5th Sunday of Easter — May 10, 2020 3 PARISH NEWS

A Time for Thanks After lockdowns began in March, our parish experi- enced a severe drop in donations due to our inability to take up the Sunday collection at Mass. At that time, I reached out to all of you, and the response has been truly inspiring. So many of you adapted to the changes by donating online, in the mail, or by other creative means. Many of you adjusted the timing of your planned giving or made an additional sacrificial gift to meet the parish’s immediate needs. Even if you were only able to support St. Philip’s with your prayers, your generosity has kept our parish going through this time. COLLECTIONS REPORT While it is too early to say that we are “out of the woods,” your quick $25,097.67 response has enabled our parish to overcome the budget shortfall from Home Missions (Wk 2) $325.00 March and to prepare for the needs of the coming days. so Seminarian Fund $546.50 grateful to you all.

The Road to Our New Home Paving continues at our church construction site!

Paving is moving forward on our construction site; we have con- tinued progress on our parking lot, completed the first part of the driveway leading up to the future church, and paved part of Wal- singham Drive.

Walsingham Drive: A Road in Honor of Our Lady Our parish was permitted to pick the name of the road on the southern boundary of our property, which is being built as our campus develops. A road to a church should have an appropriate name, and what could be more appropriate than Our Lady, who is indeed the “road” leading to her Son? Her “yes” to God permit- ted Christ to enter our world.

We chose the name “Walsingham Drive,” in honor of the great of Our Lady of Walsingham in England, an ancient devotion which is experiencing a renewal in our day.

The shrine at Walsingham was founded in the 11th century after Our Lady appeared to a noblewoman named Richeldis, instructing her to build a replica of the Holy House of Nazareth. Walsingham was a famous pilgrimage site until its destruction during the Protestant Reformation. In the 1890s, parts of the site were re- stored and Walsingham again became a place of devotion to Our Lady. As we celebrate this month dedicated to the Blessed Moth- er, we give her thanks for being the “road” to Jesus. Our Lady of Walsingham, lead us to your Son! 5th Sunday of Easter — May 10, 2020 5

8 St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

his year, today, Mother’s Day happens to fall on May 10 – on which date, in 1908, my own mother was born; so it is for me a special day of love and great thanksgiving. Her middle name was Mary.

Mother’s Day, as it is known and observed in America, was inaugurated early in the 20th cen- tury. But its antecedents in the Catholic tradition lie centuries earlier. To this day, in other parts of T th the English-speaking world, Mothering Sunday is celebrated on the 4 Sunday of Lent, perhaps because the old Mass Lectionary for that day included Galatians 4:25 – “... Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother”. St Paul’s allusion can be traced as far back as the prophecy of , where one famous passage refers to Old Jerusalem as a Mother who comforts and nourishes her children. And we remember that Mary is venerated not only as the Mother of God but also as the Mother of the Church – a title formally confirmed by Paul VI.

Long ago, people returned to their mother church on Laetare Sunday -- one's "mother church" being either the church where one was baptized, the local parish church, or the nearest cathedral (the latter being the mother church of all the parish churches in a diocese). Anyone who did this was commonly said to have gone "a-mothering". In later times, Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother church, usually with their own mothers and other family members. It was often the only time that entire families could gather together, since on other days they were prevented from doing so by conflicting working hours.

Children and young people who were "in service" (as household servants) were given a day off on that day so they could visit their families and return to their "mother" church. The children often picked wild- flowers along the way, either to place in the church or to give to their mothers.

So today we honor and reverence motherhood, and we pray for healing for all who have betrayed it by abortion or cruelty to children.

This month, May, is Mary’s month. We cannot forget that brief, incredibly poignant moment of Jesus’ last words to his Mother as he hangs on the cross. Even in the midst of the pain, Jesus considers the needs of others: he gives his Moth- er to the beloved – and in so doing, she becomes a mother to him and to all Jesus’ followers.

We who claim to be followers of Jesus ought to take seriously this great gift. Being Jesus’ Mother makes Mary the Mother of God, and as children of the same heavenly Father, she is our mother too. Like the beloved disciple, we should take her into our own homes – not because she needs us to care for her, but because she longs to care for us. Who could be closer to Jesus than his own Mother? Who better to ask to pray for us than the one closest to his heart? In the beautiful words of a 19th century hymn by H. W. Baker:

Shall we not love thee, Mother dear, whom Jesus loves so well, and to his glory, year by year thy praise and honor tell?

So may it be for us this Mother’s Day.
