the potential for a major terrorist strike of the U.S. homeland emanating from South Asia or from a major interstate war that could risk nuclear fallout, involvement of China, the loss of nuclear material to terrorists, or a combination of all three. A fourth objective is relatively new, but rising in importance. It requires the new administration to pursue a flexible strategy and proactive but patient security initiatives that enable the responsible rise of an emerging American security partner, India, in a manner that supports U.S. security objectives across the Indo-Pacific region without unintentionally aggravating the Indo-Pakistan security dilemma or unnecessarily stoking Chinese fears of provocative encirclement. outh Asia will not be a glamour portfolio for the incoming U.S. ad- Sministration’s security team in January 2017, but it will be one of top- five importance. Critical U.S. national security interests are at stake that can be compromised gravely should the South Asia security portfolio be misappreciated or improperly managed.

  • Mohsin Hamid's “The Reluctant Fundamentalist”
    29. Identity at Stake: Mohsin Hamid’s “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” Humaira Tariq, Center for Undergraduate Studies, University of the Punjab Lahore, Pakistan [email protected] ABSTRACT Pakistan, being an unfortunate land, due to destructive wars and incompetent leadership is witness to the constant efflux of its privileged people into lands promising better opportunities. Although the overseas may seem very attractive and promising for those who aspire, the ground realities are not always very pleasant. Mohsin Hamid’s “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” is a text that explores the world and thinking of a Pakistani immigrant living in America. Among many immigrant issues that the book highlights, one particular issue is of paramount importance and is the topic of heated debate in the intellectual circles. That issue is identity crisis. The identity attained and maintained by the immigrant in his homeland is found to create problems for him in a new environment where the culture, traditions and life style is altogether different. This issue is all the more poignant for Muslim immigrants who immigrate to non-Muslim countries as their Islamic code of life clashes with the secular and more liberal ideas of the west. Keeping in view 9/11 as a major catalyst, I have endeavored to analyze and discuss the factors and reasons that contribute to the protagonist’s identity crisis in Hamid’s work. Bringing together Erik Erikson’s theory of identity crisis and the works of other eminent scholars on the subject, this paper aims to propose a better understanding of the issue with special emphasis on Muslim immigrants.
