Tour 1: Ayutthaya and Bang Pa in the Early Morning, Pick-Up at Your Hotel Tour 1: Ayutthaya and Bang Pa In the early morning, pick-up at your hotel in Bangkok and transfer to River City. From here you will travel by coach to Ayutthaya, the former Thai capital for over 400 years. Witness the glory of the ancient capital through its temple and palace ruins. First you will visit Bang Pa In. The palace showcases an eclectic collection of buildings that blend European, Khmer, Thai and Chinese architectural styles. It’s the favorite summer palace of the King. Afterwards you will visit some amazing temple ruins at Ayutthaya. Wat Maha That is over 600 years old and its pagoda once contained a holy relic of Buddha. At Wat Na Phra Mane you will see a green stone Buddha statue which is more than 1000 years old. You will also visit one of the largest reclining Buddha images at Wat Lokayasutharam. Then it’s time to board the boat. Cruise back to Bangkok via the mighty Chao Praya River. A Thai buffet lunch will be served onboard. Today you will discover one of the authentic Floating Markets: Damnuern Saduak in Ratchaburi. Close to the market you will board a fast long tail boat, which will bring you through the narrow klongs to the market. You will enjoy watching the farmers selling fruit and many kinds of local products in their boats. If you want you can take one of the paddle boats to cruise through the market (optional).After this great experience you will continue your trip to another famous market: the Maeklong train market. People are always busy with buying and selling their products at the market. Then a piercing siren sounds and in a flash the market transforms – the shoppers disappear and the stallholders whip away their produce. The market comes to a standstill as all the vendors hold on to the poles supporting their awnings to make way for the train to pass. It is such a tight squeeze that the train travelling at about almost 15 mph / 24 km/h. touches the fruits and everything else at the marketplace as it passes through. After lunch it’s time to discover the real Thai life by boat. We will board our long tail boat and cruise though the canals, or ‘klongs’, for about 1 hour. Next, we weave through the maze of small, vibrant and bustling streets in Bangkok’s Chinatown to witness the diverse cultures that make up this densely-populated part of the capital. From Chinatown, we continue towards the river to get some cool air and absorb the sights and smells of the flower & vegetable markets. We then cross the mighty Chao Phraya river by ferry and dock at one of the most beautiful temples of Bangkok, Wat Arun. We continue our journey by exploring the historic Thonburi side of the river and make a stop at the picturesque Princess Mother Memorial Park. The park which has many beautiful flower gardens and the occasional exhibition for you to enjoy during a short leisurely break. Before we start backtracking to the starting point we encounter yet another dimension to the diverse tour. Data was collected by document research, observation, interview and focus group discussion. Results show that temples suffer from a lack of maintenance, poor service, inadequate tourist facilities, minimal community participation and inefficient public relations. A management model to combat these problems was designed by parties from each temple at a workshop. The model provides an eight-part strategy to increase the tourism potential of temples in Bangkok: temple site, safety, conveniences, attractions, services, public relations, cultural tourism and management. THESIS ADVISOR: DONALD ELLSMORE, DPhilFAPT. 180 pp. In this dissertation, the impact of religious tourism development on the cultural heritage of sacred Buddhist places is explored through an examination of nine temples in Ang Thong and their communities. The research considers strategies that might permit religious tourism development while conserving the cultural heritage significance of the places. A review of the evolution of tourism development and evaluation of tourism impacts by assessing and studying nine sacred temples’ cultural heritage was undertaken to develop a practicable approach to promoting and managing tourism sustainably. The research reveals that the development and promotion of the nine temples in Ang Thong occurs in two important stages. The first is the emergence of royal monasteries and common temples that reflect the relationship between the religion and society.
