I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Matt 16:18-19 THE GREAT COMMISSION All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. Matt 28:18-20 THE MAGISTERIUM The teaching authority of the Catholic Church regarding matters of Faith and Morals. DEPOSIT OF FAITH The set of truths that Jesus taught, and the Holy Spirit revealed. Sacred Sacred Tradition + Scripture Magisterium The Deposit of Faith Sacred Sacred Tradition + Scripture MAGISTERIAL FUNCTION Explains Interprets Reveals* Deposit of Faith Guards Protects * The truth doesn’t change, but over time, at the promptings of the Holy Spirit, our understanding of it deepens. SACRED SCRIPTURE Correct interpretation depends on extensive knowledge of the culture at the time, and the style and literary genre being used by the writer. It requires understanding of the original language used. Scripture is written in multiple literary genres and three languages, Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. The Magisterium interprets and reveals the meaning of Sacred Scripture. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all I told you. John 14:26 3-FOLD MISSION Teach The Magisterium teaches only truths handed down to us from the Apostles. Sanctify – Attend Mass on all Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. – Confess our sins at least once a year. – Receive the Eucharist during the Easter season. – Observe the Church’s days of fasting and abstinence. – Help provide for the needs of the Church. The Holy Father, Peter’s successor, when speaking “ex cathedra” (from the Chair of Peter). The Bishops, the Apostles’ successors, when they gather as an ecumenical council in concert with the Pope. How many times in Church history has a Pope spoken “ex cathedra”? 2 Mary’s Immaculate Conception Pope Pius IX – 1854 Mary’s Immaculate Conception Pope Pius IX – 1854 Mary’s Assumption into Heaven Pope Pius XII – 1950 DOGMAS Dogmas are teachings infallibly proposed by the Extraordinary Magisterium as divinely revealed. Divinely revealed Solemnly declared Infallible Irrevocable Binding DOGMA EXAMPLES • There are three persons in one Divine Essence. • The body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus are truly present in the Eucharist. • Baptism is necessary for salvation. • The dead will rise again on the last day with their bodies. • Grace can be increased by good works. DOCTRINE All teachings of the Church in matters of faith and morals. ORDINARY MAGISTERIUM ORDINARY MAGISTERIUM Teachings on faith and morals not likely to change over time. ▪ Non-infallible: Teachings subject to limited error; reformable. ▪ Infallible: Universally held teachings over a long period of time. HOW MUCH DOCTRINE MUST WE BELIEVE? All of it! MUST WE ASSENT? “It is sometimes claimed that dissent from the Magisterium is totally compatible with being a ‘good Catholic’ and poses no obstacle to the reception of the sacraments. This is a grave error that challenges the teaching office of the Bishops of the United States and elsewhere.” Pope Saint John Paul II TWO LEVELS OF ASSENT Infallible Doctrine Assent of faith (the heart) Beyond all doubt Non-infallible Doctrine Assent of intellect (mind) Beyond reasonable doubt DISCIPLINARY DECREES Do not pertain to faith and morals. Are not divinely revealed. Are not doctrine or dogma. Not binding. Example: Priests cannot marry. PRUDENTIAL JUDGMENTS Do not pertain to faith and morals. Example: Comments on the environment. HOWEVER … • We must not contradict what has already been defined. • We must be willing to submit our interpretations to the final judgment of the Magisterium! THE LAST WORD We get our faith from the teachings of Jesus and the Apostles. We, the Catholic Church, did not make the faith. We received it, from Jesus Christ. We receive it as He gave it. We do not change it to suit ourselves! Practices Table Discussion Beliefs Beliefs & Prayer RCIA Journey Journey of Faith RCIA What struck you or touched you in this presentation? Dei Verbum • CCC 51 "It pleased God, in his goodness and wisdom, to reveal himself and to make known the mystery of his will. His will was that men should have access to the Father, through Christ, the Word made flesh, in the Holy Spirit, and thus become sharers in the divine nature.“ Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) Deposit of Faith • The Catholic Church defines the "Deposit of Faith" as the teachings of the Catholic Church that are handed down since the time of the Apostles through Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. These two are known as the "Deposit of Faith. • It is clear, therefore, that Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture and the teaching authority of the Church, in accord with God's most wise design, are so linked and joined together that one cannot stand without the others, and that all together and each in its own way under the action of the one Holy Spirit contribute effectively to the salvation of souls. Dei Verbum • 2 Tim 1:14 - By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you. Sacred Scripture • The books of both the Old and New Testaments in their entirety are sacred because written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they have God as their author and have been handed on as such to the Church herself. • Bible reading is for Catholics. The Church encourages Catholics to make reading the Bible part of their daily prayer lives. Reading these inspired words, people grow deeper in their relationship with God and come to understand their place in the community God has called them to. • Reading isn't enough. If Scripture remains just words on a page, our work is not done. We need to meditate on the message and put it into action in our lives. Only then can the word be "living and effective."(Hebrews 4:12). • 2 Tim. 3:16-17 - All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
