ABSTRACT In addition to a literature review, this Report integrates results from a "Workshop on Accelerated Learning" (June, 2008) and a "Working Meeting on Accelerated Proficiency and Facilitated Retention" (October, 2009. The Workshops brought together leading academic, private sector, and DoD specialists in areas of training and expertise studies. The goal of accelerated learning calls out an important practical tension. On the one hand is the notion that we must accelerate learning; that is, increase the rate at which highly proficient performance is achieved. On the other hand, there is a significant amount of evidence that developing expertise requires up to 10 years of experience, including practice at tough tasks (Hoffman, 1998). This suggests that it is not possible to accelerate the achievement of high proficiency. A prime goal of the DoD Accelerated Learning Technology Focus Team is to identify critical research challenges that are currently underfunded or not funded, and generate a notional roadmap for science and technology advancement. 15. Abstract: In the three decades since Ausubel put forward his assimilation theory of congnitive learning, many changes have occurred in the field of educational psychology and the emerging fields of cognitive science and artificial intelligence. This paper is not a review of these developments, but rather a statement on the current status of Ausubel's theory as seen from the perspective of our research group. We see his theory largely unchanged in terms of basic concepts and principles, although new epistemological ideas, recent ideas from cognitive science, and new metacognitive tools permit new perspectives on the power and value of Ausubel's theory. Yet, this chapter emphasizes that often what appears to be the most obvious is what we, in fact, don't clearly see or understand except on a most general level. In recent years, personality and dispositional characteristics of learners have been largely ignored in education. Nevertheless, if you ask anyone inside— or outside—of education if they think attitude, motivation, temperament, and character are something they try to foster in their teaching, the answer will be a resounding yes. But this largely automatic answer typically resonates with a hollow ring. In an article in the American Psychological Association Monitor, Susan Moses observes that Despite a decade of earnest educational restructuring across the country, all the na­ tional statistics still paint the same picture of students' lackluster academic perfor­ mance.
