Low Male Voice Repertoire in Contemporary Musical Theatre: a Studio and Performance Guide of Selected Songs 1996-2020
LOW MALE VOICE REPERTOIRE IN CONTEMPORARY MUSICAL THEATRE: A STUDIO AND PERFORMANCE GUIDE OF SELECTED SONGS 1996-2020 by Jeremy C. Gussin Submitted to the faculty of the Jacobs School of Music in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree, Doctor of Music Indiana University December 2020 Accepted by the faculty of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Music Doctoral Committee __________________________________________ Ray Fellman, Research Director __________________________________________ Brian Gill, Chair __________________________________________ Jane Dutton __________________________________________ Peter Volpe December 10, 2020 ii Copyright © 2020 Jeremy Gussin iii Preface This project is intended to be a resource document for bass voices and teachers of low male voices at all levels. For the purposes of this document, I will make use of the established term low male voice (LMV) while acknowledging that there is a push for the removal of gender from voice classification in the industry out of respect for our trans, non-binary and gender fluid populations. In addition to analysis and summation of musical concepts and content found within each selection, each repertoire selection will include discussions of style, vocal technique, vocalism, and character in an effort to establish routes towards authenticity in the field of musical theatre over the last twenty five years. The explosion of online streaming and online sheet music resources over the last decade enable analysis involving original cast recordings, specific noteworthy performances, and discussions on transposition as it relates to the honoring of character and capability of an individual singer. My experiences with challenges as a young low voice (waiting for upper notes to develop, struggling with resonance strategies above a D♭4) with significant musicianship prowess left me searching for a musically challenging outlet outside of the Bel Canto aesthetic. -
Stage Kiss” by Sarah Ruhl Directed by Jeffrey Bracco January 16-February 16 Supported by Producers Sandra Moll & Rick Holden Synopsis
Next on our stage: CODED THE LITTLE FOXES OUR TBA MUSICAL! MARCH 12-APRIL 11 MAY 14-JUNE 14 JULY 16-AUGUST 23 HIGHLIGHTS A companion guide to “Stage Kiss” by Sarah Ruhl directed by Jeffrey Bracco January 16-February 16 supported by Producers Sandra Moll & Rick Holden Synopsis What happens when life and art get too cozy? Part backstage comedy and part offbeat love story, Stage Kiss follows two actors with a history. After they’re cast opposite each other again, the lines start to blur. “When I kissed you just now, did it feel like an actor kissing an actor or a person kissing a person?” the leading lady asks. Either way, the show must go on — consequences be damned. Characters Nearly everyone plays more than one role in Stage Kiss, which (as one would expect from a comedy-love story about the theater) contains a play within a play. She (April Green): An actress in her mid-40s. Plays the role of Ada Wilcox opposite He, her former lover. He (Asher Krohn): An actor in his mid-40s. Plays the role of Johnny Lowell opposite She. In Act Two, after the play closes, they take on altogether different roles, in more ways than one. The Director (Tom Gough): A director Adrian Schwalbach, who helms the play in Act One and then heads to a new artistic project. In Detroit. Kevin (Matthew Regan): The reader and awkward understudy. Also plays the doctor, the butler and the pimp. The Husband (Damian Vega): The husband, or Harrison. Is he clueless, long- suffering or smarter than you think? Angela / Maid / Millie (Alexandra Velazquez): Millie and the maid in Act One; Angela in Act Two. -

Drawing on an impressive variety of ethnic folk styles, this award-winning duo plays everything from lively Irish jigs and down-home American reels to hard-driving Klezmer freilachs and haunting Gypsy melodies, spicing the mix with the distinctive rhythms of Balkan dance music, the lush sounds of Scandinavian twin fiddling, and original compositions written in a traditional style. Combining tradition with innovation, Simple Gifts creates some of the finest arrangements in folk music today: swing fiddle creeps into a Romanian dance, spoons show up in an Irish reel, and a traditional West Virginia tune is enhanced by a Turkish drum and Indian shruti box. Based in the hills of central Pennsylvania, these women play an amazing array of instruments. Linda Littleton and Karen Hirshon switch with ease among fiddle, mandolin, banjo, recorders, bowed psaltery, hammered dulcimer, baritone fiddle, guitar, and percussion. Simple Gifts is well-known for their outgoing stage presence, which is warm, personal, and accented with humor. These women deliver their music with rare intensity and contagious enthusiasm. It’s obvious that Simple Gifts loves the music they play and knows how to share their excitement with the audience. -
Kiss Me, My Fair Carousel Woman: Now Is the Season of Our Discontent

(Photo by Matthew Murphy) EQUITY, DIVERSITY, AND INCLUSION | APRIL 6, 2018 | 10 COMMENTS Kiss Me, My Fair Carousel Woman: Now Is the Season of Our Discontent Is this really the right time for a spate of male-authored, male-directed musicals about subservient women to come to Broadway? https://www.americantheatre.org/2018/04/06/kiss-me-my-fair-carousel-woman-now-is-the-season-of-our-discontent/ 1/7 5/9/2018 AMERICAN THEATRE | Kiss Me, My Fair Carousel Woman: Now Is the Season of Our Discontent BY DIEP TRAN Last November, composer Georgia Stitt tweeted out the following: Georgia Stitt @georgiastitt With respect to the creatives who will be employed by these projects, I will say I'm concerned about a Broadway season that includes PRETTY WOMAN, CAROUSEL and MY FAIR LADY all at the same time. In 2017 is the correct message really "women are there to be rescued"? 10:03 AM - Nov 22, 2017 778 236 people are talking about this That tweet got 180 retweets and 755 likes. It seems many were in agreement about the optics: In a #MeToo world, where women are still severely underrepresented on the creative teams of Broadway shows—and really, on teams all across the American theatre—is now really the time to put up these socially regressive works, written by men, in 2018? (A revival of Kiss Me, Kate is slated for 2019.) Indeed, it’s a trend so problematic that it merited a New York Times piece about how directors, producers, and actors are hoping to overcome or mitigate the misogyny and retrograde gender relations in those works. -
