September 15: Newsboys Concert 7:00 PM The Community Arts Center welcomes the Newsboys to the stage for their Love Riot tour. Newsboys have defined Christian music for more than two decades, only to blow up expectations as they’ve recreated themselves again and again. September 16: Full Moon Drumming at Dancing Bear Farm 7:00 PM Gather for joyous noise & rhythm-making each month as we watch the sunset in the west and the full moon rise over the eastern horizon. September 17: 20th Anniversary Activities at R. B. Winter State Park Environmental Center 12:00-5:00 PM The Halfway Run Environmental Learning Center will host an open house. Activities taking place throughout the afternoon include a fall scavenger hunt, make & take leaf crafts, demonstrations on natural dyes, paper making, archery, Atlatl, and turkey talking. There will also be talks on rattlers and other reptiles with live animals, a talk on PA mushrooms, and a “Colors of Fall” nature walk. September 17: Canoe Susquehanna Guided Kayak Trip 1:00 PM Enjoy the first hints of seasonal change during our 7 mile Peace of the Susquehanna guided kayak trip. This trip is 7 river miles from Montgomery to Watsontown with an island rest stop mid-way. September 17: Shotgunn in Concert at the Ned Smith Center 7:30 PM Shotgunn got its start in the 1970s, playing gigs all over the Lykens Valley. They reunited in the early 2000s, performing benefit concerts of rock and funk hits from the 60s and 70s. September 18: Dam Half Dam Full Trail Held at R. B. Winter State Park and the Bald Eagle State Forest, the Dam Half is a challenging ½ marathon that has expanded to become a dual trail competition to include a marathon. We hope that runners and hikers will continue to enjoy the 13-mile course that takes contestants over single & double track trails with some portions of fire roads. The contestants will be subjected to rocks, mud, downed trees, stumps, roots, woodland creatures and small stream crossings. Competitors will scale challenging ascents with scenic vistas before the final downhill to the finish line! The Dam Full will lead runners and speed hikers’ further out along new trails in Bald Eagle State Forest. September 18: Taber Museum Society Program to Feature Vintage Phonographs and Recordings 2:00 PM James and Joanne Ertel will be recounting Thomas Edison’s invention of the phonograph and playing an assortment of Edison cylinder records, including one of Edison talking, the voice of President William Howard Taft, John Phillip Sousa’s band, and the comic monologues of early twentieth century comedian Cal Stewart. As the Ertel lecture coincides with the third Sunday of the month, there will be no admission charged to tour the rest of the museum on the day of the lecture. September 18-24: Beaver Community Fair Celebrating 88 years of agriculture, food, and country living. Seven day event with exhibits (sewing, photography, school, garden produce, and farm products), truck, tractor pulls and ITTP sled. Kids games (nail driving, pedal pulls, corn shelling, water hauling, and grain bagging), Tug of War, musical events, and rides. Serving Snyder County and surrounding communities, the Beaver Community Fair is a real country fair that celebrates the best of country living since 1928. Admission is $3. Children under 5 are free. September 20: "Skin I'm In: Stories about the Body" (Stories on Tap) 8:00 PM "Skin I’m In: Stories about the Body" is a part of Stories on Tap, a series of ‘community storytelling’ events based in the Susquehanna Valley area. Centered on a certain theme, each event includes a host and an accompanying musician. Audience members may sign up to share true stories related to the event’s theme, and are then eligible to win a prize based on story quality, as well as staying within the 5 minute time limit. September 22: Kick-Off Event for Coal Collections: Local, National, and International Stories The Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University and the Place Studies program of the Bucknell Center for Sustainability and the Environment, are pleased to announce a year-long series of events related to anthracite coal. “Coal Collections: Local, National and International Stories” will include performances, monthly noon-time lectures and panel discussions, films, and guest speakers. The kick-off performance features the Coal Town Rounders and Van Wagner on Thursday, September 22 at 7:30pm. Northeast Pennsylvania-based quartet Coal Town Rounders’ performs a mix of Appalachian music and harmony with bluegrass, performing live around a single microphone. September 24: Linn Conservancy-Sponsored Tour of Stahl Property 10:00 AM The Linn Conservancy will sponsor a visit to its newest protected site, a 243-acre property at 138 Indian Ridge Road. See a variety of habitat--productive cropland, woodland in various stages of maturity, meadow, and wetland, which will now be permanently, protected preserving agricultural land, scenic beauty, and natural features. Participants, who are advised to wear long pants and sturdy shoes, are asked to drive behind Mr. Stahl's gray barn toward a cabin where a reception will be held with coffee and light refreshments. Now-October 30: Corn Maze at Ard's Farm & Wine Tasting in the Maze Join us in the corn maze as Ard’s Farm celebrates 25 years! Not up for the “big” adventure? Shoot the corn cannon, play in the corn bin, race the pumpkins in the punchin’ pumpkin maze, ride the slide, dig for fossils, and take a hayride to the pumpkin patch (starting September 24). Now-October 30: Dale/Engle/Walker House Tours, Exhibits, Soap-making Demo, and Concert The Dale/Engle/Walker House will offer tours and exhibits. Visitors to this historic property may take a guided tour of the house with furnished original hearth, the wagon shed with vintage tools and farm equipment, and the milk house with dairy display. Current exhibits are "Milkin' It: Union County Dairy History", and "Union County Collects." The House will be open every Sunday afternoon through October.
