SAFETY GOGGLES SHOULD BE PURCHASED PRIOR TO YOUR FIRST LAB EXPERIMENT. LABORATORY SAFETY RULES Any chemical laboratory is potentially hazardous. The following safety rules are designed to help reduce your risk of injury. 1. No one may work in the laboratory in the absence of an instructor. 2. Responsible behavior is essential. The dangers of spilled acids and other chemicals and broken glassware created by Thought less actions are too great to be tolerated. Reckless and careless students can be asked to leave the lab. 3. Plan ahead. An understanding of experimental procedures will minimize careless mistakes. 4. When in doubt, don’t be afraid to ask the instructor for clarification about any of the procedures. 5. Food and drink are not allowed in the laboratory. Poisoning is the obvious danger. Hands should be thoroughly washed before leaving the lab. Smoking is not allowed in any building on campus. 6. All persons during all lab classes and activities must wear proper eye protection as required.(i). 7. Safety goggles that meet the ANSI Standards.(ii) must be worn as they offer the highest level of eye protection against chemical splash hazards. 8. Because of the danger of exposure to chemical splashes and spills, open-toed shoes should not be worn in the laboratory. Any individual whose clothing exposes the torso and/or does not adequately protect the body should wear a properly fitting long-sleeved lab coat. Lab coats may be purchased at the campus bookstore. 9. Confine long hair and loose clothing while in the laboratory as they may catch fire or cause chemical spills. 10. Be very cautious when using chemicals near an open flame. Some chemicals, clothing and hair are flammable and may ignite. Do NOT leave an open flame unattended for any reason. 11. Use extreme care when handling any chemicals and be aware of the specific hazards. Read the labels on all the reagent bottles and waste containers. Mixing the wrong chemicals together could be dangerous. Material Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals are located in the chemistry stockrooms. 12. Note the location of the safety shower, eyewash station and fire extinguisher. In case of a chemical spill on your body or clothing, wash the affected area with large quantities of water. Don’t worry about ruining your clothing, it can be replaced. 13. Know the location of all the exits in the laboratory. 14. Report all injuries and accidents to your instructor. In all but trivial accidents, an accident report is to be made out. Report forms are available in the Stockrooms (3-228, 8-332 and 4-1/445). 15. Know the correct waste collection procedures. Spent matches and ALL glass (pipettes, melting tubes, TLC spotters, broken glassware) should be placed in the correctly labeled container in the lab – never in the trash bins. 16. Keep your work area neat at all times. Clean up spills and broken glass immediately. Clutter will not only slow your work but it leads to accidents. 17. Never pipet by mouth. Always use a pipet bulb. 18. Review Fire Emergency and Earthquake procedures with your instructor. (see over). 19. If you think you may be pregnant or that you may become pregnant while taking a lab class, you should consult with your health provider or physician. i. NOTE: A copy of these safety procedures (for your records) is in your lab manual Approved by Cal Poly E H & S Department 8/12/2004 EMERGENCY PROCEDURES I. FIRE AND OTHER EMERGENCIES: 1. REMAIN CALM. 2. Alert others and activate the building fire alarm. When safe to do so, DIAL 911. Identify the fire location and give any other information you have about the source of the fire and any other hazards in the area. 3. Use extinguishers for MINOR fires only. If the fire cannot be controlled, close all doors to confine the fire if it is safe to do so and leave the area. 4. When you hear the EMERGENCY ALARM evacuate the building immediately. RE-ENTER ONLY WHEN TOLD TO DO SO BY A POLICE OFFICER OR DISASTER OFFICIAL. II. EARTHQUAKE: DURING AN EARTHQUAKE 1. KEEP CALM. Don't run or panic. If you take the proper precautions you will decrease your chances of being injured. 2. STAY WHERE YOU ARE. Most injuries occur as people are entering or leaving buildings. 3. IF THE EARTHQUAKE STRIKES WHEN YOU ARE INDOORS, TAKE COVER UNDER A DESK, HEAVY TABLE, BENCH, OR AGAINST INSIDE WALLS OR DOORWAYS. Stay away from glass windows and overhead light fixtures. If you are in a laboratory, stay away from hazardous materials. 4. DO NOT USE MATCHES OR OTHER OPEN FLAMES EITHER DURING OR AFTER THE TREMOR. TURN OFF ALL BUNSEN BURNERS AND OTHER IGNITION SOURCES. 5. IF THE EARTHQUAKE CATCHES YOU OUTSIDE, MOVE AWAY FROM BUILDINGS AND UTILITY WIRES. Move to an open area. Stay there until the shaking stops. AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE 1. CHECK FOR INJURIES. Do not attempt to move persons who may be seriously injured unless they are in danger of further injury. 2. IF YOU DETECT A GAS LEAK, CALL 9-1-1. Also notify the building disaster coordinator so that an evacuation may be conducted. 3. EVACUATION OF BUILDINGS IS NOT AUTOMATIC. Evacuation will depend on surrounding circumstances i.e. gas leak, fire or severe structural damage. Building evacuations should be conducted at the direction of public safety personnel or the building disaster coordinator. 4. IF BUILDINGS ARE EVACUATED, STAY OUT OF THEM UNTIL DIRECTED TO RE- ENTER BY EITHER A POLICE OFFICER OR DISASTER OFFICIAL. 5. IF EVACUATION OF BUILDINGS IS NECESSARY, BE PREPARED TO ASSIST HANDICAPPED PERSONS. 6. BUILDING 4 EVACUATION SITE IS BETWEEN THE LARGE GREENHOUSE AND THE NORTHWEST SIDE OF THE BUILDING ON THE GRASSY AREA. 7. BUILDINGS 3 & 8 EVACUATION SITE IS THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE QUAD. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS.
