We combined three sampling meth- ods: large plots, transects and pit-fall traps. We recorded 12 frog species associ- ated with forest leaf-litter: Adenomera marmorata Steindachmer 1867, Leptodac- tylus ocellatus (Linnaeus 1758), and Physalaemus signifer (Girard 185) (Lepto- dactylidae); Eleutherodactylus binotatus (Spix 1824), E. guentheri (Steindachmer 1864), E. octavioi Bokermann 1965, and Euparkerella cochranae Izechsohn 1988 (Brachycephalidae); Proceratophrys boiei (Wied-Neuwied 1821) (Cycloramphi- dae); Chaunus ornatus Spix 1824 and Chaunus ictericus Spix 1824 (Bufonidae); Chiasmocleis carvalhoi Cruz et al. 1997 (Microhylidae); and Scinax aff. x-signatus (Spix 1824) (Hylidae). The area had a relatively high overall density (8.4 ind/100 m2) of leaf-litter frogs compared to other Atlantic forest areas. -

Morphologically, the species resembles E. brasiliensis and E. cochranae, but differs from them in acoustic features. Relative to its congeners, the new species is characterized by: (1) medium size; (2) slender body; (3) narrow head; (4) long Finger IV, Toes I and V; (5) tubercles of the hand and foot protuberant; (6) duration of advertisement call longer than three seconds; (7) pulse-section rate slower than two sections/second; and (8) exhibiting pulse clusters. -

Lynch^ In 1932 Hampton Parker described Etipsophus wettsteini from the Peruvian Andes. In discussing the systematic position of this species he pointed out the then ominous possibiHty that Eleuthero- dactyltis, Etipsoplnis, and Sijnlwphus might eventually be merged into a single genus. Parker envisioned a "Borborocoetes" group of Eleutherodactijlus as having given rise to the annectant SyrrJwpus simonsii, S. festae, and Eupsophiis icettsteini, and that this complex of species had given rise to the more southern Etipsoplnis (espe- cially E. penianus). Although he separated the species into two genera, Parker evidently viewed them as an annectant generic group. Subsequently, these three species and several others were gathered into the genus Niceforonia (Lynch 1971). 1971 ten of in the Lynch ( ) recognized genera leptodactylids Telmatobiinae . Four of the trilpe Eleutherodactylinii ( ) genera {Eleutherodactijlus, Sminthilhis, Syrrliophus, and Tomodoctyhis) were characterized, in part, by the possession of digital discs and the associated T-shaped terminal phalanges. The other six genera {Amhlyphrynus, Euparkerella, Holoaden, Hylactophryne, Ischnoc- nema and Niceforonia) do not have digital discs and with the ex- ception of Euparkerella (which has complex terminal phalanges) have knobbed terminal phalanges. Only three eleutherodactyline genera have species represented in the Andean frog fauna at elevations above 2000 meters. The new species is characterized by its large body size, large head, moderately bulging dorsal glands, limbs long and slender, a deeply dark dorsal coloration, and dark ventral surface with a light abdominal blotch of variable size. The new species expands the range of the genus 200 km eastward in Brazil. We examined types and specimens of most species, reviewed morphological and bioacoustic characteristics, and performed molecular analyses on the largest phylogeny of Bryophryne species to date. We performed phylogenetic analysis of a dataset of concatenated sequences from fragments of the 16S rRNA and 12S rRNA genes, the protein-coding gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI), the nuclear protein-coding gene recombination-activating protein 1 (RAG1), and the tyrosinase precursor (Tyr). The three species are immediately distinguishable from all other species of Bryophryne by the presence of a tympanic membrane and annulus, and by males having median subgular vocal sacs and emitting advertisement calls. -

In the state of Rio de Janeiro it is presently reduced to less than 20% of its original extension, and faunal lists are needed for several areas.
