DEDICATION This manual is dedicated to all those persons who are, or have been, involved in the training of protected area personnel, in recognition of the fact that their work generally has been undervalued and little supported. It is hoped that this manual will motivate them, and constitute an important step forward toward achieving a more effective and professional cadre of trainers and, ultimately, more efficiently and effectively managed protected areas throughout the world. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This manual is an abridged and updated version of a Spanish language version published by the United States National Park Service in 1993. At that time, many Latinamericans contributed to the content and overall format of the manual. Their contributions are still evident in the English language edition. PREFACE During the last several decades, the United States National Park Service (USNPS) has been very active throughout the world in supporting the training of protected area personnel. The Service strongly believes that training constitutes an essential element of any institutional strengthening program designed to improve an institution's ability to develop and manage protected areas anywhere in the world. The importance of training and of the need to have written training materials has been emphasized most recently in the IUCN General Assembly held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1994, and in the IV World Congress on National Parks held in Caracas, Venezuela in 1992. All of the participants in both events recognized that, in general, there has been a lack of both quantity and quality of training for protected area personnel. The need for partnerships and collaboration between those more fortunate protected area systems and those less fortunate ones was emphasized. As a result, in 1993 the USNPS published an updated version of a 1989 Spanish language training manual. The focus of this Manual was on providing lesson plans and supporting documents for trainers involved in preparing training courses. Subsequent experience by both Latinamerican and USNPS trainers has shown that the Manual was an extremely useful tool for improving training quality. Due to the success of the Spanish language edition as a training support document, the USNPS decided to publish an English language version so that the materials could be available throughout the English-speaking world. Many changes have been made to the original edition in order to shorten it and make it more relevant to a wider audience. Chief among them are: - Less reliance has been placed on original Spanish language documents, and more on English language sources, especially USNPS. - An emphasis on those topics that are particularly relevant today: tourism; relationship of local people and protected areas; administration and human relations; and environmental interpretation. - While "Maintenance" has been downgraded in terms of its length and content and included in the Administration Unit, it is still considered to be a priority topic. To the extent possible, USNPS will continue to promote and support training programs which strengthen local institutions' capacity to carry out their conservation mandates. We hope that this Manual will be a valuable tool in achieving that goal. USING THE MANUAL A. OBJECTIVES OF THE MANUAL The main objective of this manual is to provide a curriculum which will serve as basis for the development of a systematic and permanent training program in the various protected area systems around the world where these programs are lacking. Nevertheless, it should be recognized that this manual is primarily concerned with the WHAT to train, and not with the HOW. The methods and techniques of transmitting the message (the WHAT) are just as important as the message itself. B. INTENDED MANUAL USERS This manual has been designed to be used by persons interested and/or involved in organizing training events for protected area personnel, i.e. trainers, heads of training programs, instructors. The persons who use the manual can be professionals of the central office of a protected area system, professionals in charge of individual protected areas interested in training their personnel, or professionals working for NGOs or local governments who manage protected areas. The ideas and the information presented in the Manual can be used by persons with a wide variety of technical and professional backgrounds, and by both public and private institutions. However, it should be noted that most of the Lesson Plans require that the user have some basic knowledge of the topic in order to use them effectively. The Manual is useful for organizing events for personnel of any management category, although its orientation is more towards the more protected categories: national parks, reserves, monuments, wildlife refuges, etc. The criteria and methodological proposals can serve as the basis for preparing training programs for other management categories by adjusting the content to emphasize the sustainable use and extraction of natural resources. C. MANUAL'S APPLICATION This manual is designed so that the trainer or instructor can take advantage of its structure in the organization of a training course and in the presentation of the selected topics or themes. Obviously each country's and each protected area's situation is different, in terms of the most appropriate topics and themes, the technical level of the personnel, and in the economic and administrative capacity to organize training events. The Manual recognizes this fact; what is presented in each Unit is an outline for a logical, systematic development of the Unit's theme. The training organizer must adapt the content of the Unit and Lessons to his own specific situation, taking into account: - the purpose of the event, i.e. general orientation, creating a particular skill, qualifying personnel for possible promotion; - most appropriate topics; - the educational level of the trainees; - the experience level of the trainees; - length of the training event; - available funding; - available instructors, and their ability to teach the pertinent topics. It is hoped that the Manual will become a working document for the user, and that he will make the needed modifications

The island’s alleged “ecocide” is offered as a cautionary tale of our own environmental recklessness. The actual archaeological and historical record for the island reveals that while biodiver- sity loss unfolded, the ancient Polynesians persisted and succeeded. Demographic “collapse” came with epidemics of Old World diseases introduced by European visitors. In this paper, we outline the process of prehistoric landscape transformation that took place on Rapa Nui.

J index is the percent of similarity of a seed image with a figure taken as a model. Models in shape quantification include geometrical figures (circle, ellipse, oval ::: ) and their derivatives, as well as other figures obtained as geometric representations of algebraic equations. The analysis is based on three sources: Published work, images available on the Internet, and seeds collected or stored in our collections. Some of the models here described are applied for the first time in seed morphology, like the superellipses, a group of bidimensional figures that represent well seed shape in species of the Calamoideae and Phoenix canariensis Hort. ex Chabaud.

I identify the main values, and the importance of conserving such heritage, making comments about past and current activities of some national institutions interested in biodiversity conservation. I emphasize actions related to increasing and improving knowledge on biodiversity, legislation, some economic and social values, and protection of biodiversity in the field. I identify the main threats to Chile's biodiversity and give recommendations for maintaining and enhancing its conservation. Chile has developed many efforts to avoid biodiversity losses. It has enacted legislation, maintained institutions, and taken actions that favor biological diversity. However, some of the policies, legislation, and actions have been too specific, disperse, and uncoordinated. A system of inter-institutional coordination is urgently required. An efficient approach, through symposia, to identify the most threatened woody plant and terrestrial vertebrate species, was developed. Now, is time to define conservation status for species not included in previous symposia, identify the most threatened species, and begin programs to increase their population size. It is essential to initiate actions concerning the protection of amphibians, reptiles, cacti, and non-woody terrestrial plants. Also, it is urgent to start conservation activities for aquatic environments.

Quantitatively, palms indicate minimum cold month mean temperature (CMMT) at 2–8 °C in palaeoclimate reconstructions. These data have accentuated model-proxy mismatches for high latitudes during Paleogene hyperthermals when palms expanded poleward in both hemispheres. We constructed a manually fltered dataset of >20,000 georeferenced Arecaceae records, by eliminating cultivars. Statistically derived mean annual temperature, mean annual temperature range, and CMMT thresholds for the Arecaceae and lower rank subfamilies and tribes reveal large diferences in temperature sensitivity depending on lower taxonomic classifcation. Cold tolerant tribes such as the Trachycarpeae produce thresholds as low as CMMT ≥ 2.2 °C. However, within the palm family, CMMT < 5 °C is anomalous. Moreover, palm expansion into temperate biomes is likely a post-Palaeogene event. We recognize a CMMT ≥ 5.2 °C threshold for the palm family, unless a lower taxonomic rank can be assigned. Reconstructing climates of the geological past, particular temperature, is of considerable interest for understand- 1–4 ing climates under higher than present-day atmospheric CO2 levels (pCO2) .

Arecoideae, and contains a number of palms with significant economic importance, including the monotypic and pantropical Cocos nucifera L., the coconut, the origins of which have been one of the ‘‘abominable mysteries’’ of palm systematics for decades. Previous studies with predominantly plastid genes weakly supported American ancestry for the coconut but ambiguous sister relationships. In this paper, we use multiple single copy nuclear loci to address the phylogeny of the Cocoseae subtribe Attaleinae, and resolve the closest extant relative of the coconut. Methodology/Principal Findings: We present the results of combined analysis of DNA sequences of seven WRKY transcription factor loci across 72 samples of Arecaceae tribe Cocoseae subtribe Attaleinae, representing all genera classified within the subtribe, and three outgroup taxa with maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian approaches, producing highly congruent and well-resolved trees that robustly identify the genus Syagrus as sister to Cocos and resolve novel and well-supported relationships among the other genera of the Attaleinae.

Baillon, is the world’s second southernmost palm, endemic from Chile and it is the only species of its genus. In days gone by, the Chilean palm covered 600 km of the country forming several plant units. Varied anthropogenic interventions have caused fragmentation of the palm population, decrease of seed bank and decline of juvenile individuals. Lluís Solé i Sabarís s/n, 08028 Barcelona, Spain ABSTRACT Easter Island deforestation has traditionally been viewed as an abrupt island-wide event caused by the prehistoric Rapanui civilization, which precipitated its own cultural collapse. This view emerges from early palaeoecological analyses of lake sediments, which showed a sudden and total replacement of palm pollen by grass pollen shortly after Polynesian settlement (800-1200 CE). However, further palaeoecological research has challenged this view, showing that the apparent abruptness and island-wide synchronicity of forest removal was an artefact due to the occurrence of a sedimentary gap of several millennia that prevented a detailed record of the replacement of palm-dominated forests by grass meadows. During the last decade, several continuous (gap-free) and chronologically coherent sediment cores encompassing the last millennia have been retrieved and analysed, providing a new picture of forest removal on Easter Island. According to these analyses, deforestation was not abrupt but gradual and occurred at different times and rates, depending on the site. Regarding the causes, humans were not the only factors responsible for forest clearing, as climatic droughts as well as climate-human-landscape feedbacks and synergies also played a role. In summary, the deforestation of Easter Island was a complex process that was spatially and temporally heterogeneous and took place under the actions and interactions of both natural and anthropogenic drivers. In addition, archaeological evidence shows that the Rapanui civilization was resilient to deforestation and remained healthy until European contact, which contradicts the occurrence of a cultural collapse.

ABSTRACT An ecosystem rehabilitation project in the subhumid 7 Region of central Chile is described, with a three-tiered research and development (R & D) approach that addresses the structure and functioning of soils and vegetation and aims, in the long-term, at a full scale transformation of the region into a mosaic of agroforestry systems and natural ecosystem reserves. The important role of native and carefully-screened exotic nitrogen-fixing legumes in "jumpstarting" the rehabilitation process is underlined. We then suggest that a similar R & D approach could be applied in the arid "Norte Chico" region of northern Chile as well. Apart from immediate interventions, emphasis is placed on revised management of land and water, flora and fauna through the replacement of "artificial negative selection" by a strategy of "positive selection". Also noted are the numerous gaps in current knowledge and the grinding socio-economic realities that hinder any rapid realization of our optimistic scenario.
