GOVERNOR APPOINTMENTS Candidate Pack Hampton School Governor Recruitment Candidate Pack – October 2020 Executive Summary Hampton School is one of the country’s leading, most successful and best-resourced independent schools, and has been helping boys to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations for over 460 years. The School is part of the Hampton School Trust (the Trust), which also includes Hampton Pre- Prep and Prep School. The Senior School has a long tradition as a boys’ school; the Pre-Prep and Prep School welcomes boys in the Prep and both boys and girls in the Pre-Prep. The Schools each offer a lively, friendly and caring community, where innovative teaching is underpinned by strong shared values and complemented by outstanding pastoral care. Hampton aspires to enable its pupils not only to make sense of the world but also to want to go out and improve it. Pupils are expected to aspire to personal best while supporting those around them with kindness. The Trust is seeking to recruit up to six Governors for appointment over the next 12 months (depending on candidates’ availability), to complement the Board’s existing experience and skills base, and to facilitate the retirement of some Governors due to step down in 2022. Governors are Trustees of the charity and contribute to the strategic leadership of the Trust; they provide support, advice and an appropriate level of oversight of The Headmaster and the Senior Leadership Team. The successful applicants will be expected to demonstrate an interest in education, as well as substantial knowledge and experience of executive and/or non-executive management in the private, public, or not-for-profit sectors. Hampton welcomes applications from candidates from a wide range of backgrounds, however there is a particular need for individuals with expertise in business leadership, strategic finance and accounting, law, human resources, public relations/marketing and communications. The Trust is committed to achieving greater diversity among its Governors and welcomes applications regardless of sex, gender, race, age, sexuality, belief or disability. Applicants with a disability should contact Society, Hampton’s executive search partners, in confidence to discuss whether any adjustments or support are required during the recruitment process, or the steps that can be taken to overcome operational difficulties presented by the role. Applications should consist of a CV accompanied by a covering letter addressing the criteria in the Person Specification set out below on page 6 and motivations for wanting to join the Hampton School Trust. To upload these documents via Society’s website, click here. The deadline for receipt of applications is midday on Friday, 11 December 2020. Page | 1 The Hampton School Trust The Trust consists of Hampton School and the associated Hampton Pre-Prep and Prep Schools on three sites in Hampton (close to Bushy Park and the River Thames). Hampton School is fortunate to have over 27 acres of playing fields within its spacious grounds. Facilities include a state-of-the-art 3G sportsground, a large Sports Hall and The Hammond Theatre, along with an excellent library and specialist facilities for Art, Music, Science, Technology, IT and Languages. In addition, the School has recently opened a new Sixth Form Study and Careers Centre. The Millennium Boat House, shared with Hampton’s neighbouring girls’ school, Lady Eleanor Holles (LEH), enjoys a prime location on the nearby River Thames and provides the focal point for its nationally renowned Boat Club. Hampton School has undergone many transformations since its foundation in 1556-7 and, while always remaining in the Hampton area, has occupied several different sites. It moved to its current location in Hanworth Road in 1939. A state Grammar School 1910 to 1975, Hampton reverted to independent status on the latter date. The School is recognised as one of the leading schools in the UK with around 1,340 boys attending the Senior School. The Hampton Pre-Prep and Prep School became part of the Trust in 1999 and educates around 225 pupils. Hampton’s examination results and university entrance record consistently rank among the best achieved anywhere, while an extensive range of co-curricular activities provides each boy with the opportunity to shine and the means to explore new interests. Nearly all Hampton leavers go on to undergraduate courses at Russell Group or equivalent universities. Between 20 and 30 Hamptonians are offered places at Oxford and Cambridge annually and 43 young men among the Class of 2020 have moved on to global top-10 universities; an increasing number go on to study at US Ivy League universities, often on academic and/or sporting scholarships. Hampton’s alumni network is extremely strong and former pupils remain passionate about and interested in their School, largely due to the exceptionally warm and mutually respectful relationships enjoyed between staff and pupils. Visitors from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) concluded that Hampton’s academic and all- round excellence merited the rarely awarded ISI assessment of pupils’ achievements and learning being ‘Exceptional’. The inspection team’s findings in all other areas were similarly pleasing and the highest possible judgements were achieved across the board. The Schools were inspected in March 2019 by the ISA against the standards in the schedule to the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014 and found to be fully compliant. Copies of these ISI reports can be found on the School website linked here. Page | 2 Values and Ethos of the Trust Hampton pupils are intelligent, friendly and unpretentious. The School is a community where success is based upon achievement rather than the pursuit of narrowly-defined targets. We welcome academically-minded pupils from both maintained and independent schools, irrespective of ethnic group and background, and of their religious or non-religious beliefs. While the Senior School has a long history as a boys’ school which continues to this day, Hampton Pre-Prep and Prep School educates both boys and girls. Hampton aims to attract and educate: • Boys and girls of academic and all-round ambition from a wide range of schools to provide them with: • a challenging and stimulating education • a friendly and supportive environment to develop in its pupils: • the desire to achieve their full academic potential • a participative but critical approach to learning • a helpful and committed attitude to their School and the community • respect for self and others • involvement in co-curricular activities • skills for life at university and beyond to achieve these aims through: • a broad and balanced curriculum • an established system of pastoral care • a co-operative and collaborative relationship with the community • an extensive range of co-curricular activities • the recruitment and development of excellent teaching and support staff • the development and maintenance of our site and its facilities Page | 3 The Fitzwygram Foundation Hampton has a long-established and cherished tradition of providing free places to families which could not otherwise afford a Hampton education. The Trust’s Governors, The Headmaster, teachers and staff are all whole-heartedly committed to ensuring that Hampton remains an inclusive, leading independent day school with a strong ethos of social responsibility. The School is determined to welcome many more pupils who would thrive at Hampton and beyond but who could only attend if given a completely free place. In 2019-20, Hampton School provided over 61 Free Places, while providing financial help to another 32 boys’ families. It aspires to do a great deal more, but Hampton has no historic financial endowment and this limits the number of pupils it can currently support. The Fitzwygram Foundation was established in March 2016 as a separate charity with one simple but transformative aim: to increase the number of Free Places available at Hampton School. In 2018, two Fitzwygram Scholars joined Hampton, three more in 2019 and a further four in joined 2020. For more information on the Fitzwygram Foundation, please click here. Page | 4 Community Partnerships Hampton is committed to playing a full and active role within the local community as it recognises that cross-sector collaborations can provide better educational opportunities and outcomes for everyone. Meaningful and mutually beneficial partnerships with community organisations, charities, and schools are fundamental to Hampton’s community of pupils and staff. For sixteen years, Hampton and LEH have built up a highly successful Independent/State School Partnership with five local maintained schools – Hampton High, Tolworth Girls’ School, Orleans Park School, Teddington School, and The Hollyfield School. Together, they have built up a lively and varied programme of educational and co-curricular opportunities enabling pupils and teachers across the partnerships to work collaboratively and to draw upon the strengths of each school. Hampton has continued to broaden its school partnerships. Despite several partnership activities being postponed in the 2019-2020 academic year, Hampton continued to deepen its partnerships programme. It worked with 10 local maintained secondary schools and more than 40 different state primary schools on a varied and lively range of educational and co-curricular activities for over 1,900 pupils. More about Hampton’s community partnerships can be found here. Page | 5 Role Description
