The Japanese new religion Ômoto was founded in 1892 by DEGUTI Nao. In 1922 and 1923 three Bahá’í-missionaries visited the co-founder DEGUTI Onisaburô. He was very impressed by their use of the international artificial language Esperanto. After that Ômoto accepts the idea that Esperanto is the best international language, much easier to learn than other languages. From 1923 many omotoists learn Esperanto. During the period 1925-1932 Ômoto had a mission in Paris. A few mis- sionaries published the paper Oomoto Internacia and travelled around Euro- pe. -

A short story of Ueshiba Morihei And his philosophy of life ‘Aikido’ By Kim Mortensen This short essay is supposed to give the practitioner of Aikido an idea of the person behind Aikido and how Aikido was created both physically and mentally. If you have any questions or comments after reading this essay, contact me on following mail address: [email protected] ----- ,1752'8&7,21 This essay is about a man called Ueshiba Morihei, nicknamed O-sensei, and his philosophy of life; Aikido. When I first heard about Ueshiba Morihei I heard stories, which were so amazing that I thought they belonged in another age and not in this century. They were stories about a man who was able to disappear suddenly when he was attacked; something which one would expect to find in fairytales and old myths. I began to wonder who this man was and why he has been elevated into some kind of a God; there had to be an ordinary story behind the man Ueshiba Morihei. The first part of this essay will describe Ueshiba Morihei’s Biography. The second half will concern his philosophy of life, and what makes it so unique. In the biography part I will call Ueshiba Morihei by name whereas in the part on his philosophy and religion I will call him O-sensei as it was his religion and philosophy which gave him that nickname. I choose to do this because the biography part concerns a man and his achievements through his life. The second part concerns Ueshiba Morihei as a philosopher and a teacher and therefore it is more suitable to call him O-sensei in this part. -

Both the Intemet and new religions are relatively new to Japanese society. -

4. Shinnyo-en Monika Schrimpf Japanese scholars of the Study of Religions usually categorise Shinnyo en as a "new new religion" (shin shinshükyö, Wftfft*~), i.e. a new religion prospering since the 1970s and reflecting the trends of that time (Shimazono 2001 a: 1-20). However, in its self-representation the group describes itself as a "Buddhist community" (Bukkyö kyödan, {.l~~[:j'!) 1 in the tradition of esoteric Buddhism. In fact, the group combines elements of Shingon Buddhist thought and ritual with the scriptural basis of the sutra Daihatsu nehangyö :kilßti!E~m½ (Skt. Mahä-parinirväna sütra), with specific "spiritual faculties" (reinö, fl"/jg ) assigned to the family of the founders and transmitted to "spiritual mediums" (reinösha, fl"/jg*), and a unique ritual practice called sesshin shugyö ~,C.A1~ff. By creating this doctrinal and ritual system Shinnyo-en claims to have established a third strand of esoteric Buddhism: the so-called "Shinnyo esotericism" (shinnyomitsu, ~P•W). lt is characterised as being rooted in the Shingon Buddhist esotericism of Kükai (774-835) (tömitsu, *W) and Tendai Buddhist esotericism of Saichö (767-822) (taimitsu, irW), but enriching these by the mysterious divine powers of the Daihatsu nehangyö (Budda saigo no oshie 2001: 21 ). In contrast to models of cultural and political development imported from the West during the Meiji Restoration and extended during the Showa and Taisho eras, and the strong orientation toward centralized vertical hierarchy that in Japanese culture and governance of that period, Minakata offers an understanding in terms of dispersed non-linear networks. As botanist, folklorist, and environmental activist, Minakata refused engagement with academic and governmental institutions, conducting his life and work in the remote Kii Peninsuala. In doing so, he engaged with a variety of significant horizontal networks: elite aristocratic networks, demotic press networks, ascent pan-Asian political networks, domestic folkloric and literary networks, and international intellectual networks. -
