Dr. Devendra Singh, Scientist ‘D’, Cryptogamic unit conducted one field tour to Kohima district, Nagaland (Khonoma, Dzokou Valley, Sikahake, Jelakia, Dzulardi and Tohiba) from 17th to 27th March 2017 and collected specimens of 166 field numbers. In connection with the project, “Pharmacognosy of Indian Cycads”, Dr. A.B.D. Selvam, Scientist ‘D’ prepared 15 photo plates with regard to habit, leaf anatomy, Leaf surface features and Pollen morphology studied under Light and SEM microscopes of three species of Cycads. For the ongoing projects such as Algal Flora of Jharkhand, Studies on Wild Mushrooms of Sikkim, Studies on the Macrofungi of AJC Bose Indian Botanical Garden, Wood rotting fungi of Rajmahal hills. Revision of the family Metzgeriaceae in India and Liverworts and Hornworts Flora of Darjeeling District, West Bengal, scientists of Cryptogamic unit identified the specimens and made illustrations. Sri Manoj Emanuel Hembrom, Botanist submitted Project Report on Fungi part of the project, “EIA studies on Rabindra Sarobar, Kolkata”. Public service rendered Dr. A.B.D. Selvam pharmacognostically studied and authenticated four crude drug samples received from M/s Imami Ltd., Kolkata, as detailed below: Azadirachta indica (Meliaceae) – Seeds Curcuma longa (Zingiberaceae) – Rhizome Curcuma zedoaria (Zingiberaceae) – Rhizome Piper nigrum (Piperaceae) – Seeds Dr. -

North Bengal accounts for 3,086 sq km (26 %) of the 11,876 sq km area of classified forests in the state, and for nearly 5,000 sq km (40 %) of all land under tree cover. Khumani is a Village (26.84o N, 88.60o E) in Gorubathan Block in Darjeeling District of West Bengal State, India. The survey work was done in December, 2014 by visiting the Khumani Forest Village (established in 1949) of upper Kumai and the primary data were gathered through field survey and direct contact with common people and authorized centers of the region. Surveys on the demography, agriculture, livestock management, water management, education, culture, health, waste management, disaster management, transport, biodiversity, human animal conflict were done in this area. Topographic map of the area was prepared by using the database of National Atlas and Thematic Mapping Organization (NATMO), Kolkata office. In every phase of the survey work, pictorial documentation was done. In spite of being positioned in a diverse and sensitive ecological zone, the village is not adequately managed. -

Ph. D Scholar Department of History Sikkim University, Tadong, 6th Mile, Gangtok, Prerna Tamang East-Sikkim Darjeeling, one of the tiniest districts of West Bengal, consists of the majority Nepali community. The Nepalis are the unassimilated minority group in West Bengal. The people have always looked upon themselves different from Bengal and Bengalis physically, culturally, traditionally and linguistically. Ethnic identity systems generally incorporate political aspirations of a group and are effective in mobilizing members for political goals. The ethnic demand of the Nepali speaking population of the Darjeeling region for a separate administrative set up goes back to 1917.1t was a little before 1917, that the Hillmen's Association had been formed consisting of the three ethnic groups, the Lepchas, Bhutias and Nepalis. The Gorkhaland Agitation was the ultimate cause of ABSTRACT feeling of relative deprivation, language threat to identity of the Nepalis. THE STUDY AREA 2.1 GENERALFEATURES 2.1.1 Location and besic informations ofthe area Darjeeling is a hilly district situated at the northernmost end of the Indian state of West Bengal.
