Copper Canyon in Mexico (Barrancas Del Cobre) Copper Canyon In Mexico (Barrancas Del Cobre) Copper Canyon at Chihuahua, Mexico Copper Canyon is a system of canyons in northern Mexico, which were formed from six rivers that eventually all flow into the Rio Fuerte, a big river that meets the Sea of Cortez. The six canyons in Copper Canyon, when combined, are larger than the Grand Canyon. The Copper Canyon was named for the coppery colored rock from which the canyons are carved. Aside from the canyons, there are hot springs and a wide variety of wildflowers which decorate the Copper Canyon after the rains. Hiking, biking, and driving are popular ways to get around Copper Canyon to experience all it has to offer. In addition a railway line, the Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacifica (El Chepe for short), is a popular way to view the canyon, as it runs alongside one of the large canyons, Canyon Urique, offering great views along the way. The canyon houses several hot springs: the popular ones are the Recohuata (Recowata). The hot springs located near Creel have been canalized into a number of concrete pools. The rustic feel of these springs fuses properly with the natural beauty of the area. Visitors to Copper Canyon may also be able to see some people of the Raramuri (or Tarahumara) tribe of native Americans, who are famous for their incredible endurance when running. As a result of the increasing population, the ecosystems of the Sierra Tarahumara Occidental region are facing danger. The facilities to increase tourism are becoming a cause of the threats to the place. The construction of roads, cutting of trees for the manufacture of charcoal and over harvesting are some other reasons that provoke a feeling of concern towards this place. Although the government is taking measures for the conservation of the natural environment of the Copper Canyon, yet the speed is slow. Visitors are advised to use eco-friendly ways to get around the canyon. Copper Canyon is one of the natural inheritances bestowed to human beings. Thus, we owe special responsibility to this place. Visitors to Copper Canyon may also be able to see some people of the Raramuri (or Tarahumara) tribe of native Americans, who are famous for their incredible endurance when running. Facts about Copper Canyon In Mexico (Barrancas Del Cobre) The Spanish reached the Copper Canyon during the 17th century and met the aboriginal locals throughout Chihuahua. t was getting dark. The man fixed his harsh I gaze on me and in a rough voice, said bluntly, 'You're not bothering anybody, friend. You're travelers, you need help and we're giving it to you. We know what it's like to be away from yourfam ily with nobody to even give you a cup of coffee. So stop saying you're a bother. And don't offer us money. If you want to pay us, do the same thing for someone else." And ali together, the residents of the little hamlet got moving to make us some thing to eat and even emptied an entire house so we could sleep in it. I had originally only gone up to the house to ask permission to put up our tents. Further along, a day's walk away, was the Sinfo rosa Canyon. Deep, broad and, above ali, unknown. We were in southern Chihuahua and wanted to cross ali the canyons in the Tarahumara Mountains in a single trip. I had had my first encounter with one, like most of us, in the Copper Canyon, next to the railing at El Divisadero. The first thing that attracted me was the canyon itself, that deep gash in the earth where we discover that the paths clown are filled withloose rocks and it takes hours to des cend to the river. That was, in the end, the goal. Down at the bottom, nothing could be seen but the river and the mountains towering above. After a starry night or a full moon, in the morning, the air laden with smell of greenery and your ears filled with the incessant song of cicadas, you discovered that the river was really only half the journey and you still had to climb up again.

The “El Chepe” railroad crosses through the states of Sinaloa and Chihuahua and offers tourists breathtaking views of the canyon. This natural attraction is comprised of 23 square miles of mountains with legendary cliffs, waterfalls that reach heights of 1,500 feet, and expansive areas of pine and oak forests. Words cannot describe the views of the mountains and natural landscapes that exist in the canyon. In this incredible setting you can enjoy a variety of ecotourism activities, such as rock climbing, rappelling, mountain biking, horseback riding, and bird watching. The canyons are also home to the Raramuri or Tarahumara, an indigenous group whose culture dates back millennia and who still manage to retain their ancient customs and beliefs. Some of the most traditional Tarahumara communities live in Batopilas Canyon, which is known for its wealth of minerals. At 6,165 feet, Urique Canyon is considered to be the deepest canyon in Mexico. Also worth noting is Sinforosa Canyon with a depth of just over 6,000 feet, where you’ll find the Rosalinda and San Ignacio waterfalls and rock paintings that date back to the eighteenth century. Finally, Candamena Canyon is home to two of the tallest waterfalls in Mexico, Piedra Volada and Basaseachi. 1 TARAHUMARA CULTURE The mountains have been home to many indigenous cultures.

The canyon complex known as the “Barranca del Cobre,” or Copper Canyon, is four times larger than Arizona’s Grand Canyon and almost 300 feet deeper. This is the homeland of the Tarahumara Indians, who in spite of encroaching civilization, have managed to preserve their ancient traditional lifestyle, living in caves and simple shelters while practicing subsistence farming. They are considered to be the world’s greatest long-distance runners, racing up and down the vast area of canyons for transportation and sport. The Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad, which traverses the area, took nearly one hundred years to build. It passes through 86 tunnels and crosses 37 bridges as it climbs almost 8000 feet into the rugged Sierra Madres. It has been called one of the most spectacular train rides in the Western Hemisphere. Since 1983, we have been operating the very best trips through Copper Canyon.
