Westminster Theological Journal 68 (2006): 71-83 The Talmud’s Two Jubilees and Their Relevance to the Date of the Exodus The Babylonian Talmud mentions two, and only two, occasions for the observance of a Jubilee. The question of whether there actually were Jubilees at the times specified, or whether these passages reflect a later projection of ideas back into a previous age, is a matter of some importance. It bears on the question of when Leviticus was written, because many scholars date the composition of Leviticus, particularly of the so-called “H” or Holiness Code that established the Jubilee and Sabbatical years (Lev 17–26), to exilic or post-exilic times. An exilic or post-exilic date for the Holiness Code would be difficult to maintain if it could be shown that Sabbatical years or Jubilee years were observed before the exile, since the observation of such rituals in the ancient Near East always presupposes their written codification. One way to evaluate whether the two Jubilees mentioned in the Talmud were genuine historical events is to examine the dates assigned to them. The two passages are in b. ‘Arak. 12a, mentioning a Jubilee in the time of Ezekiel, and in b. Meg. 14b, mentioning a Jubilee in the time of Josiah. The ‘Arakin passage is as follows: “Is it not written: In the five and twentieth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten. Now which is the year the beginning of which falls on the tenth of Tishri? Say: This is the jubilee year.” 1 The argument the Talmud presents here is that the verse quoted (Ezek 40:1) gave the day as both “the beginning of the year” (Rosh HaShanah or New Year’s Day) and also as the tenth of the month. -

Marba C. Josephson, editor of the Improvement Era and general board member, described the goals as “aiding the LDS girl to gain a testimony of the gospel through wholesome lesson work and spiritualized recreation.”1 Church leaders have long recognized the vital role that this auxiliary fills in helping adolescent girls to develop testimonies of the Savior and to become faithful, covenant-keeping women. The programs and procedures have changed to meet the needs of an ever-growing Church population and to help young women face the chal- lenges of their particular eras. -

Esplin Traveling along Illinois’ scenic Highway 96, the modern visitor to Nauvoo steps back in time. Horse-drawn carriages pass a bustling blacksmith shop and brick furnace. Tourists stroll through manicured gardens, venturing into open doorways where missionary guides recreate life in a religious city on a bend in the Mississippi River during the mid-1840s. The picture is one of prosper- ity, presided over by a stately temple monument on a bluff overlooking the community. Within minutes, if they didn’t know it already, visitors to the area quickly learn about the Latter-day Saint founding of the City of Joseph. While portraying an image of peace, students of the history of Nauvoo know a different tale, however. Unlike other historically recreated villages across the country, this one has a dark past. For the most part, the homes, and most important the temple itself, did not peacefully pass from builder to pres- ent occupant, patiently awaiting renovation and restoration. Rather, they lay abandoned, persisting only in the memory of a people who left them in search of safety in a high mountain desert more than thirteen hundred miles away. Firmly established in the tops of the mountains, their posterity returned more than a century later to create a monument to their ancestral roots. Much of the present-day religious, political, economic, and social power of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traces its roots to Nauvoo, Illinois. -

Thanks to Karakoc, our guide on a Culinary Backstreets tour of the food-obsessed Turkish capital, we do. Hamburg-born and Istanbul-raised — “I see the city like you do, as an outsider, but I can explain it as an insider” — she is both gastro- nome and cultural interpreter on a day-long binge spanning both shores of the Bosphorus. We meet in Karakoy beneath the Roman- esque Galata Tower on a chilly Saturday morning. With her fine features, gamine-cut red hair and theatrical personality, Karakoc reminds me of Shirley MacLaine. “You will see!” she cries as we set off through the alleyways of Turkey’s biggest hardware market, Persembe Pazari. “There will be no elegant restaurants. We will be eat- ing very simple local foods. We want you to have a real, personal experience.” After our quick “commuter breakfast” at Kursunlu Han of tea and simit, the chewy Turkish bagels glazed with grape molasses much needed pick-me-up, Turkish coffee, and and crusted in sesame seeds, we head to the more insights into local lore. -

This year witnessed the Mongol invasion from the East, defeating the Germans and Poles, as well as the year that saw the new ascendancy of the Islamic power. The turn of events was perceived by Nachmanides as the appearance of the "fearsome and terrible beast" in Daniel's vision (Chapter 7) that preceded the coming of the Son of Man, the messianic figure in Jewish apocalypticism. Nachmanides1 portrays the Islamic empire as a "powerful kingdom that is closer to the truth than the former ones," referring to the other theriomorphic empires in Daniel's prophecy. Islam was perceived by Spanish Jewry to be a monotheistic faith, with emphasis on God's unity. Jews faced both Muslims and Christians on the Iberian peninsula, and they were also aware of the distinction between them. -

Is the Mormon star KOLOB a location for “Thou Fount of Every Blessing?” SATAN is certainly a master at using MUSIC to sugar-coat heresy and introduce it into the minds of those who move in professing Christian circles. A lovely hymn that I have sung over my years as a Christian is ‘Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing’. So, perhaps you’re wondering to yourself, what’s this ‘If You Could Hie to Kolob’. Well it relates to something that is foreign to the original hymn but that has been inserted into the rendition. Perhaps like me you would need to find out what ‘hie’ means’, well it means ‘go quickly’. Then secondly you might wonder what is this ‘KOLOB’ that you might want to ‘hie’ to. Let me quote from pages 32-33 of ‘Mormons Answered Verse by Verse’ by David Reed and John Farkas. Just by way of additional help, Mormonism recognises 4 authoritative books, The Book of Mormon, The Bible, Doctrine and Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price. This last one is actually a collection of smaller writings such as ‘The Book of Moses’ and ‘The Book of Abraham’. Keeping that in mind let’s see what we can we learn about KOLOB? Mr Reed and Mr Farkas wrote – ‘The “Book of Abraham” is unique in that it features three cuts or facsimiles of the Egyptian papyrus from which Joseph Smith claimed he “translated” it… It is described as “The writings of Abraham while he was in Egypt, called the “Book of Abraham”, written by his own hand upon papyrus”. -

Esplin “ n great deeds something abides,” reminisced Joshua Lawrence IChamberlain, a famed Civil War colonel. “On great fields some- thing stays. Forms change and pass; bodies disappear, but spirits linger, to consecrate ground for the vision-place of souls. And reverent men and women from afar, and generations that know us not and that we know not of, heart-drawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for them, shall come to this deathless field to ponder and dream; And lo! the shadow of a mighty presence shall wrap them in its bosom, and the power of the vision pass into their souls.”1 For Latter-day Saints, the historic Salt Lake Tabernacle has become one of those sacred sites—a consecrated hall where “something abides” and “spirits linger” and where modern visitors are wrapped in “the shadow of a mighty presence” while visions of the Restoration “pass into their souls.” President Gordon B. Hinckley summarized the influence the Scott C. Esplin is an assistant professor of Church history and doctrine at Brigham Young University. 69 Salt Lake City: The Place Which God Prepared Tabernacle has had on the Church: “The Spirit of the Lord has been in this structure. It is sacred unto us.”2 With the construction of larger and more modern conference halls, the Salt Lake Tabernacle stands today as a silent witness to its pioneer past. Having undergone significant transformations throughout its life, the building serves not only as a monument to pioneer greatness but also as an example of changes in the Church’s history. -

My lifelong interest in the human heart took an unexpected turn in April 1984, when I was called to leave the operating room of the hospital and enter the upper room of the temple. There I became an ordained Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. I did not seek such a call but have humbly tried to be worthy of that trust and privilege of being His representative, now hoping to mend hearts spiritually as I previously did surgically. So I come to you as one who has been called, sustained, and ordained—one of the twelve special witnesses of our Lord and Master.
