Appendix Color Plates of Solanales Species The first half of the color plates (Plates 1–8) shows a selection of phytochemically prominent solanaceous species, the second half (Plates 9–16) a selection of convol- vulaceous counterparts. The scientific name of the species in bold (for authorities see text and tables) may be followed (in brackets) by a frequently used though invalid synonym and/or a common name if existent. The next information refers to the habitus, origin/natural distribution, and – if applicable – cultivation. If more than one photograph is shown for a certain species there will be explanations for each of them. Finally, section numbers of the phytochemical Chapters 3–8 are given, where the respective species are discussed. The individually combined occurrence of sec- ondary metabolites from different structural classes characterizes every species. However, it has to be remembered that a small number of citations does not neces- sarily indicate a poorer secondary metabolism in a respective species compared with others; this may just be due to less studies being carried out. We explored all of these and more during our 25-day adventure across the country. Highlights were many and included Orange River Francolin, thousands of Cape Gannets, multiple Secretarybirds, stunning Knysna Turaco, Ground Woodpecker, Botha’s Lark, Bush Blackcap, Cape Parrot, Aardvark, Aardwolf, Caracal, Oribi and Giant Bullfrog, along with spectacular scenery, great food and excellent accommodation throughout. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Despite havoc-wreaking weather that delayed flights on the other side of the world, everyone managed to arrive (just!) in South Africa for the start of our keenly-awaited tour. We began our 25-day cross-country exploration with a drive along Zaagkuildrift Road. This unassuming stretch of dirt road is well-known in local birding circles and can offer up a wide range of species thanks to its variety of habitats – which include open grassland, acacia woodland, wetlands and a seasonal floodplain. In this thesis, I investigate morphological variation, mating and genetic diversity of five taxa of bird-pollinated Babiana (Iridaceae), including two species with specialized bird perches. Field observations in 12 populations demonstrated that sunbirds were the primary pollinators. Babiana ringens exhibited correlated geographic variation in flower and perch size. Controlled field pollinations revealed self-compatibility and low pollen limitation in B. ringens subspecies, and self-incompatibility and chronic pollen limitation in B. hirsuta. Allozyme markers demonstrated moderate to high selfing rates among populations and considerable variation in levels of genetic diversity. In B. ringens there was a positive relation between the geographic and genetic distance of populations. The results of a manipulative field experiment indicated position-dependent herbivory on inflorescences of B. hirsuta and this could play a role in the evolution of specialized bird perches in Babiana. ii Acknowledgments First, I would like to thank my supervisor Spencer Barrett for his wealth of knowledge, his contagious enthusiasm about the natural world, and for pushing me further than I thought I could go. -

Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste Resumo da Bahia, Departamento de Ciências Naturais, Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, Brasil Solanaceae é uma das maiores famílias de plantas vasculares, com 100 gêneros e ca. de 2.500 espécies, com distribuição subcosmopolita e maior diversidade na região Neotropical. Este trabalho realizou um levantamento florístico das espécies de Palavras-chave Solanales. Taxonomia. Florística. Solanaceae no município de Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, em área ecotonal entre Nordeste. Caatinga e Mata Atlântica. Foram realizadas coletas semanais de agosto/2019 a março/2020, totalizando 30 espécimes, depositados nos herbários HUESBVC e HVC. Keywords Solanales. Taxonomy. Floristics. Foram registradas 19 espécies, distribuídas em nove gêneros: Brunfelsia (2 spp.), Northeast. Capsicum (1 sp.), Cestrum (1 sp.), Datura (1 sp.), Iochroma (1 sp.) Nicandra (1 sp.), Nicotiana (1 sp.), Physalis (1 sp.) e Solanum (10 spp.). Dentre as espécies coletadas, cinco são endêmicas para o Brasil e 11 foram novos registros para o município. Nossos resultados demonstram que Solanaceae é uma família de elevada riqueza de espécies no município, contribuindo para o conhecimento da flora local. Abstract Solanaceae is one of the largest families of vascular plants, with 100 genera and ca. 2,500 species, with subcosmopolitan distribution and greater diversity in the Neotropical region. This work carried out a floristic survey of Solanaceae species in the municipality of Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, in an ecotonal area between Caatinga and Atlantic Forest. -

NIEMEYER¹ Summary: Pollen of species from the genus Nicotiana (Solanaceae) present in Chile: Evaluation of the usefulness of morphological characters as biomarkers in archaeological studies. The alkaloid nicotine is taken up when Nicotiana plants are smoked, chewed or snuffed. The use of tobacco has been detected by the presence of nicotine in the residues of archaeological pipes and also in mummified human hair; however, the lack of species-specific markers has made it impossible to determine theNicotiana species involved. Pollen has been used as a reliable biomarker for identifications at the family or genus levels. We report herein the study of pollen from 10 native species of Nicotiana from Chile, including the wild N. glauca and the cultivated N. tabacum, using both optical and scanning electron microscopy. The results show minimal interspecific qualitative differences. Although the mean values of ratio polar and equatorial diameters in an equatorial view, colpus length and exine thickness show statistically significant differences, the data variance does not allow its use in the identification of Nicotiana at the species level and therefore the usefulness of pollen as a biomarker is limited at the species level. A phylogeny of Solanaceae is presented based on the chloroplast DNA regions ndhF and trnLF. With 89 genera and 190 species included, this represents a nearly comprehensive genus-level sampling and provides a framework phylogeny for the entire family that helps integrate many previously-published phylogenetic studies within So- lanaceae. The four genera comprising the family Goetzeaceae and the monotypic families Duckeodendraceae, Nolanaceae, and Sclerophylaceae, often recognized in traditional classifications, are shown to be included in Solanaceae. The current results corroborate previous studies that identify a monophyletic subfamily Solanoideae and the more inclusive “x = 12” clade, which includes Nicotiana and the Australian tribe Anthocercideae. These results also provide greater resolution among lineages within Solanoideae, confirming Jaltomata as sister to Solanum and identifying a clade comprised primarily of tribes Capsiceae (Capsicum and Lycianthes) and Physaleae. -

From the spectacular scenery and endemic birds of the Cape to the megafauna-filled wilderness of Kruger National Park, every single day brings something new, surprising, and awe-inspiring. This trip exceeded expectations—over 400 species of birds and an incredible 60 species of mammals, all seen while staying in interesting, varied, and excellent accommodations, eating delicious food, and thoroughly enjoying all aspects of traveling in South Africa. It’s hard to know where to start with bird and animal highlights. There are, of course, the most sought-after birds, like Protea Canary, Cape Rockjumper, Black Harrier, Rudd’s Lark, Black-eared Sparrowlark, Southern Black Korhaan, and Blue Korhaan. There were also the incredible bird experiences—the Shy Albatrosses surrounding our pelagic boat, the Cape Sugarbird singing from atop of king protea flower, the nest-building Knysna Turacos, the Water Thick-knees trying to chase a Water Monitor away from their nest. Mammals take a front seat in South Africa, too. We had incredible sightings of Leopard and Lion in Kruger, numerous White and a single Black Rhinoceros, along with many encounters with Elephant, Giraffes, and other iconic African animals. But we also saw many awesome small mammals, including Meerkat, Large- and Small- spotted Genet, White-tailed Mongoose, and a Cape Clawless Otter munching on a fish. -

Division of Insecticide Investigations, Bureau of Entomology and Plant Quarantine, Agri- cultural Research Administration^ United States Department of Agriculture INTRODUCTION Although it has been known for many years that the main alkaloid in the cultivated species Nicotiana tabacum L. and N. rustica L. is nicotine (C10H14N2), comparatively little analytical chemical work has been done on the wild species of Nicotiana. In 1934 Shmuk (lay stated that N, glauca contained an alkaloid other than nicotine that was not identified. The following year Smith (18) identified the principal alkaloid in this species as anabasine,beta-pyridyl-a'-piperi- dine. Concurrently, Shmuk and Khmura (17) reported that certain other species of Nicotiana contained alkaloids whose picrates had melting points different from that of nicotine, but again they were not identified. iV. sylvestris and crosses of this species with iV. tabacum were discussed in some detail. In 1937 Smith (19) determined the main alkaloid in Nicotiana sylvestris to be nornicotine (C9H12N2), and at approximately the same time Shmuk (16) reported: It is known that alcaloids differing in chemical structure are contained in different species of Nicotiana; thus, N. tabacum, N, rustica, N. alata, N. Langs- dor ffii all contain nicotine; N. sylvestris and N. Rusbyi [N, tomentosiformis Goodsp.] contain an alcaloid belonging to the secondary bases—^probably nornicotine, while N. glauca contains anabasine. Nicotine has been found also in Nicotiana attenuata (1), N, suave- olens (13) j and N. -
