    THE KPD AND THE NSDAP: A STTJDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLITICAL EXTREMES IN WEIMAR GERMANY, 1923-1933 BY DAVIS WILLIAM DAYCOCK A thesis submitted for the degree of Ph.D. The London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London 1980 1 ABSTRACT The German Communist Party's response to the rise of the Nazis was conditioned by its complicated political environment which included the influence of Soviet foreign policy requirements, the party's Marxist-Leninist outlook, its organizational structure and the democratic society of Weimar. Relying on the Communist press and theoretical journals, documentary collections drawn from several German archives, as well as interview material, and Nazi, Communist opposition and Social Democratic sources, this study traces the development of the KPD's tactical orientation towards the Nazis for the period 1923-1933. In so doing it complements the existing literature both by its extension of the chronological scope of enquiry and by its attention to the tactical requirements of the relationship as viewed from the perspective of the KPD. Sylvester Michelfelder Country of origin: New Washington, Ohio, USA Date of birth: 27.10.1889 Date of death: 30.12.1951 Period of mandate: 1947-1951 Short biography: From German descent, Michelfelder was not an academic theologian. It was his skill as pastor, organizer and team leader that caused Ralph Long, director of the National Lutheran Council in New York to send him as commissioner of the American Section of the Lutheran World Convention to the rising World Council of Churches. On 18 July 1945, he arrived with his wife in Geneva after having crossed the ocean on the Miraposa and travelled by rail from Cherbourg which gave him ample evidence of emergency needs in Europe. Operations in Germany in the early post-war period was the first task of Michelfelder with led into close ties of confidence and networks of cooperation with German church leaders such as Hanns Lilje and Hans Meiser. His major accomplishment became then the careful preparation of the first Assembly of the LWF which represented international interaction between sisters and brothers of the same faith. Michelfelder had clear ideas for an Assembly with a three-part program: confessing the truth in a confused world, concentrated on the Word, the church and the sacraments, a section on evangelism, stewardship, foreign missions and aid operation and a final section on facing the problems in a troubled world. His abilities as an administrator became apparent particularly in two connections: when he prepared and led the First Assembly and when he led in the formation of a functional structure for the whole LWF, the Geneva Secretariat and the national committees.

    CHAPTER 10 Resistance to the Reformation in 16th-Century Finland Kaarlo Arffman 10.1 Introduction The Protestant Reformation is an interesting era for analyzing the nature of religion, in which the reformers wanted to reshape the Christian religion and lifestyle. Research into the resistance to the Reformation enables us to reach a better understanding of Christianity in Finland in the Late Middle Ages. In the Reformation era Finland was the eastern part of the Kingdom of Sweden. Originally, there was only one bishop for the whole of Finland, in Turku (in Swedish Åbo). However, in the years 1555–1564 and 1568–1578 another bishop headed the eastern parishes from Vyborg (Viipuri). Lutheran ideas had reached Denmark and Sweden already by the beginning of the 1520s and received endorsement, especially in the big cities. The kings of Denmark and Sweden supported Lutheran preachers but the theological opponents of Lutheranism were also able to express their opinions.1 After internal conflict and the victory of the convinced Lutheran, Duke Christian in Denmark, in 1536, the situation changed. The debate was over. The new king, Christian III, took the Church under his direction and began to shape it into a Lutheran one. Resistance became risky. In Sweden King Gustav Vasa followed the example of the Danish king.2 In Norway and Finland the influence of Lutheranism was weaker and slower in developing than in Denmark and Sweden.     Global Mission Updates Winter/Spring 2019 Dear Friends of ELCA Global Mission, “Who knows? Perhaps you have come to royal dignity for just such a time as this” (Esther 4:14b). Esther’s life changed quickly. This young Israelite girl found herself living in the king’s palace, along with other teenagers competing to become queen. Esther was chosen. What a change, from the streets of Susa to the royal palace! Life was indeed good for Esther, but all the comfort and luxury could come to an end. Her adoptive father, Mordecai, challenged her to plead the case of the Jews before the king. Esther faced a difficult situation. No one could come before the king without an audience, doing so would result in death. Mordecai challenged Esther: You were given this gift — use it! Like Esther, we all have been gifted by God. These gifts are not our own possessions but tools for building up the body of Christ and engaging in God’s mission to restore community. Our world cries with deep sighs, lifting up the eyes to the hills, wondering, “where will my help come?” (Psalm 121:1). We have been gifted with the Spirit for just such a time as this, doing God’s work with our hands. This edition of Global Mission Updates provides a panoramic view of how our gifts and talents touch the lives of peoples from around the globe. I hope that, through these stories, God will touch your hearts and fill them with the burning fire of the Spirit, so that you too will become part of this great missional journey.

    1 The ‘long reformation’ in Nordic historical research Report to be discussed at the 28th Congress of Nordic Historians, Joensuu 14-17 August 2014 2 Preface This report is written by members of a working group called Nordic Reformation History Working Group, that was established as a result of a round table session on the reformation at the Congress of Nordic Historians in Tromsø in Norway in August 2011. The purpose of the report is to form the basis of discussions at a session on “The ‘long reformation’ in Nordic historical research” at the Congress of Nordic Historians in Joensuu in Finland in August 2014. Because of its preliminary character the report must not be circulated or cited. After the congress in Joensuu the authors intend to rework and expand the report into an anthology, so that it can be published by an international press as a contribution from the Nordic Reformation History Working Group to the preparations for the celebration in 2017 of the 500 years jubilee of the beginning of the reformation. To Remember the Reformation According to Collins Concise Dictionary, “Commemoration” means, “to honour or keep alive the memory of.”1 It is weaker than the wording “Reformation Jubilee,” which generated 393 000 hits on Google, compared with merely 262 000 for “Reformation Commemoration.”2 According to the same dictionary, the meaning of “Jubilee” is “a time or season for rejoicing.” For a Swedish Catholic, there is, however, little to rejoice about when considering the consequences of the reformation; instead, the memories that naturally come to mind are those of several centuries of persecution, repression and marginalization.3 The rejoicing of a jubilee is, hence, completely alien for a Swedish Catholic when looking back to the reformation, but it is also difficult to acquiesce to the weaker meaning of “honoring” the reformation, as implied by the notion of commemoration. The reformation in Sweden was not especially honorable. The second part of the meaning of commemoration “to keep alive the memory of” is more suitable, but then in a form of a tragic remembering; we grieve over what we have lost. In the village where I live, for example, there is a beautiful white stone church from the 12th century. It was thus Catholic for five hundred years before the reformation, but has since then been a Lutheran Church. Instead, I have to travel by car for half an hour to attend mass in the Catholic Church, which is a former protestant Free Church chapel from the 1960s.4 All the priests are Polish, and so is, I guess, half the parish.
