Samantha Armytage Axed from Hosting Or Attending the Australia for UNHCR Charity Event After Kristin Davis Sketch Samantha Armytage axed from hosting or attending the Australia For UNHCR charity event after Kristin Davis sketch FEBRUARY 12, 20161:57PM Sam Armytage axed as host of UNHCR fundraiser Michael MorrowNews Corp Australia Network SAMANTHA Armytage has been uninvited from a charity event after yesterday’s Sex and the City skit on Sunrise with Kristin Davis backfired. The surprise decision was announced on the show this morning, after yesterday’s segment featuring the Sex and the City star drew widespread criticism from around the world and from the star herself. “I was asked to MC that event and conduct a Q and A with Kristin on stage and I immediately accepted,” Armytage said. “Since our interview yesterday, organisers have asked Sam not to host the event now or to attend it at all, that was unexpected,” Kochie added. “I always was, and I still am, very happy to host this fundraiser for such an important cause,” an upset Armatage concluded. The Sunrise hosts finished by saying they have the “utmost respect” for Kristen Davis and the Australia For UNHCR and wished them luck. “It was meant to be a bit of fun,” Kochie said. Kristin Davis took to Twitter to express her displeasure with the skit. Picture: TwitterSource:Twitter After an initial chat about Davis’s work with UNHCR, on yesterday’s show Kochie and Armytage proceeded to ask numerous questions about her TV series, which wrapped filming in 2004. The Hollywood star appeared clearly uncomfortable when they threw to a clip of her as Charlotte, her character on the show. “No, no, no, no, no, no!” Davis said, pleading for the vision to be stopped. It only got worse for Davis when she was coaxed into a skit with Armytage and fellow Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and Edwina Bartholemew. “This is a first, ladies, I just want you to know that I have never done this,” Davis said as they awkwardly read their way through a scene from the show. Kristin Davis subjected to painful sketch on Sunrise Davis was quick to take to social media about her displeasure. Before the end of today’s show all five Sunrise hosts made time to apologise to Davis. “We spoke about her important work in this area for several minutes, at the start of the interview,” Koch said, referring to UNHCR. “Unfortunately everyone forgot about that bit and just focused on the end of the segment where we did a Sex and the City sketch. “Kristin was apparently offended and we are very sorry if you are,” he added. “We certainly weren’t trying to poke fun at the show or its stars, really we were just poking fun at us,” Armytage said. The Sunrise team then explained how much support they‘d given the UNHCR in the past, before revealing the charity’s surprise decision. Today Show host Lisa Wilkinson was quick to jump on the back of the Sunrise fiasco with this tweet. Looks like Davis will be giving Brekky Central a miss on her next trip. http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/tv/morning-shows/samantha-armytage-axed-from- hosting-or-attending-unhcr-charity-event-after-kristen-davis-sketch/news- story/6aa65eee877e52875bd049073f49fef9 .

RECOGNISING OUR HEROES Picture: Dean Lewins/AAP 16 pages of heartfelt messages Thankhonouring the brave men &you women who came when we called 02 HONOURING OUR HEROES “I saw a young man, face blackened, and asked to shake his hand” I was in Mallacoota with my family during the peak of the fires and witnessed first-hand the mighty work of the CFA. The trucks never stopped coming to the pier to refill day and night to return and fight the huge fires blazing all around us. We were frightened and felt so helpless. We managed to talk to a few of the fireys from a distance and had Whenasimple our grandchildren wave and clap as others drove back out to continue the fight. I passed one young man walking down the street one afternoon, face and hands blackened from dirt and ash, and asked to shake his hand to say thank you. He asked if I was a local and he told me I needed to thank all the fireys who came to help from outside, because Mallacoota wouldn’t have survived without them. I saw trucks from Eltham, Kangaroo Ground, Scoresby, Lara and places I’m not even familiar with. How grateful I am thankyoudoesnot to all those men and women firefighters — they saved the township of Mallacoota and our lives. They are all heroes — dedicated, selfless, courageous heroes — and just saying ‘thank you’ doesn’t seem enough. I hold them with such high esteem and God bless them all. Digitally Altered: Making News in the 21st Century Caja Louise Gilbert 0000-0003-3920-1662 PhD Arts February 2020 Faculty of Arts, School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Melbourne This thesis is being submitted in total fulfilment of the degree. ABSTRACT Audience research demonstrates that online news has become a dominant source of news in Australia, especially for people under 40 years of age. Australians now obtain their news from online sites – such as Yahoo!7 News and news.com.au – in preference to traditional newspapers. Such sites are very important to the future of news journalism, yet they are vastly understudied – especially in Australia. This thesis, based on a study of a major digital aggregated online news organisation in Australia, Yahoo!7 News, investigated the question: How can the study of an Australian aggregated news site (Yahoo!7 News) contribute to our understanding of digital aggregated news production? This research project collected data from observations at Yahoo!7 News, interviews with the Yahoo!7 newsworkers and a content analysis of the Yahoo!7 News site and the Yahoo!7 social networking platforms (i.e. Facebook and Twitter). The data indicates that there were three dominant issues at Yahoo!7 News related to the role of the newsworkers and newsroom practices, the production of news content and the newsworkers’ perceptions of their audience. Firstly, the newsworkers acted as gatekeepers, tightly controlling the outflow of news by limiting the involvement of the Yahoo!7 News audience with the content they generated. Secondly, success was perceived through a prism of the ‘race to be first’, which caused newsworkers to prioritise and value speed and immediacy.
