Wednesday, September 14, 2011, at 7 p.m. George Wall—Alamos and Beyond Our scheduled program was to be on Gardening for Birds by Kendall Kroe- sen of Tucson Audubon; however, due to conflicts with his schedule, he had to cancel and we rescheduled him for February of next year. As a re- sult, I’m presenting a program that I had ready for just such a cancellation. I’ve made four trips down to Alamos, Mexico, over the years and all of them were excellent. This program covers all four trips that started in 2001 and ended with the last one in 2010. 27 of our members or past members attended at least one of these trips. About Alamos—Diego de Guzman, a Spanish explorer, came through the location where Alamos was eventually to be settled in 1533.     Copper Canyon In Mexico (Barrancas Del Cobre) Copper Canyon at Chihuahua, Mexico Copper Canyon is a system of canyons in northern Mexico, which were formed from six rivers that eventually all flow into the Rio Fuerte, a big river that meets the Sea of Cortez. The six canyons in Copper Canyon, when combined, are larger than the Grand Canyon. The Copper Canyon was named for the coppery colored rock from which the canyons are carved. Aside from the canyons, there are hot springs and a wide variety of wildflowers which decorate the Copper Canyon after the rains. Hiking, biking, and driving are popular ways to get around Copper Canyon to experience all it has to offer. In addition a railway line, the Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacifica (El Chepe for short), is a popular way to view the canyon, as it runs alongside one of the large canyons, Canyon Urique, offering great views along the way. The canyon houses several hot springs: the popular ones are the Recohuata (Recowata). The hot springs located near Creel have been canalized into a number of concrete pools. The rustic feel of these springs fuses properly with the natural beauty of the area. Visitors to Copper Canyon may also be able to see some people of the Raramuri (or Tarahumara) tribe of native Americans, who are famous for their incredible endurance when running. As a result of the increasing population, the ecosystems of the Sierra Tarahumara Occidental region are facing danger. The facilities to increase tourism are becoming a cause of the threats to the place.

Campostoma ornatum is a freshwater fish endemic to montane and semiarid regions in northwest Mexico and southern Arizona. Its wide range of distribution and the previously observed morphological differentiation between populations in different watersheds make this species a useful model to investigate the biogeographic role of the Sierra Madre Occidental and to disentangle the actions of Pliocene tecto-volcanic processes vs Quaternary climatic change. Our phylogeographic study was based on DNA sequences from one mitochondrial gene (cytb, 1110 bp, n = 285) and two nuclear gene regions (S7 and RAG1, 1822 bp in total, n = 56 and 43, respectively) obtained from 18 to 29 localities, in addition to a morphological survey covering the entire distribution area. Such a dataset allowed us to assess whether any of the populations/lineages sampled deserve to be categorised as an evolutionarily significant unit. Results: We found two morphologically and genetically well-differentiated groups within C. ornatum. One is located in the northern river drainages (Yaqui, Mayo, Fuerte, Sonora, Casas Grandes, Santa Clara and Conchos) and another one is found in the southern drainages (Nazas, Aguanaval and Piaxtla).

QUERCUS, WHITE OAKS), A NEW SPECIES FROM NORTHWESTERN MEXICO RICHARD SPELLENBERG Dept. of Biology, MSC 3AF New Mexico State University Las Cruces, New Mexico 88003-0001 ABSTRACT Quercus barrancana Spellenb., sp. nov. , a white oak (sect. Quercus ), is described from southwestern Chihuahua and southeastern Sonora in northwestern Mexico. It is a small-leaved evergreen oak primarily of the barranca (canyon) country on the west slope of the Sierra Madre Occidental. The new species differs from the more northern Q. toumeyi Sarg. by having most leaves on the tree usually toothed on their margins and the adaxial surfaces bearing spirally contorted multirayed hairs. It is a small tree or shrub, finding some use as firewood. The acorns are eaten by indigenous people. From the start of our explorations of the flora of the northern Sierra Madre Occidental in the early 1980s, we have been aware of a well-defined southern population of a white oak (sect. Quercus ) usually identified as Quercus toumeyi Sarg., occasionally as Q. arizonica Sarg., or as annotated by J. Tucker on a few large-leaved specimens at DAV, as an intergrade between the two species. In a review of oaks of the region (Spellenberg 2001a) this oak was included within Q. toumeyi , with distinctions briefly explained for this southern population. Since that time it was necessary to return specimens borrowed from other herbaria; these were annotated as “ Q.
