Chapter Viii Active and Objective Tradition
CHAPTER VIII ACTIVE AND OBJECTIVE TRADITION The distinction between active and objective tradition can be traced back to Franzelin. He makes the distinction in his Tractatus de divina traditione. There he writes, in the exposition of thesis I, that the objective sense of tradition refers to that which is handed down, doctrines or institutions transmitted by our ancestors.1 The active sense of tradition, on the other hand, refers to the process by which tradition is handed on. It includes the whole series and complex of actions and means by which doctrine, whether theoretical or practical, is propagated and transmitted to us.2 Doctrines and institutions form objective tradition. Active tradition is composed of the acts and the means which bring objective tradition to us. The acts refer to a process; the means signify an institution by which the acts are accomplished. It is remarkable that the term objective tradition is counterposed to active tradition. One might expect the corresponding term to be passive tradition, rather than objective tradition. This is a point we shall take up later.3 For the present, it suffices to see the basis of the distinction between something handed on and the act of handing it on. The distinction between active and objective tradition has been described so often by Catholic theologians since Franzelin that it has become, in Mackey’s word, axiomatic.4 It is an axiom because the theologians of the period between the two Vatican councils found it worthy of general acceptance. It is not axiomatic, however, if by that we mean self-evident. -

Is it really all that significant?” We will look at that question in these notes. I. Catholic Teaching Magisterium vs. Protestant Scripture Alone The Catholic church teaches that the Pope and cardinals can set official teaching about things not addressed in Scripture. This teaching is authoritative, binding, must be believed, and must be followed. It is as authoritative as the Word of Christ. Protestants take Scripture alone as their guide and rule. II. Catholic Scripture + Tradition vs. Protestant Scripture Alone The past teachings of the Catholic church are held in such high regard that they become as authoritative as Scripture. The Catholic church “does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone. Both Scripture and tradition must be accepted and honored with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence.” [1] With the point above, we have a very clear division between the beliefs of Catholics and Protestants. The reformed view of the Bible is that it and it alone is the Word of God. It is the only authoritative rule of faith and practice for the believer. There is no peer. To the Catholic officials, however, tradition and the teaching ministry of the church are peer authorities with the Bible. This is why the Bible has not been the center focus of teaching or of religious services in the Catholic church or education. III. -

Easter has come and gone, as it does every year. Granted, it was strangely different this year, as we weren’t able to gather together physically to mark the anniversary of the resurrection of our Lord. But the basic pattern on our calendar wasn’t any different from years past. We went through Lent, with a slow, deliberate 40-day journey toward the cross; at the end of Lent we experienced the fast-paced intense spiritual roller coaster ride through Holy Week with Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. Every year there’s this build-up to Easter, culminating in the glorious proclamation of the victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death, and the eternal implications that his resurrection has for us. But now, what? What do we do with the Easter message? Jesus is risen from the dead. Now, what? Don’t you get the sense that there’s some unfinished business that needs our attention? If you read through all four gospels, you will notice that none of them ends at the empty tomb. Every gospel (even the traditional short ending of the Gospel According to Mark) has some aspect of sending forth of those first witnesses to the resurrection, to proclaim what they had seen. All four gospels remind us that the resurrection of Jesus is not just good news for us to experience; indeed, with the privilege of witnessing and embracing the resurrection comes the responsibility of passing on the Good News to the rest of the world. -

Morgan, B.S., M.A. Marquette University, 2013 In this dissertation I argue that Cyril of Alexandria’s interpretation of “spiritual circumcision” provides invaluable insight into his complex doctrine of salvation. Spiritual Circumcision – or Circumcision by the Spirit -- is a recurring theme throughout his extensive body of exegetical literature, which was written before the Nestorian controversy (428). When Cyril considers the meaning and scope of circumcision, he recognizes it as a type that can describe a range of salvific effects. For him, circumcision functions as a unifying concept that ties together various aspects of salvation such as purification, sanctification, participation, and freedom. Soteriology, however, can only be understood in relation to other doctrines. Thus, Cyril’s discussions of circumcision often include correlative areas of theology such as hamartiology and Trinitarian thought. In this way, Cyril’s discussions on circumcision convey what we are saved from, as well as the Trinitarian agency of our salvation. -

KEY WORDS: Ascension, Pentecost, Christology, Pneumatology, Patristics, Trinity. A woman we know recently recalled a powerful memory from her childhood in the early nineteen seventies. Her parents visited a large church in southern California to see an Easter play, and near the end of the drama this little girl witnessed, with a mixture of fear and delight, how Jesus, who was hooked up to a thinly disguised wire, was pulled up into the ceiling. What was all of this about? Why did Jesus go, and how could that possibly be a good thing? Such questions, however, are not reserved to children growing up in the Jesus move ment. Since the New Testament clearly testifies to the ascension of Jesus, theo logians throughout the ages have struggled to grasp its significance for those left behind. Scripture is replete with the antithesis of descent and ascent, and these bibli cal motifs have been indispensable hermeneutical devices throughout the his tory ofthe Christian Church. Following the lead of some early Church Fathers we will attempt to show how they employed the descent-ascent motif as a guiding framework for an exploration of the relationship between the ascension of Jesus and the sending (descent) of the Holy Spirit. -
