YEARS OF STORM & STRESS Joseph Matt & Americanism with a commentary and notes by Paul Likoudis on Matt's “A Centenary of Catholic Life in Minnesota” published by The Wanderer, January – August 2012 From January to August 2012, The Wanderer published, and offered commentary, on a remarkable series of 36 articles written by this newspaper's long-serving editor Joseph Matt (1877-1966) in 1950-'51 on Americanism, “the German question,” and subjects related to “Cahenslyism,” named after the German Catholic layman Peter Paul Cahensly, who devoted himself to the aid of German-Catholic immigrants. In this series of articles, Joseph Matt told the German-American Catholics' side of the story of what the late Monsignor George Kelly would call the “Battle for the American Church”; i.e. German Catholic opposition to the nascent modernism in Americanism and the Americanist hierarchy's determination to assimilate German Catholics into the American melting pot. As a sort of prelude to this series, we will enter the field of German-American Catholic historiography with some snips from a paper read by University of Chicago historian Kathleen Neils Conzen at the first Edmund Spevack Memorial Lecture at Harvard University, November 7, 2003, which touches on many of the issues we will see Joseph Matt discussing in that series of 36 articles sixty years ago, as he reflected back on the battles of the of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: “....Catholicism has long seemed like an embarrassing guest at the table of American historiography,” observed Conzen, “best ignored in the hope that it will not make a disturbing fuss. -

These themes are united to a program of reform touching on doctrinal, ecclesiological, and pastoral matters; as well as attendant wider theological, philosophical, and affective issues. However, the general unsystematicity of both these readings and Francis’ texts themselves makes it difficult to receive those texts in a way that integrates these various themes. -

Introduction Today, many Catholic parochial schools are facing declining enrollment and lack of funding. This naturally leads to the question, ‘Do we really need parochial schools?’ This is not a new question. In fact, the necessity of parochial schools was a central issue facing the Catholic Church in America during the Nineteenth Century. It seemingly strikes at the core of the Catholic School Controversy that erupted in the 1890’s. Two of the leading bishops in the controversy representing opposing sides were Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid of Rochester and Archbishop John Ireland of St. Paul. McQuaid enjoyed the support of Archbishop Michael Corrigan of New York while Ireland had the support of Cardinal Gibbons of Baltimore. Beginning in the 1870’s McQuaid was a regular lecturer on the need for Catholic Schools. Ireland was a bishop of a ‘frontier’ diocese and an avid supporter of Americanization. He sought to help Catholic immigrants become good American citizens and thus saw the ideal as Catholics attending public schools. For Ireland, parochial schools were only necessary because the public schools failed in their responsibilities. A controversy is never simple. This paper will examine the controversy between Archbishop Ireland and Bishop McQuaid. It will present the background on each bishop and the circumstances that helped shape their position on the need for Catholic Schools. In order to do this, we must first understand the setting of the Catholic Church in America leading up to the eruption of the controversy in the 1890’s. -

Used with permission. Within the last year the role of the intellectual in American society has been submitted to a searching scrutiny rarely if ever before witnessed in this country. Some of these critiques, such as the comments of Russell Kirk and Clinton Rossiter, have been more immediately concerned with the relation of the intellectual to what has been termed the "new conservatism."1 The greater number, however, have taken a broader view, and have sought to trace the causes for the anti-intellectual temper of our society, and to suggest ways that will enable the intellectual to move out of the isolated and suspect position to which so many of his fellow citizens have assigned him. In this latter category mention might be made of the stimulating essays of Francis G. Wilson, Phillip Blair Rice, Robert F. Fitch, Henry Steele Commager, John U. Nef, and Merle Curti.2 The authors of all these articles are themselves intellectuals. The sincerity with which they approach their task is manifest, and the loyalty which they demonstrate to the highest ideals of their profession will prove heartening to anyone who has chosen a vocation to the intellectual life. Their analysis reveals a universal agreement that the situation of the intellectual in the United States has been, and is at the present time, deplorable. But what gives to the observations of these scholars a truly refreshing quality is the healthy spirit of self-criticism which most of them display. -

As milestones of the global interfaith movement, American religious freedom and pluralism, and the relation of religion to modernity, the Chicago Parliaments of Religions offer a unique window through which to view this Catholic struggle at work in the religious public square created by the Parliaments and the evolution of that struggle over the course of the century framed by the two Chicago events. In relation to other religions, the Catholic Church stretched itself from an exclusivist position of being the only true and good religion to an inclusivist position of recognizing that truth and good can be present in other religions. Uniquely, Catholic involvement in the centennial Parliament made the Church stretch itself even further, beyond the exclusivist-inclusivist spectrum into a pluralist framework in which the Church acted humbly as one religion among many. -

Thomas Joseph Bouquillon: Americanist, Neo-Scholastic, Or Manualist?
• CTSA PROCEEDINGS 50 (1995): 156-73 • THOMAS JOSEPH BOUQUILLON: AMERICANIST, NEO-SCHOLASTIC, OR MANUALIST? Thomas Joseph Bouquillon was born near Lille in Belgium in 1840 the second of five children of a family of small landowners.1 He felt a call to the priesthood and had a brilliant record as a student at the minor seminary at Roulers and the major seminary at Bruges. In 1863 the Bishop of Bruges sent this young student to Rome to continue his studies and he obtained a doctorate in theology at the Gregorian University in Rome in 1867. With his Roman doctorate Bouquillon began to teach fundamental moral theology at the major seminary in Bruges in 1867 but two years later moved to the class of special moral theology which deals with specific actions. In August 1877 his bishop authorized him to accept the chair of moral theology in the faculty of theology of the newly established Catholic University of Lille. However, in 1885 he left this chair at Lille for reasons that are not altogether clear and retired to the Benedictine monastery of Maredsous to work on a thorough revision of his book on fundamental moral theology which had first been published in 1873. He had found it difficult to do such work while teaching, preparing courses, and directing students at Lille.2 The second edition, eventually published in 1890, added much to the original and included a long history of moral theology which showed both his knowledge of the sources and his ability to synthesize and analyze their contributions.3 Meanwhile the bishops of the United States announced their intention to open, with papal authorization, the Pontifical Catholic University of America in Washington, D. -

Theological Studies 62 (2001) NOTES ON MORAL THEOLOGY: MORAL THEOLOGY AND HISTORY JAMES F. KEENAN, S.J. [In section one of Notes on Moral Theology the author describes writings by moral theologians who use history for a variety of pur- poses, at least five different purposes, from determining a critical identity for moral theology to supporting endangered ideas and directing future investigations. He concludes by noting that moral- ists have looked almost exclusively at the history of ideas; his hope for the future is that these researchers will turn to the history of practices as they continue to engage history so creatively.] WENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO, the great moralist/historian Louis Vereecke, T commenting on the growing number of studies dedicated to the his- tory of moral theology, claimed: “It is no longer necessary to demonstrate the possibility of a history of moral theology.”1 At that time, Vereecke reviewed nine, mostly French works. Yet this “young discipline,” as he called it, has been developing exponentially over the past 50 years. Because of the research brought to light by Vereecke and before him by Odon Lottin, moral theologians extending from Bernhard Ha¨ring to Jean Porter have been turning to history for a variety of reasons. In what follows I attempt to name some of those reasons, studying along the way the sig- nificance of those contributions. TO VALIDATE INNOVATION At the beginning of Ha¨ring’s 1600-page magisterial manual, The Law of Christ, there is a slim 33-page “historical survey of moral theology.” Those pages serve as a sort of guarantee that what he presents in his three vol- umes will be within the tradition. -

Early attempts to establish Catholic schools led to incidents which required heroism of the leaders and sacrifices by the laity. The U.S. Catholic schools had their roots in European Catholic countries and, as a result, the first schools in the western hemisphere were located in Spanish and French territories. The growth of the 13 British colonies set the pattern for the future development of the colonies and the U.S. public school systems. At the time, Catholics were regarded as an insignificant and powerless minority. The U.S. Constitution's First Amendment has led to the United States being the only country in the western hemisphere which prohibits religious observances in public schools. From 1783-1828, U.S. Catholics, while facing hostility, noverty, and the frontier wilderness, established an educational philosophy and school organizational pattern.
