A tono con la celebración por estos días de una nueva emisión del festival Ciudad Metal, evento que tiene por sede la capital villaclareña, dedico hoy mi sección a informar acerca de algunos discos salidos en meses recientes de este popular género musical. Quiero comenzar hablando de un CD que me ha encantado en particular. Tras la ruptura con sus compañeros de Audioslave, que optaron por rehacer a Rage Against The Machine, el notable vocalista Chris Cornell ha iniciado una carrera como solista con la presentación de Carry On, un álbum diría yo bastante intimista y personal. La pieza principal del CD es You know my name, un corte incluido en la banda sonora de la última película de James Bond, Casino Royale. Sin duda, este es uno de los buenos temas del fonograma, donde también aparecen otros muy sobresalientes como Arms around your love, Ghosts, Billie Jean o Finally forever. No creo ser reiterativo si aseguro que Chris se muestra en todas sus potencialidades como vocalista y corrobora que él es uno de los mejores cantantes de rock surgidos de los 90 hacia acá. Siempre he pensado que lo mejor de todo lo grabado por Smashing Pumpkins ha sido el doble disco Mellon collie and the infinite sadness, de 1995. Otras propuestas del ensamble, en verdad me han interesado muy poco. Por ello, cuando me llegó su más reciente trabajo, Zeitgeist (Reprise-Warner), imaginé que no me aportaría nada su audición y así, lo eché a un lado. Cierta tarde, una amiga que estaba de visita en casa vio el disco y me pidió que se lo pusiera. Lo hice con pocas ganas pero tras escuchar el primer corte de la grabación, me motivé a prestarle atención pues de algún modo Billy Corgan y su tropa se renovaban con la nueva proposición. Zeitgeist no se asemeja en lo más mínimo a Mellon Collie and the infinite sadness, pero contiene como un rasgo que lo distingue temas con excelentes líneas melódicas, revestidas con una energía roquera a raudales y que lo lleva a uno a tararear más de una pieza de las compiladas en el disco. Ello me sucede con la potente Doomsday clock, portada de la grabación, o con la variada 7 shades of black. Otros cortes altamente recomendables son el experimental United States, Bring The Light, muy melodioso en su diseño, y Tarantula, con destaque guitarrero. En fin, que Corgan y sus colegas dan la impresión de que le están inyectando un segundo aire a Smashing Pumpkins. Ozzy Osbourne es una figura por la que siento un aprecio particular como icono del rock de mis años adolescentes y juveniles. No le perdono que se haya involucrado en una que otra tontería, como el reality show que hace poco protagonizó para una gran cadena televisiva. Aunque él ya no es el mismo de la década de los 70, cuando literalmente nos voló la cabeza a todos los que por entonces éramos seguidores de las tendencias más fuertes dentro del hard rock y específicamente de Black Sabbath, padres del metal que ha venido después e influencia reconocida por no pocas agrupaciones de la actualidad, el hombre reitera aquello de que más sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo. Prueba de ello la tenemos en su reciente producción discográfica, el álbum titulado Black rain, salido al mercado en un esfuerzo mancomunado entre los sellos Epic y Sony BMG. Después de seis años sin editar ningún compacto con material nuevo, Ozzy retorna por sus fueros en este fonograma, en el que de nuevo tiene como mano derecha a ese tremendo guitarrista que es Zakk Wylde, quien una vez más se desenvuelve como lo que es: un maestro del instrumento de las seis cuerdas. Aunque Black rain no llega a los niveles cualitativos de grabaciones previas de Osbourne, como por ejemplo Blizzard of oz, Bark at the moon, Ozzmosis o No more tears (para mi gusto, lo mejor que el vocalista ha realizado de los 90 hacia acá), en la reciente propuesta hallamos composiciones con la potencia que ha tipificado el quehacer del mítico cantante. GOODISON: Tell me about your life before you came to New York. TATE: I was born in Dayton, Ohio, and we moved to DC when I was about twelve, so that would have been about 1971, 1972, and that was about the same time I really got interested in music, collecting music, really interested in collecting jazz and rock, and reading music criticism too. It kinda all happened at the same time. I had a subscription to Rolling Stone. I was really into Miles Davis. He was like my god in the 1970s. Miles, George Clinton, Sun Ra, and locally we had a serious kind of band scene going on.
