Sunriver Books & Music July 2018 Newsletter Sunriverbooks.com 541-593-2525 Craig Johnson Depth of Winter Walt Longmire September 9th, sign up to attend Saturday July 7 at 5:00 PM Keith McCafferty returns for A Death in Eden. His Montana mysteries feature Sherriff Martha Ettinger, Sean Stranahan, and Harold Little Feather among a cast of other characters. They are all great to spend time with, but Harold Little Feather is a particularly appealing character and he has the lead in this edge of your seat story. Harold recent- ly left his post as one of Martha’s deputies to accept a position as a detec- tive with the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation. He just came off of an undercover investigation involving some reprehensible men poaching bear to sell their gallbladders. It was not an assignment he enjoyed, the men were dangerous and Harold does not take kindly to hurting animals. So his new assignment is odd but welcome. Montana’s Smith River is gorgeous and remote; it is a 7 year wait to receive a permit to float the river. Lately someone has been putting up scarecrows above the river, with signs saying “NOT ON MY WATCH” and “N0 SMITH RIVER MINE”, sentiments Harold might agree with but the powers that be want the perpetrator caught. A documentary filmmaker, Lillian Cartwright, has permission to float the river with Clint McCaine (a wealthy man and manager of the mine project) and Bart Trueblood (president of Save the Smith dedicated to stopping the mine). Lillian figures the fur will fly with the two opponents trapped together on the river, giving her good filming opportunity. -
SR Books May 2014.Pdf
Sunriver Books & Music May 2014 Newsletter Sunriverbooks.com 541-593-2525 Saturday May 10th at 5:00 PM William Sullivan gives a slide show titled Oregon for the Curious showing us some of the stranger places in our beautiful state; places to hike, places to visit, and places used as settings for the stories in his new book, an innovative collection of short stories titled The Oregon Variations. Sullivan was inspired by Bach’s Goldberg Varia- tions and the loneliness reflected in Kafka’s short stories. In his collection he writes a fugue using the structure of Bach’s music to craft a work of fic- tion. The stories are varied, well written and interesting. My favorite is the Vortex about a lonely little bookstore battling Amazon, the evil empire, in an incredibly unusual way. Aria for Tenderfeet captures perfectly the feel- ing of ranchland and the melancholy of one generation yearning to pass on the land as it was passed to them. It is a lovely story about a grandfather and two grandsons beginning to understand. To Say Nothing Of The Dog has two hit men on the trail of their target on the snowy Crater Lake trail. This daring 31 story collection is set in every county in Oregon. Two of the stories use crossword puzzles. Pictures of Crater Lake need no words, they tell their own stories. It is all highly entertaining and unique. Sullivan, like the ancient Greeks, understands that melancholy and humor can live side by side. While his stories succeed in capturing that sense of loneliness that inspired him, they also use a deft touch to keep the reader entertained. -
Articles from 2016
Preview Shelf Articles for 2016 December 1, 2016 Discovering the Wild Heritage of the Nineteenth State By Dianne Combs It has been a wonderful year of celebration for the state of Indiana. Two hundred years of statehood! We have learned many things about our political and historical heritage, but I believe that Indiana still has many secrets that need to be learned. Here at the library we have some beautiful books that will help you explore the natural history of our great state. “The Natural Heritage of Indiana,” edited by Marion T. Jackson, takes us on a lively jaunt through the terrain of our great state. To my delight, the very first picture in Part One is of the “Honeycomb Rock” at Pine Hills Nature Preserve in the southwestern part of Montgomery County. Glaciation and its effects on our landscape are explained in detail, which helps me to understand all the rock formations I come across while exploring some of our nationally renowned state parks. Throughout this section, written by Henry Gray, we are taken on several tours of Indiana. He describes the terrain as if he were driving along highways and illustrates his discussion with appropriate topographical maps. Our soil and water, wetlands and caves — all these give our state its unique stamp on the map of our nation. Beautiful photographs of the flora and fauna of Indiana fill the pages of this coffee table book. I could spend hours just turning its pages, learning about the native plants and animals with which we share our land. We have recently acquired two copies of “A Place Called Turkey Run — A Celebration of Indiana’s Second State Park in Photographs and Words,” by Daniel P. -

Navajo Mysteries and Culture
NAVAJO MYSTERIES AND CULTURE THE FOUR CORNERS WITH TONY HILLERMAN [email protected] Abstract Read the Jim Chee/Joe Leaphorn mystery novels of Tony Hillerman, augmented by the recent additions by his daughter Anne, and study the Indian myths and cultural concepts they embody. The land is sacred to the Navajo, as reflected in their religion, arts, and weaving. While enjoying Mr. Hillerman’s descriptions of southwestern landscapes and its people, review Navajo mythology with its beautiful descriptions of the cycle of life, the formation of the world, and the special reverence for land. Consider the relation of the Navajo to the Hopi and Pueblo peoples of the Anasazi migration. The course will provide an appreciation of Navajo concepts including “hozho,” going in beauty and harmony with nature, and its reversal of witchcraft (“skinwalkers”). It will delve into the basis of tribal sovereignty and existing treaties to better understand the politics of cultural preservation. The course will also consider current Navajo issues, including the control and exploitation of mineral and energy resources and their impact on the Navajo Nation. Mr. Hillerman generally weaves current issues of importance to Indian Country into his work. This is a two-semester course in which the student should expect to read about 7 first class mystery novels each semester. Course Operation While reading and enjoying the Tony Hillerman mysteries, we will discuss the examples of Navajo religion, spirituality and culture portrayed in the stories. As the opportunity arises, we’ll consider the treaties, U.S. policies, social experiments, and laws that have shaped our relations with the Navajo Nation (as well as those with all 562 federally recognized U.S. -

Trinity College Digital Repository, https://digitalrepository.trincoll.edu/theses/350 The telling of the Navajo creation myth begins with the appearance of the “The People” from the three underworlds and into this, the “Glittering World”, through a magic reed. Unlike human beings, “The People” were animals and masked spirits. Then came the appearance of the first man, Altse Hastiin, from the Dark World created in the east through the meeting of the white and black clouds. “The young man who walks in the darkness, may it be made as offering to him, may it be made as offering to him.” Then, Alse Asdzaa, the first woman arrives from the Dark World, made by the meeting of the yellow and blue clouds in the west. The people from the three underworlds met in the first house and began the arranging of the world. For the Navajo, this myth marks the beginning of time as they understand it and explains how the world is perceived and even lays the groundwork for ritual. -

While they were children, their mother, Ruth, demonstrated weaving and attracted a constant flow of tourists at the Two Grey Hills Trading Post. Indeed, Ruth Teller’s rugs were so prized that tourists often purchased them right off the loom. Needless to say, as children, Lynda and Barbara learned weaving through observation. Weaving is a legacy in the Teller family. For over five generations, grandmothers, mother, sisters, aunts, and cousins have produced award-winning rugs and are featured in numerous publications. Lynda and her family are known for weaving rugs in the traditional Two Grey Hills pattern which identified primarily by a double- diamond layout, intricate geometric design using natural colored, hand-carded and hand-spun wool. Lynda’s maternal grandmother, Susie Tom and her paternal grandmother, Nellie Peshlakai Teller made sure their daughters and granddaughters learned the art of weaving. They emphasized many practices, such as respecting the loom; preparing one’s own wool via shearing, carding and spinning; the production and proper care of weaving tools; and paying attention to design elements, always emphasizing the importance of intricate patterns and color combinations.
