In the legislature Justice Minister Kaycee Madu met with the Métis Settlements General Council in the legislature ​ ​ ​ ​ on Tuesday to discuss policing as part of the government’s ongoing review. Next spring’s budget will include cuts, finance minister teases Finance Minister Travis Toews warned “tough decisions” are ahead as he invited public ​ ​ feedback ahead of budget 2021. To reduce spending, the finance minister said he is looking at creating “efficiencies” in the public sector. “It’s clear the status quo is not sustainable, but this is also a great opportunity to reset our course, not only for the next fiscal plan, but for future generations of Albertans,” Toews told reporters. “There will be tough decisions in the short term so we can sustain services into the future.” While the UCP ran on a promise of balanced budgets, the pandemic — and ensuing oil price collapse and economic challenges — has thrown those plans for a loop. “The four-year fiscal plan we introduced with Budget 2019 was working,” Toews said. “Since that time, Alberta has been hit by a very serious triple black swan event.” The deficit is on track to hit a record high of $24.2 billion in 2020-21, with debt forecast to hit $99.6 billion by March 31, 2021.

    Guide to Alberta’s Governing Party The Governing Party Cabinet BACKGROUND The Cabinet, also known as the Executive Council, is made up of the Premier and Cabinet Ministers. As head of the Executive Council, the Premier selects Cabinet Ministers from MLAs of the governing party to lead a Ministry. As such, citizens do not elect their Cabinet Ministers in direct elections. However, Cabinet Ministers are elected representatives of the Legislative Assembly and play an important role in our system of governance. (From CCVO’s Election Toolkit in the Chapter 4: Navigating the Alberta Government). On the following page is a list of those in the current Governing Party Cabinet, following the 2019 Alberta provincial election. Please take note of Ministries that are important to your organization’s mission and mandate. There are 21 Ministries and 2 Parliamentary Secretaries in total. Please find more information, including bios and priorities for each minister here. In addition to these important appointments listed on the following page, the government also announced deputy ministers. Deputy ministers are crucial contacts in ministries, as they are responsible for day-to-day operations and can be very valuable allies. Find a full list and bios of deputy ministers here. By Shane Mackenzie & Jesse Robichaud Three years on from 2015 – campaign strategists are turning their attention to the 2019 federal election. For Prime Minister Trudeau’s incumbent Liberals, the strategic path to re-election will look different than the party’s vault from third place to a resounding pan-Canadian victory last time. The Way Things Were The promise of hope and renewed confidence in government was palpable when voters turned out en masse to elect MPs from Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party. The mere idea that “better is always possible!” gained traction with an electorate whose expectations had been steadily managed downward by the Harper government’s “no nonsense” decade at the helm. A previously struggling Liberal voter base came to life when the party’s candidates and their leader framed their platform of “real change” promises as a return to openness, evidence-based policy, climate action, large-scale investment, reconciliation, equality, support for families, and diversity. The Way Things Are No good deed goes unpunished, and for Trudeau there will undoubtedly be a political price to pay for raising the bar for what voters should expect from their government. Indeed, the success standard set for Trudeau is higher than in some past elections. And he set it himself. Once the bar has been raised, it’s impossible to lower it again – and it’s also harder to clear it consistently, as we have seen with issues like electoral reform, climate policy, pipelines, and relations with provincial governments.
