Teaching English at Aoyama University

Aoyama University: We have two campuses. Most people are familiar with our campus in Shibuya, but there is a newer campus where Science and Engineering students are taught in addition to first and second year students in the Departments of Literature, Economics, Law, International Politics, Economics & Business, and Business Administration. Almost all of the part-time work available in the English Department is at the Sagamihara Campus. There are a few English language part-time teaching positions at Night School in Shibuya, but these go to teachers who have taught in the I.E. Program at Sagamihara, and have a track record with us, including student evaluations from past terms.

The Sagamihara Campus: Our new campus is a large, modern facility for teaching the arts and sciences with a media center combining the library, computer and listening labs, labs for the physical sciences, a chapel, and sports grounds. The campus is 10-minute walk from on the JR , two stations north of on the Odakyu Line. The commute from Shinjuku takes about 1 hour, not including the walk from the station. For greater comfort, and to cut the travel time slightly, some part-time teachers take the "Romance Car," an express train from Shinjuku to Machida.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, English classes begin in the first period. This period starts at 9:00 AM. The fifth and final class of the day finishes at 6:10 PM.

The English Language Program: The bulk of the classes taught at Sagamihara are in the Integrated English Program, which integrates the teaching of speaking, listening, reading, and writing into a theme-based curriculum. We use dialogue journals, graded readers, media summaries, and teach small group discussion. There are about 650 students in this two-year program. Assessed by a placement test, students are streamed into classes of different ability levels. Class size is about 25 students and separate classes are taught in listening, writing, and in a double-period class where all four skills are taught. We have articulated curriculum guides for the courses and there is a high degree of teacher collaboration in the program, including an annual orientation, and semi-monthly meetings at lunchtime at the Sagamihara Campus.

An overview of the IE Program as well as campus and transportation maps can be found at… http://www.cl.aoyama.ac.jp/english/ie/

Further information about Aoyama Gakuin University may be viewed at www.aoyama.ac.jp/en/outline/history.html

Benefits: For the most part, we try to provide teachers commuting to Sagamihara with at least three classes to teach. On some days, we can schedule four classes, each class being 90 minutes in length. As far as possible when arranging teachers' schedules, we try to acknowledge seniority, giving the first choice of times to those teachers who have served the longest in the program. Currently, the base rate for a single 90-minute class or koma is 6,880 yen per week. The monthly salary would be 27,520 yen. You will receive 6-months’ pay for each semester you teach. Teaching the full year, you will receive payment for 12 months. Those teaching in the Night School at the Shibuya campus receive an additional 220 yen for the first period class and an additional 440 yen for the second period class. The maximum number of classes for part-time teachers is five and the retirement age is 68. In addition to the salary, the university reimburses teachers for transportation to the school and provides them with a library card, an email account, and may host their websites.
