CPI program launched in District Mardan, Swabi and Peshawar in 2002. Salik Development (SDF) signed an agreement for CPI Phase I with PPAF. The CPI schemes begun properly in November, 2002. Three phases of CPI have been completed successfully during the year. While the 4th phase agreement has been signed. The main schemes and activities of CPI are construction of link roads, street pavement, construction of main drains and street drains, Installation of communal afridio hand pumps, irrigation nakkas, and construction of culverts, small bridges and capacity building of COs. SDF has implemented total 24 schemes in 24 backward communities of district Mardan and Tehsil Takht Bhai. The details are as follow. Methodology The project staff consists of one CPI coordinator, one social organizer, one engineer and an accountant. The CPI Coordinator is responsible for all project implementation activities, planning and management with the assistance of social organizer. Social organizer attends community meetings and gatherings. He is especially responsible for social mobilization and in fact he is the person of the community. The job description of engineer is to analyze COs proposals, project area survey and preparation of estimated budget for schemes. Accountant maintain all project accounts and he also facilitate COs for accounts maintenance. Social organizer is the match stick and burn the fire of sensitization. He goes to the community and meets with project stake holders i.e community leader, teachers, social workers, religious leaders, Imam Masjid, youth and farmers for choosing an activist. He meets individually and collectively with community members of project area for social mobilization and organization purposes. Social organizer and CPI coordinator prepare community for 20 % shares against 80 % grant from SDF. This process usually takes 3 months. After the period of 3 months the CO becomes well equipped for project implementation. The COs pass a resolution in a BBCM for a prioritized scheme. The they send the resolution to SDF head office and the CPI project staff analyze the proposal and finally project approval Committee (PAC) approve the proposal. The project work begins under supervision of CPI project staff and concerned CO. In case of hand pump installation schemes, volunteers are trained from the community for hand pumps repairs and maintenance in case of fault in hand pumps. 7 Salik Development Foundation, Annual Report 2004-05 Water supply and Sanitation The average condition of water of SDF working area is poor. The water is hard and contaminated in hilly areas. SDF has installed community afridio hand pumps and water supply pipe lines. In 2005 SDF has signed an agreement with TVO for the project water supply, sanitation and health education. The project launched in a backward community of Tehsil Takht Bhai named saro shah. the said community had no access to clean drinking water and there were no latrines in the houses. Due to open defecation ,faeces and dirty water from house holds to the streets, many diseases and abnormalities had been occurred. SDF has installed 50 community afridio hand pumps and constructed 300 hundred complete latrines in the said community. Its monthly meeting is held every 2nd date of the month at SDF office. All COs members participate in the meeting. The aim and objectives of SDCC is to strengthen developmental activities in district Mardan, Information sharing and sustainable coordination. Specific Objectives of SDCC • Strengthening Coordination between COs and SDF • Experience Sharing to facilitate each other • Capacity Building of COs • Future Planning for CPI schemes • Group discussion on issues and finding sustainable solution Meeting Methodology The reminder for meeting is given to all COs before a few days and they are asked for agenda, the COs members give points for agenda and finally the CPI staff prepare agenda for SDCC monthly meeting. In the meeting all COs members describe their progress, saving status and constraints faced during implementation.

    Weekly Morbidity and Mortality Report (WMMR) IDP Hosting Districts, NWFP, Pakistan Week # 27 (27 Jun – 3 July), 2009 Emergency Humanitarian Action (EHA) Islamabad, Pakistan Children with Leishmaniasis attended for treatment in Jalozai II, IDP camp (Picture by WHO Team) Highlights: • Two alerts of AWD cases received (one from district Mardan and another from IDP camp Palosa‐II, district Charrsada) were investigated and identified as severe acute diarrhoea. • During this week, 198 health facilities reported 67430 patients’ consultations through the DEWS network • Acute Diarrhoea was reported in 8% (5682) of the total consultations in all age groups, while it accounts for 15% of consultations in children <5 years of age and 7% of the consultations in the patients above 5 years age • Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) continues to be the leading cause of morbidity, with a total of 14036 consultations (21% of total consultations) in IDP hosting districts NWFP. • In children less than 5 years of age, ARI accounts for 4129 (28%) of the total consultations.     PAKISTAN/NWFP CONFLICT Situation Report no. 3 19 May 2009 Highlights As of 18 May, according to the Provincial Relief Commissionerate, the number of IDPs has risen to 2182 503 from 1 716 026 on 15 May in 11 NWFP districts (287 087 in 26 IDP camps and 1 895 476 outside). A suspected measles outbreak alert reported in Labor Colony, Mardan District, which is being investigated. Formation of Acute Watery Diarrhoea Response Team is initiated in collaboration with UNICEF, Department of Health and other partners. Lt. General Nadeem Ahmed, Head of Special Support Group for IDPs informed in a meeting held on 18 May in Peshawar that the operation in Bajaur agency is completed and IDPs from this area can return home. The World Bank is planning to conduct damage and needs assessment. Health Impact • The general health situation in all IDP hosting districts in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) in camps and host communities remains stable. But rising trends in diarrhoea cases are being reported from the Jalozai IDP camps. An alert of suspected measles outbreak reported from Mardan district. Disease surveillance teams are closely monitoring the situation. Health Sector Response • UNFPA is distributing 11 000 hygiene kits to IDP families in camps. • UNFPA completed Maternal Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) situational analysis survey in the Mardan, Sawabi, Nowshera and Charsadda districts. A report is being compiled. • Measles campaigns have bee been conducted by department of health supported by UNICEF and WHO in Sheikh Shehzad, Sheikh Yaseen, Jalozai, Mazdoorabad Yar Hussain and labor colony camps and around 17051 children (9 months–13 years) have been vaccinated.

The primary objectives of the project were to formulate plans for future research, highlight and project the cultural heritage of the Province and to promote cultural tourism for sustainable development. The Department started the project in 1993 and since then has published two survey reports of the Charsadda and Swabi Districts. 1 Dr. Abdur Rahman conducted survey of the Peshawar and Nowshera Districts and he will publish the report after analysis of the data. 2 Conducted by the present author, the current report is focussed on the archaeological survey of the Mardan District, also referred to as the Yusafzai Plain or District.
