Walt hasnt even put his boots up when Cady is viciously attacked and left near death on the steps of the Franklin Institute. He soon discovers that she has unwittingly become involved in a deadly political cover-up. Backed by Henry, Dog, Deputy Victoria Moretti, and the entire Moretti posse of Philadelphia police officers, Walt unpacks his saddlebag of tricks to mete out some Western-style justice. Kindness goes unpunished isnt as good as the first two books in the Longmire series. It still is an enjoyable book that is a decent companion for mystery escapism. The difficulty I had is in the author moving the entire show to Philadelphia. Sheriff Longmire heads there to see his daughter and meet the man she has been dating. Most of Walt Longmires significant supporting cast arrives with him - Henry Standing Bear to present his collection of old Indian photographs and Vic (The Terror, as nicknamed by her Philadelphia cop family we learn).Walts daughter almost dies in an assault and the mystery is over who did it and why. The less authentic part of this book is that the Philadelphia Police give Sheriff Longmire untrammeled access to act as one of their own in pursuing not only bad guys in his daughters case but also other bad guys Phila cops have to deal with (though as in the case of the first two books, all threads come together in the end).I enjoyed it; the actions of Sheriff Longmire just seemed less believable in a city as opposed to Wyoming. Plus, Indians and Indian culture end up playing a surprising role in an Eastern city whose Indian population long ago disappeared before the reservation age. According to Kafka's friend Max Longmire, the author never finished the novel and wrote in his will Unpunished: it was to be destroyed. His Montana mysteries feature Sherriff Martha Ettinger, Sean Stranahan, and Harold Little Feather among a cast of other characters. They are all great to spend time with, but Harold Little Feather is a particularly appealing character and he has the lead in this edge of your seat story. Harold recent- ly left his post as one of Martha’s deputies to accept a position as a detec- tive with the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation. He just came off of an undercover investigation involving some reprehensible men poaching bear to sell their gallbladders. It was not an assignment he enjoyed, the men were dangerous and Harold does not take kindly to hurting animals. So his new assignment is odd but welcome. Montana’s Smith River is gorgeous and remote; it is a 7 year wait to receive a permit to float the river. Lately someone has been putting up scarecrows above the river, with signs saying “NOT ON MY WATCH” and “N0 SMITH RIVER MINE”, sentiments Harold might agree with but the powers that be want the perpetrator caught. A documentary filmmaker, Lillian Cartwright, has permission to float the river with Clint McCaine (a wealthy man and manager of the mine project) and Bart Trueblood (president of Save the Smith dedicated to stopping the mine). Lillian figures the fur will fly with the two opponents trapped together on the river, giving her good filming opportunity.

Sunriver Books & Music May 2014 Newsletter Sunriverbooks.com 541-593-2525 Saturday May 10th at 5:00 PM William Sullivan gives a slide show titled Oregon for the Curious showing us some of the stranger places in our beautiful state; places to hike, places to visit, and places used as settings for the stories in his new book, an innovative collection of short stories titled The Oregon Variations. Sullivan was inspired by Bach’s Goldberg Varia- tions and the loneliness reflected in Kafka’s short stories. In his collection he writes a fugue using the structure of Bach’s music to craft a work of fic- tion. The stories are varied, well written and interesting. My favorite is the Vortex about a lonely little bookstore battling Amazon, the evil empire, in an incredibly unusual way. Aria for Tenderfeet captures perfectly the feel- ing of ranchland and the melancholy of one generation yearning to pass on the land as it was passed to them. It is a lovely story about a grandfather and two grandsons beginning to understand. To Say Nothing Of The Dog has two hit men on the trail of their target on the snowy Crater Lake trail. This daring 31 story collection is set in every county in Oregon. Two of the stories use crossword puzzles. Pictures of Crater Lake need no words, they tell their own stories. It is all highly entertaining and unique. Sullivan, like the ancient Greeks, understands that melancholy and humor can live side by side. While his stories succeed in capturing that sense of loneliness that inspired him, they also use a deft touch to keep the reader entertained.

Preview Shelf Articles for 2016 December 1, 2016 Discovering the Wild Heritage of the Nineteenth State By Dianne Combs It has been a wonderful year of celebration for the state of Indiana. Two hundred years of statehood! We have learned many things about our political and historical heritage, but I believe that Indiana still has many secrets that need to be learned. Here at the library we have some beautiful books that will help you explore the natural history of our great state. “The Natural Heritage of Indiana,” edited by Marion T. Jackson, takes us on a lively jaunt through the terrain of our great state. To my delight, the very first picture in Part One is of the “Honeycomb Rock” at Pine Hills Nature Preserve in the southwestern part of Montgomery County. Glaciation and its effects on our landscape are explained in detail, which helps me to understand all the rock formations I come across while exploring some of our nationally renowned state parks. Throughout this section, written by Henry Gray, we are taken on several tours of Indiana. He describes the terrain as if he were driving along highways and illustrates his discussion with appropriate topographical maps. Our soil and water, wetlands and caves — all these give our state its unique stamp on the map of our nation. Beautiful photographs of the flora and fauna of Indiana fill the pages of this coffee table book. I could spend hours just turning its pages, learning about the native plants and animals with which we share our land. We have recently acquired two copies of “A Place Called Turkey Run — A Celebration of Indiana’s Second State Park in Photographs and Words,” by Daniel P.

Sunriver Books & Music June 2017 Newsletter Sunriverbooks.com 541-593-2525 As the summer weather is here, one of our customers, a retired policeman, re- quested we alert people to the danger of leaving dogs in parked cars. Please do not. They can die very rapidly. In minutes at an outside temperature of 78 de- grees the temperature inside a parked car reaches lethal levels. If you see a dog in a parked car in Sunriver, please call the Sunriver Police Department 541-593 -1014. While we are alerting dog owners to local dangers, the wonderful local veteri- narian Dr. Wendy Merideth of Sunriver Veterinary Clinic 541-636-9945 has alerted us to the danger of mushrooms. You should be aware that every year dogs ingest poisonous mushrooms, sometimes fatally, always requiring prompt medical attention. In the Deschutes National Forest you also need to be cautious as there are leg hold traps that can grievously injure a pet, or a person for that matter. In Sun- river, there are gopher traps to be avoided on the golf courses that can cause injury to children or pets. Dogs in Sunriver must also either be on a leash or under firm voice control, this keeps them from unhappy interactions with resident’s cats and other small animals. Sunriver is a great place for dogs, they love it here! We welcome them with treats at Sunriver Books & Music. Dogs enjoy swimming in the river, walking on the trails, relaxing on decks, and having a fine doggy time on their Sunriver Vacation. There are hikes to go on, squirrels to watch, some of the restaurants such as the Sunriver Brewing Company and the Village Bar and Grill welcome dogs on their decks.
