John Carroll, consecrated as the nation’s first Catholic Ibishop in 1790, had commissioned Capitol architect Benjamin Latrobe and worked with him on the building’s design. They planned a neoclassi- cal brick facade and an interior with the cruciform shape, nave, narthex, and chorus of a European cathedral. -

M urray Peter George Doyle’s importance in the emotional life of Walt Whit man is well established. The romantic friendship that sprang up in 1865 between the streetcar conductor and the poet spanned the years of Whitman’s residence in Washington, D.C., and continued nearly up through Whitman’s death in Camden, in 1892. Yet despite the promi nent role that Doyle played in Whitman’s life, our knowledge of his personal history is incomplete. The following biography fills in some of the missing pieces about this enigmatic figure.1 In so doing, it hopes to give voice to the man John Burroughs hailed as “a mute inglorious Whitman.”2 A Boyhood in Ireland and Passage to America Until now, Doyle’s actual birthday was a mystery to Whitman biographers. -

YEARS OF STORM & STRESS Joseph Matt & Americanism with a commentary and notes by Paul Likoudis on Matt's “A Centenary of Catholic Life in Minnesota” published by The Wanderer, January – August 2012 From January to August 2012, The Wanderer published, and offered commentary, on a remarkable series of 36 articles written by this newspaper's long-serving editor Joseph Matt (1877-1966) in 1950-'51 on Americanism, “the German question,” and subjects related to “Cahenslyism,” named after the German Catholic layman Peter Paul Cahensly, who devoted himself to the aid of German-Catholic immigrants. In this series of articles, Joseph Matt told the German-American Catholics' side of the story of what the late Monsignor George Kelly would call the “Battle for the American Church”; i.e. German Catholic opposition to the nascent modernism in Americanism and the Americanist hierarchy's determination to assimilate German Catholics into the American melting pot. As a sort of prelude to this series, we will enter the field of German-American Catholic historiography with some snips from a paper read by University of Chicago historian Kathleen Neils Conzen at the first Edmund Spevack Memorial Lecture at Harvard University, November 7, 2003, which touches on many of the issues we will see Joseph Matt discussing in that series of 36 articles sixty years ago, as he reflected back on the battles of the of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: “....Catholicism has long seemed like an embarrassing guest at the table of American historiography,” observed Conzen, “best ignored in the hope that it will not make a disturbing fuss. -

PETER GUILDAY March 25, 1884-July 31, 1947 Founder of The Catholic Historical Review Corresponding Member of the Academy of American Franciscan History As many readers of The Americas already know, Monsignor Peter Guilday, professor of American church history at The Catholic Univer sity of America, died in Washington, D. C, on July 31, 1947, at the age of sixty-three. His passing at the end of a long illness brought a dis tinguished career as a scholar and teacher to a close, and silenced the voice of a man who could speak, and did speak, with authority on the history of the Catholic Church in the United States. Monsignor Guilday was clearly the outstanding American historian of his generation trained at the University of Louvain. His doctoral dis sertation, the culmination of years of research, appeared in London in 1914 under the title of The English Colleges and Convents in the Cath olic Low Countries, 1558-1795. He had hoped to investigate other as pects of the history of the Church in the British Isles, but the outbreak of the first World War put an end to his plans, and obliged him in Octo ber 1914 to return home. He now accepted an instructorship in Church history at The Catholic University of America, and began at this time the association with our pontifical university which was to last until his death. With the active support of the rector, Thomas J. Shahan, he founded The Catholic His torical Review in 1915, and served as its principal editor until his retire ment from the editorial board in 1941. -

Dolan Kenrick-Glennon Seminary Archdiocese of St. Louis Archbishop Gerety Lecture at Seton Hall University, October 15, 1992 "Hence we cheerfully sent one who should represent Our Person..." wrote Pope Leo XII in his encyclical Longinqua Oceani1 to the Church of the United States, January 6, 1895, referring to the appointment of the first apostolic delegate, Archbishop Francesco Satolli, just two years previous. That January 21, 1993, will be the centennial of this event suggested the topic of this year's Archbishop Gerety Lecture, "A Century of Papal Representation in the United States." Thank you for the invitation to be part of this distinguished lecture series. For the record, I have dedicated this meagre effort to the preeminent church historian of the United States, Monsignor John Tracy Ellis, my teacher, mentor and friend who, at 87, is now recuperating from hip surgery in Washington, D.C. May the Lord of Truth whom he has served so diligently be close to him in his recovery. I propose to develop this topic under five points. First, I will treat the way the Holy See approached America prior to Archbishop Satolli's appointment; secondly, I will consider the give-and-take surrounding his nomination in 1893; then will come a staccato-like overview of the comings-and-goings of his 10 successors; fourthly, I will take a look at just what, in general, the delegates have done, offering two examples of their activities; and, finally, I will conclude with a segment on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the government of the United States. -

These themes are united to a program of reform touching on doctrinal, ecclesiological, and pastoral matters; as well as attendant wider theological, philosophical, and affective issues. However, the general unsystematicity of both these readings and Francis’ texts themselves makes it difficult to receive those texts in a way that integrates these various themes. -

The dissertation draws on decrees of the Council of Trent, papal encyclicals, pastoral letters, theological treatises, and Catholic interpretation of Judeo-Christian scripture to demonstrate that the Church’s beliefs manifestly shaped its African American ministry. -

Hosffman Ospino, PhD Assistant Professor of Theology and Religious Education Boston College Email: [email protected] 2013 REA Annual Meeting, Nov 8–10 Nineteenth Century Debates about the Need for Catholic Schools as a Legitimate Alternative to the Public School System in the United States: Lessons from Yesterday, Implications for Today Major debates about the need for Catholic schools during the nineteenth century capture the passion and tensions around the question of what it means to be Catholic and American. In this essay we look at two major case studies that bring together a polyphony of voices addressing the question of why Catholic schools are needed―or not―within the overall American experiment. The essay shows how key debates leading to the establishment of the largest network of schools sponsored by one single denomination in the country was the result of four streams of arguments: philosophical/theological, educational, political, and cultural. The essay offers important insights for similar conversations as well as for others that remain unfinished as Catholics and other Christian continue to wrestle with the idea of denominational education in the secular State. -

Bishop McQuaid And Archbishop Ireland: School Controversy Or Otherwise? by Jeffrey S. Tunnicliff Theological College Rev. David D. Thayer, S.S. December 28, 2008 I. Introduction Today, many Catholic parochial schools are facing declining enrollment and lack of funding. This naturally leads to the question, ‘Do we really need parochial schools?’ This is not a new question. In fact, the necessity of parochial schools was a central issue facing the Catholic Church in America during the Nineteenth Century. It seemingly strikes at the core of the Catholic School Controversy that erupted in the 1890’s. Two of the leading bishops in the controversy representing opposing sides were Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid of Rochester and Archbishop John Ireland of St. Paul. McQuaid enjoyed the support of Archbishop Michael Corrigan of New York while Ireland had the support of Cardinal Gibbons of Baltimore. Beginning in the 1870’s McQuaid was a regular lecturer on the need for Catholic Schools. Ireland was a bishop of a ‘frontier’ diocese and an avid supporter of Americanization. He sought to help Catholic immigrants become good American citizens and thus saw the ideal as Catholics attending public schools. For Ireland, parochial schools were only necessary because the public schools failed in their responsibilities. A controversy is never simple. This paper will examine the controversy between Archbishop Ireland and Bishop McQuaid. It will present the background on each bishop and the circumstances that helped shape their position on the need for Catholic Schools. In order to do this, we must first understand the setting of the Catholic Church in America leading up to the eruption of the controversy in the 1890’s. -
