Sunriver Books & Music July 2018 Newsletter Sunriverbooks.com 541-593-2525 Craig Johnson Depth of Winter Walt Longmire September 9th, sign up to attend Saturday July 7 at 5:00 PM Keith McCafferty returns for A Death in Eden. His Montana mysteries feature Sherriff Martha Ettinger, Sean Stranahan, and Harold Little Feather among a cast of other characters. They are all great to spend time with, but Harold Little Feather is a particularly appealing character and he has the lead in this edge of your seat story. Harold recent- ly left his post as one of Martha’s deputies to accept a position as a detec- tive with the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation. He just came off of an undercover investigation involving some reprehensible men poaching bear to sell their gallbladders. It was not an assignment he enjoyed, the men were dangerous and Harold does not take kindly to hurting animals. So his new assignment is odd but welcome. Montana’s Smith River is gorgeous and remote; it is a 7 year wait to receive a permit to float the river. Lately someone has been putting up scarecrows above the river, with signs saying “NOT ON MY WATCH” and “N0 SMITH RIVER MINE”, sentiments Harold might agree with but the powers that be want the perpetrator caught. A documentary filmmaker, Lillian Cartwright, has permission to float the river with Clint McCaine (a wealthy man and manager of the mine project) and Bart Trueblood (president of Save the Smith dedicated to stopping the mine). Lillian figures the fur will fly with the two opponents trapped together on the river, giving her good filming opportunity.

Sunriver Books & Music June 2017 Newsletter Sunriverbooks.com 541-593-2525 As the summer weather is here, one of our customers, a retired policeman, re- quested we alert people to the danger of leaving dogs in parked cars. Please do not. They can die very rapidly. In minutes at an outside temperature of 78 de- grees the temperature inside a parked car reaches lethal levels. If you see a dog in a parked car in Sunriver, please call the Sunriver Police Department 541-593 -1014. While we are alerting dog owners to local dangers, the wonderful local veteri- narian Dr. Wendy Merideth of Sunriver Veterinary Clinic 541-636-9945 has alerted us to the danger of mushrooms. You should be aware that every year dogs ingest poisonous mushrooms, sometimes fatally, always requiring prompt medical attention. In the Deschutes National Forest you also need to be cautious as there are leg hold traps that can grievously injure a pet, or a person for that matter. In Sun- river, there are gopher traps to be avoided on the golf courses that can cause injury to children or pets. Dogs in Sunriver must also either be on a leash or under firm voice control, this keeps them from unhappy interactions with resident’s cats and other small animals. Sunriver is a great place for dogs, they love it here! We welcome them with treats at Sunriver Books & Music. Dogs enjoy swimming in the river, walking on the trails, relaxing on decks, and having a fine doggy time on their Sunriver Vacation. There are hikes to go on, squirrels to watch, some of the restaurants such as the Sunriver Brewing Company and the Village Bar and Grill welcome dogs on their decks.

  • The Cowboy and the Detective: the Case of Craig Johnson Antoine Dechêne
The Cowboy and the Detective: The Case of Craig Johnson Antoine Dechêne Abstract. This essay focuses on Craig Johnson’s charismatic protagonist Walt Longmire, the county sheriff of Absaroka, Wyoming. A cowboy- detective par excellence, Longmire embodies the interrelationship between the Western and detective fiction while offering a good example of “glocal literature”—that is, a form of literature that is both global and local. Craig Johnson is one of the most prominent North American crime writers in recent years. His fiction revolves around a marginal and charismatic detective: Walt Longmire, the county sheriff of Absaroka, Wyoming. The fictional county is inspired by the novelist’s everyday life, himself a rancher at Ucross in the same state of Wyoming. This West, delin- eated by vast plains spreading at the foot of the Big Horn Mountains, is, for Longmire, a space of investigation and meditation, a landscape whose omnipresence and personification make it a full- fledged character in the novels. Accordingly, this essay focuses on the figures of the cowboy and the detective, both emblematic of the genres they embody: the Western and crime fiction. The essay also deals with the representations and the different impacts of this vast natural space on the detective’s work (the reading of tracks, traces, and clues; the time- consuming drives; the importance of the weather, etc.). The apparent immensity of the American West also encourages introspection and tints the narrative with spiritual, almost mystical overtones. Longmire often has prophetic dreams and visions stimulated by his long- standing friendship with his Cheyenne comrade, Henry Standing Bear.
