  • Alwoodley Parish – Application For
ALWOODLEY PARISH COUNCIL APPLICATION FOR DESIGNATION OF A NEIGHBOURHOOD AREA Prepared on behalf of Alwoodley Parish Council 5 November 2013 Introduction Alwoodley, for the purposes of this application, is a civil parish created in 2008 within the City of Leeds. Some of the adjacent areas are commonly referred to as being in Alwoodley but do not form part of the civil parish. It lies some 5 miles north of the city centre on the northern edge of the West Yorkshire conurbation. The parish is on a ridge between the valleys of the River Aire and River Wharfe. It is bounded by the suburbs of Adel and Bramhope to the west, Harrogate Road to the east, Moor Allerton to the south and Harewood parish to the north. The northern part of the parish is mixed farmland in the Green Belt in which Eccup Reservoir is situated. To the north of the parish is the Harewood Estate. Moortown and Sandmoor golf courses lie within the parish together with part of Headingley golf course. There are several sports fields. The site of a Roman road crosses the parish from West to East, from Ilkley to Tadcaster, close to Alwoodley Lane. Alwoodley Old Hall stood adjacent to the site of Eccup Reservoir in the present grounds of Sandmoor Golf Club. Built in the 17th century it was demolished in 1969. Early on the 20th century Alwoodley became a leisure destination for Leeds inhabitants; before that it was an isolated agricultural community. Much of the suburban area was developed between 1920 and 1980 . Leeds Country Way and two long distance footpaths, the Dales Way and the Ebor Way, cross or lie on the edge of the parish.

  • The Roundhay Almshouses. © by Anne Wilkinson Almshouses Have Existed for Over a Thousand Years, Providing Care for the Poor
From Oak Leaves, Part 12, Autumn 2012 - published by Oakwood and District Historical Society [ODHS] The Roundhay Almshouses. © By Anne Wilkinson Almshouses have existed for over a thousand years, providing care for the poor and sick and originally attached to religious houses. Later, after the dissolution of the monasteries, (when it is believed that half the existing provision of hospitals and almshouses disappeared) the Elizabethan Poor Law was the first attempt at a national welfare policy. But by the nineteenth century private provision of almshouses seems to have been more important than public provision, and the Victorian period saw a boom in charitable activity.1 Though the Nicholson family did not employ large numbers of servants or workers, they did recognise the need to help those too old or infirm to provide for themselves; this article relates to the Roundhay almshouses, and to one particular family living there from 1887 -1906. In 1837 Stephen Nicholson of Roundhay Park conveyed land for the building of a school, six almshouses and master's and mistress's house. The long, thin site bordering the High Road leading to Wetherby stood in front of the church and close to the carriage drive leading to the Nicholson's residence, the Mansion, the group of buildings being designed by Thomas Taylor. Humphrey Repton had expressed an enthusiasm for the Gothic style for such buildings; 'if the Gothic character be introduced in any small building, there is none more appropriate than the schools, which of late, have been erected ... by individuals,

  • Pannal and Burn Bridge Parish Council: How a New Parish Council Was Created in Pannal, Yorkshire
Pannal and Burn Bridge Parish Council: How A New Parish Council Was Created In Pannal, Yorkshire Headlines: The villages of Pannal and Burn Bridge are in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire. This case study tells the story of how the Pannal Village Society triggered a Community Governance Review, successfully establishing a parish council for Pannal and Burn Bridge. The case study provides an example of good practice for campaigns aspiring to establish a town and parish council, giving advice on how to build a good relationship with the principal authority and how to overcome challenges throughout the campaign. The main lesson to share from this case study is that where a campaign group works positively over a sustained period with both officers and members of its principal local authority it is possible to complete the full campaign journey. To this end Pannal and Burn Bridge Parish Council held its first elections in May 2016, working closely in partnership with Harrogate Borough Council. Why A Council Is Wanted: Then Pannal and Burn Bridge campaign group wished to establish a parish council as a new parish council is able to increase the illage’s ability to manage its assets and to influence development plans in its area, being a legacy of the Pannal Village Society. The Pannal Village Society was created in the early 1990s under the initiative of a former Harrogate Borough councillor at the time, who had a firm commitment that Pannal was missing out by not having a parish council. Parish Councils are statutory consultees in planning matters and, as such, have to be consulted on planning issues within their parish and, in Harrogate, have an opportunity to present their views at relevant council meetings.

  • May 2021 FOI 2387-21 Drink Spiking
Our ref: 2387/21 Figures for incidents of drink spiking in your region over the last 5 years (year by year) I would appreciate it if the figures can be broken down to the nearest city/town. Can you also tell me the number of prosecutions there have been for the above offences and how many of those resulted in a conviction? Please see the attached document. West Yorkshire Police receive reports of crimes that have occurred following a victim having their drink spiked, crimes such as rape, sexual assault, violence with or without injury and theft. West Yorkshire Police take all offences seriously and will ensure that all reports are investigated. Specifically for victims of rape and serious sexual offences, depending on when the offence occurred, they would be offered an examination at our Sexual Assault Referral Centre, where forensic samples, including a blood sample for toxicology can be taken, with the victim’s consent, if within the timeframes and guidance from the Faculty for Forensic and Legal Medicine. West Yorkshire Police work with support agencies to ensure that all victims of crime are offered support through the criminal justice process, including specialist support such as from Independent Sexual Violence Advisors. Recorded crime relating to spiked drinks, 01/01/2016 to 31/12/2020 Notes Data represents the number of crimes recorded during the period which: - were not subsequently cancelled - contain the search term %DR_NK%SPIK% or %SPIK%DR_NK% within the crime notes, crime summary and/or MO - specifically related to a drug/poison/other noxious substance having been placed in a drink No restrictions were placed on the type of drink, the type of drug/poison or the motivation behind the act (i.e.
