CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S REPORT GENERAL UPDATE The Trust has continued to progress its longstanding work to reduce length of stay and support alternatives to admission. I am pleased to say that, following the recent surge of A&E referrals, we now are now back on our previous low figure of out of area placements and generally managing demand locally. I am grateful to all staff who have worked so hard to manage the recent increased demand. In January we hope to be starting the innovative partnership model between the London Ambulance Service and mental health support whereby a mental health nurse will go out to patients who call assistance reporting they are in crisis. This model was trialled in South London and significantly reduced the number of people who were conveyed to an Emergency Department; providing better care for patients. Finally our Primrose Project, which is aimed at keeping people who have long term mental illness well for longer and reducing admissions, is just starting and we look forward to monitoring its impact. ORGANISATIONAL UPDATE CQC Update The CQC has now concluded their Well-led inspection and the feedback received has been really positive overall. The CQC have confirmed that they had seen lots of progress in many areas since their last inspection in 2017, and it was great to hear about how welcoming and caring our teams are in C&I. A huge thank you to everyone for your preparation and hard work during our CQC inspection. The Trust received the CQC‟s initial feedback letter dated 15 November2019 and we now await the draft report which we anticipate will be received in the new year. Freedom to Speak Up Guardian C&I have done a review of the Freedom to Speak Up Guardian arrangements with a view to strengthening them. We are pleased to advise that we have signed a contract with 'Guardian Service', an independent service who has been working with a number of NHS Trusts including UCLH, Barts Health and SLAM. These new service arrangements will commence from the 2 January 2020. Thanks goes to Adwoa Siaw-Larbi for maintaining the Guardian role within C&I for a period of time. MEDIA PROFILE Inquests The Guardian and the Camden New Journal covered the narrative verdict following the inquest into the death of teenage refugee Osman Ahmednur. The Trust was criticised for failing to refer him for an emergency assessment and making the wrong clinical judgement. The Trust issued a statement setting out how we have changed our services since the death to ensure cases are escalated appropriately. TRUST EVENTS Mental Health Matters Around 50 people held a lively discussion on how mental health services should change to meet the needs of people from BME backgrounds, at our latest Mental Health Matters event on Wednesday 30 October. Our guest speaker, the campaigner and social commentator Patrick Vernon OBE, spoke about how important it was for health service providers to recognise, and address, the reasons why there is a greater proportion of people from BME backgrounds with mental health issues. Yarn Bombing A colourful and fascinating exhibition of knitted and crocheted artwork has opened at St Pancras Hospital with a successful launch night on Friday 25 October. Called “The Gently Explosive Art of Yarn Bombing and Other Acts of Stitchery”, the pieces showcase designs by 25 local artists. Yarn Bombing, sometimes referred to as „Guerilla Knitting‟, can be used to get a social or political message across or simply add colour to a bland environment. Posthumous Star of the Month On Tuesday 12 November, the Trust awarded the latest Star of the Month tribute to Silvana Casanova, who worked as an Occupational Therapist on Malachite before she sadly passed away suddenly in August. Silvana‟s partner, colleagues, friends, service users and Trust Chair, Leisha Fullick, came together for a small ceremony on the ward to celebrate Silvana‟s award following a touching nomination submitted by Occupational Therapist, Ruth Crowley, Silvana‟s friend and colleague. Royal College of Psychiatry Award C&I Psychiatry Trainee, Dr Golnar Aref-Adib, has won a prestigious award from the Royal College of Psychiatry for her work as a clinician and academic to empower patients and colleagues. Dr Aref-Adib has been awarded the „Higher Psychiatric Trainee of the Year‟, with judges recognising her research work focusing on digital interventions for people with severe mental illness. The judges were also impressed with Dr Aref-Adib drive to communicate effectively with the general public and those she teaches. Met Police, Transport Police and Magistrates for training People working in the criminal justice system are being given training through C&I to help them understand the problems and issues faced by veterans. The scheme, run by the Veterans‟ Mental Health Transition, Intervention and Liaison Service, (TILS), offers knowledge and insight into military culture and jargon, and problems in transitioning to civilian life. It also explores the offending patterns of veterans, the role of trauma in offending behaviours and common mental health issues experienced by veterans. STAFF APPOINTMENTS AND CHANGES Dr Carlos Gonzalez was appointed as a Consultant Psychiatrist in the North Islington Recovery Team.
