Through the years, my family’s involvement within the Jewish community, and at The Associated, consisted of various philanthropic leadership positions – my father, Dr. George Abeshouse, chaired the Doctors’ campaign division on many occasions, my mother, Sara Offit Abeshouse, chaired Top Gifts and other campaign leadership positions within the Women’s Division, and my uncle, Morris W. Offit, chaired numerous positions both nationally and internationally. These were just some of the examples that became an integral part of my life lessons. I learned that it is every Jewish person’s obligation to assist those less fortunate and to always try one’s best to prioritize this value in one’s life.

It provides a frank account of the University’s struggle against these difficulties and its efforts to prove the value of university education to society and the economy. This volume describes and analyses not only academic developments and changes in the structure and finances of the University, but the opinions and social and political lives of the staff and their students as well. It also examines the controversies of the 1970s and 1980s over such issues as feminism, free speech, ethical investment, academic freedom and the quest for efficient management. The author draws on official records, staff and student newspapers, and personal interviews with people who experienced the University in very 1973–90 different ways. With its wide range of academic interests and large student population, the University of Manchester was the biggest unitary university in the country, and its history illustrates the problems faced by almost all British universities.     Jewish Fraternal Organizations of the early 20th Century Hal Bookbinder ([email protected]) Our ancestors created a wide variety of organizations to provide mutual support, from religious to social, educational, insurance and burial services. “Landsmanshaften” brought together individuals who came from the same town in Europe. Sometimes established as lodges of a fraternal organization, like the Independent Order, Sons of Jacob. These organizations paralleled existing American ones incorporating the pomp and secrecy of Masonry, Pythians and Odd Fellows. These organizations provided a safety net through life and health insurance and offered social opportunities to lead and to be recognized. Hundreds of thousands of our immigrant ancestors participated during the heyday of these organizations in the first half of the 20th century. Most were male-focused. Women participated through auxiliaries and occasionally fully independent orders. Understanding these organizations provides important insights into the lives of our immigrant ancestors.     The United Nations Fraternity: Tau Delta Phi Calvin Lee ’15 RE 221, “Topics in Maine’s Jewish History,” January 2013 Since the 1830s, the Greek letter system has been a dominating presence on college campuses in the United States. For young men and women, these student organizations provided housing, lasting friendships, social status, and membership into a network of powerful and influential people. However, despite the various social benefits and advantages offered by fraternities, many of these exclusive brotherhoods perpetuated both racial and religious discrimination on college campuses. Fueled by waves of immigration, both World Wars, and a rapid growth in those seeking higher education, fraternities quickly became a barrier that separated young men and women based on their racial, ethnic, or religious identities. Between the years 1881 and 1924, there was an explosion of over two and a half million Jewish immigrants from various Central and Eastern European countries. These immigrants were driven from their native lands by threats of persecution as well as the scarcity of economic opportunity and mobility. Such economic difficulties were the result of the industrialization and urbanization of societies in the 19th century. Millions who struggled to even feed their families traveled across the Atlantic to what they hoped would be the “land of opportunity.” Many Central and Eastern European Jews also sought refuge in the United States from political upheaval, including the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 and the formation of the Third Communist International two years later. In response to the surge of immigration into the U.S., the government imposed the National Origins Act of 1924, a quota limiting the number of immigrants that could be admitted into the country annually.
